SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF SEAWIFS CHLOROPHYLL IN THE SOUTH TROPICAL PACIFIC OCEAN Gayana
Dupouy,C; Neveux,J; Le Bouteiller,A.
The South West Tropical Pacific (SWTP) is generally considered as an N-limiting oligotrophic area with parts characterized by permanent deep thermocline and nutricline as the Melanesian Archipelago. However, ocean color imagery shows in this region a strong seasonal chlorophyll cycle, with large blooms which have for long been attributed to nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria as Trichodesmium. SeaWiFS surface chlorophyll analysis of the area between 5°S-25°S, 150°E-170°W has been conducted from 1997 to 2004. A strong seasonal and interannual variability is described, which relates well with the sea-truth measured chlorophyll concentrations. An empirical orthogonal function analysis helped in determining principal explicative factors of this variability, and in...

Rain-derived particles and CDOM distribution along the East Coast of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Dupouy, Cecile; Wattelez, Guillaume; Lefevre, Jerome; Juillot, Farid; Andreoli, Remi; Lille, Didier; Murakami, Hiroshi; Roettgers, Rudiger; Frouin, Robert.
Shortly after strong rains or tropical storms, chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla), turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the lagoon of New Caledonia may be tripled. This effect is visible as far as 50 km offshore. The Eastern Coast of New Caledonia is more impacted than the Western Coast because of its geomorphological structure. Higher frequency and intensity of the rains, and the dominance of highly erosive lateritic formations resulted from deep weathering of ultramafic rocks. At the deeper parts of the lagoon (> 20 m), increases of Chla, turbidity, and CDOM absorption can be detected by satellite imagery with their plumes extending off shore as a result of wind-driven circulation in the lagoon. Such -increases agree with the...

Marine resources of the economic zone of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Grandperrin, René; Bouniot, Emmanuel; Henin, Christian; Lafoy, Yves; De Forges, Bertrand; Van De Beuque, Sabrina; Virly, Sabrina.
The ZoNeCo programme, devoted to the evaluation of living and non-living marine resources within the Economic Zone of New Caledonia, illustrates clearly the Marine Benthic Habitats concept. It exhibits the study of the physical environment and disciplines such as geology and physical oceanography. The results acquired in these fields are used as bases to study the presence and the distribution of living species within a given habitat. The knowledge of all the parameters relative to each discipline is a useful guide for the evaluation and the sustainable management of living and nonliving resources.

Seasonal Pattern of the Biogeochemical Properties of Mangrove Sediments Receiving Shrimp Farm Effluents (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Marchand, Cyril; Molnar, N.; Deborde, Jonathan; Della Patrona, Luc; Meziane, Tarik.
Coastal tropical shrimp farming may impact the adjacent ecosystems through the release of large quantities of effluents rich in nutrients. In New Caledonia, mangroves are considered as a natural biofilter to reduce impacts on the surrounding World Heritage listed lagoon. Our main objective was to understand the influence of effluent discharge on the biogeochemistry of mangrove sediments. A monitoring of the physico-chemical parameters of mangrove sediments was carried out during a whole year, including active and non active periods of the farm. The parameters studied were: i) benthic primary production (Chl-a concentrations), ii) physico-chemical parameters of sediments (redox potential, pH, salinity, TOC, TN, TS, δ13C and δ15N), iii) concentrations of...

Analyse des résultats d'une ferme d'élevage de crevettes sur 20 années : SODACAL 1984-2004. "Elasticité" de la capacité de production d'un écosystème bassin crevetticole ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc.
SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic...

Spatial and temporal extension of eutrophication associated with shrimp farm wastewater discharges in the New Caledonia lagoon ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Courties, Claude; El Helwe, Yasmin; Herbland, Alain; Lemonnier, Hugues.
Shrimp farming in New Caledonia typically uses a flow-through system with water exchange rates as a tool to maintain optimum hydrological and biological parameters for the crop. Moreover, the effluent shows hydrobiological characteristics (minerals, phytoplankton biomass and organic matter) significantly higher than that of the receiving environment. Separate surveys were carried out in a bay (CH Bay) with a medium-size intensive farm (30 ha) (PO) and in a mangrove-lined creek (TE Creek) near a larger semi-intensive farm (133 ha) (SO). Net loads of nitrogen exported from the semi-intensive farm and the intensive farm amounted to 0.68 and 1.36 kg ha(-1) day(-1), respectively. At CH Bay, discharge effects were spatially limited and clearly restricted to...

Impact of Contrasted Weather Conditions on CDOM Absorption/Fluorescence and Biogeochemistry in the Eastern Lagoon of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Dupouy, Cécile; Röttgers, Rüdiger; Tedetti, Marc; Frouin, Robert; Lantoine, François; Rodier, Martine; Martias, Chloe; Goutx, Madeleine.
New Caledonia (Southwest Pacific), like all tropical Pacific Island countries, is impacted by weather events, climate change, and local anthropogenic forcing. Strong erosion of particles and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from ultramafic rocks, associated with trace metals dissemination (i.e., nickel, manganese and cobalt), potentially affects lagoon waters and coral reefs surrounding the main island. The CALIOPE (CALedonian Inherent Optical PropErties) cruises were performed along the Eastern Lagoon of New Caledonia (ELNC) (400 km, 13 transects from Bay to open ocean, 51 stations) during contrasted meteorological conditions: a dry period (October 2011), a windy situation (March 2014), and a strong rainy event (March 2016). Seasonal Shifts in Diazotrophs Players: Patterns Observed Over a Two-Year Time Series in the New Caledonian Lagoon (Western Tropical South Pacific Ocean) ArchiMer
Saulia, Emmrick; Benavides, Mar; Henke, Britt; Turk-kubo, Kendra; Cooperguard, Haley; Grosso, Olivier; Desnues, Anne; Rodier, Martine; Dupouy, Cécile; Riemann, Lasse; Bonnet, Sophie.
Coastal and open ocean regions of the Western Tropical South Pacific ocean have been identified as a hotspot of N2 fixation. However, the environmental factors driving the temporal variability of abundance, composition, and activity of diazotrophs are still poorly understood, especially during the winter season. To address this, we quantified N2 fixation rates and the abundance of seven diazotroph phylotypes (UCYN-A1 symbiosis, UCYN-B, UCYN-C, Trichodesmium, Het-1, Het-2, and Het-3) on a monthly basis during two full years (2012 to 2014) at four stations along a coast to open ocean transect in the New Caledonian lagoon. The total nifH gene concentration (sum of all nifH gene copies) clearly decreased from the barrier reef to the shore. Apart from UCYN-B,...

A white spot disease-like syndrome in the Pacific blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) as a form of bacterial shell disease ArchiMer
Goarant, Cyrille; Brizard, Raphael; Marteau, Anne-laure.
In May 1997, some white lesions evoking the white spot syndrome disease were observed in Litopenaeus stylirostris broodstock in New Caledonia. The occurrence of these lesions was neither associated with mortality, nor with histological evidence of white spot syndrome baculovirus (WSBV), The evidence suggests that these lesions result from a form of bacterial disease and are associated with an increased bacterial flora on the outer surface of the cuticle, as well as an increased incidence throughout the molt cycle. A microscopic observation of these lesions allows them to be differentiated from WSBV-associated lesions.

A Statistical Algorithm for Estimating Chlorophyll Concentration in the New Caledonian Lagoon ArchiMer
Wattelez, Guillaume; Dupouy, Cecile; Mangeas, Morgan; Lefevre, Jerome; Touraivane,; Frouin, Robert.
Spatial and temporal dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and water turbidity can provide crucial information about the function, health and vulnerability of lagoon ecosystems (coral reefs, sea grasses, etc.). A statistical algorithm is proposed to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration ([chl-a]) in optically complex waters of the New Caledonian lagoon from MODIS-derived remote-sensing reflectance (R-rs). The algorithm is developed via supervised learning on match-ups gathered from 2002 to 2010. The best performance is obtained by combining two models, selected according to the ratio of R-rs in spectral bands centered on 488 and 555 nm: a log-linear model for low [chl-a] (AFLC) and a support vector machine (SVM) model or a classic model (OC3) for high [chl-a]....

Social Structure, Habitat Use and Injuries of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) Reveal Isolated, Coastal, and Threatened Communities in the South Pacific ArchiMer
Bonneville, Claire Daisy; Derville, Solène; Luksenburg, Jolanda A.; Oremus, Marc; Garrigue, Claire.
Understanding population structure and habitat use of poorly known cetacean species is a first step toward scientifically informed management decisions. In the southern range of New Caledonia (South Pacific), a long-term dataset of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) encounters primarily during winter seasons 1997 to 2019 (473 group observations) was used to assess social structure, habitat use and potential threats. A total of 338 individuals were photographically identified, forming three distinct communities in the south-west lagoon, the south lagoon and the Isle of Pines. Mark-recapture histories revealed that the three communities were weakly connected and might be considered as independent management units. Suitable habitats were...

Estimation des stocks de poisson des lagons de Nouvelle-Calédonie : 1 – Structure et stocks des communautés des poissons de récifs. ArchiMer
Letourneur, Y; Kulbicki, M; Labrosse, Pierre.
Lagoon fish in New Caledonia are mainly caught by artisanal fisheries and subsistence fishing. Reef fish are the major component of this catch. The present study aimed at estimating these reef fish standing stocks and at finding the main factors influencing the distribution of these fish. Sampling of 904 stations was stratified according to three zones (north, east and west) and three reef types (barrier, intermediate and fringing). Fish communities exhibited strong heterogeneity in their distribution, showing higher biomass (maximum of 447 g.m(-2)) and total standing stock (43 000 tonnes) in the north zone than in the east and west zones. Similarly, observed patterns were dependent on reef types: higher biomass and total standing stock being observed on...

Traitement des crevettes contre le noircissement .Mise au point d'une ligne de traitement ArchiMer
Chantreau, Patrick.
Once fished, the shrimps must be cooled quickly in water cooled in order to slow down all chemical and bacteriological activities. In addition, in order to avoid blackening (mélanose) shrimps (céphalothorax and legs) it is necessary to treat those with an antioxydant product. The product currently used to inhibit this enzymatic change is the soda niétabisuifite (Na-> S7 O5), until now, after being fished. the shrimps were directly soaked in a cooled water tank, containing the pesticide. The solution of treatment was progressively prepared needs. The concentration of this one was approximately 2 to 3% of métabisulfite, that is to say 6 to 9 G of SO2 per liter for a starting product containing 320 G of SO2 approximately. Phytoplankton dynamics in the southern New Caledonian lagoon during a southeast trade winds event ArchiMer
Neveux, Jacques; Lefebvre, Jean-pierre; Le Gendre, Romain; Dupouy, Cecile; Gallois, Francis; Courties, Claude; Gerard, Philippe; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Ouillon, Sylvain.
During the Echolag cruise (13 February-8 March 2007), the effect of 16-30 knot trade winds on abundance, community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton was investigated in the southern part of the New Caledonian coral reefs and surrounding oceanic waters. In this area, the coral reefs form two horn-like structures (hereinafter referred to as 'horn reefs'), oriented south-east, and separated by a relatively deep valley. Three repeated samplings at one week intervals of a 32 station array showed that trade winds induce surface water cooling and significant enrichment of mid- and bottom waters above the reef shelf. This enrichment appeared as the result of a general rise of the oceanic thermocline and nitracline due to the combination of trade winds and...

Evolution Géodynamique du domaine Ouest-offshore de la Nouvelle-Calédonie et de ses extensions vers la Nouvelle-Zélande ArchiMer
Collot, Julien.
The southwest Pacific results from the fragmentation of Gondwanaland since the Cretaceous time. The purpose of the current PhD work is to deepen our understanding of the history of the New Caledonia and Fairway basins, located west of New Caledonia, in order to better constrain the geodynamical evolution of the SW Pacific from Cretaceous to Oligocene. The analysis of new geophysical data has led to distinguish 3 main phases of this fragmentation: 1 Mid Cretaceous formation of the Fairway-Aotea Basin in a continental intra-arc position. The formation of this basin reflects the initial stage of continental fragmentation of the Eastern Gondwana margin. The causes of this fragmentation are to be searched for in a major change of the dynamics of the...

A step toward the definition of ecological indicators of the impact of fishing on the fish assemblage of the Abore reef reserve (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Amand, Marion; Pelletier, Dominique; Ferrari, Jocelyne; Kulbicki, Michel.
Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. The study was based on data from the Abore reef Reserve in New Caledonia. Two sets of methods: 1-inferential linear models (ANOVA, GLM): 2- Partial Least Squares (PLS) methods of regression, were used to test the effects of this MPA. PLS enabled us to test simultaneously within a model, density, species richness, biomass and mean...
