Two new subspecies of Tropaeolum hookerianum Barn. are described. Apart from T. hookerianum subsp. austropurpureum presented here, only one other Andean-Pacific temperate Tropaeolum, T. azureum Bert. ex Colla, has blue to purple flowers. The second taxon, T. hookerianum subsp. pilosum, is distinguished by pilose pedicels, a feature unique among Andean-Pacific temperate species. Both novelties are Chilean endemics restricted to the IV Region (Coquimbo), as also is the nominate subspecies. All three are allopatric, and considered together extend the species' range to the north, to the south and to the east. Their characters and interrelationships pose implications for Tropaeolum evolution which are likely to be of interest to exponents of phylogenetics... |

The native ˋōhiˋa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) has cultural, biological and ecological significance to Hawai`i, but it is seriously threatened by a disease commonly referred to as rapid ˋōhiˋa death (ROD). Preliminary investigations showed that a Ceratocystis species similar to C. fimbriata s.lat. was the cause of the disease. In this study, we used a combination of the phylogenetic, morphological and biological species concepts, as well as pathogenicity tests and microsatellite analyses, to characterise isolates collected from diseased ˋōhiˋa trees across Hawai`i Island. Two distinct lineages, representing new species of Ceratocystis, were evident based on multigene phylogenetic analyses. These are described here as C. lukuohia and C. huliohia.... |

In 1913, Edward Meyrick removed several genera from his compound family Yponomeutidae and united them in a new group, "Glyphipterygidae". After 1954, this name has been used generally, often in the emended spelling "Glyphipterigidae". The family name was not new but used by Meyrick in an entirely different sense. Former authors (Zeller, 1839; Stainton, 1854; Frey, 1856, etc.) indicated with the name "Glyphipterygidae" only one of the two main groups of Meyrick's enlarged concept, viz., the "Glyphipteryginae" or the "Glyphipterygidae sensu stricto". In spite of its existence during quite a long time, Meyrick's family " Glyphiteryginae" proved to be an unsatisfactory combination. In later years, especially recently, its highly heterogeneous character became... |

The identity of the subgenera Isocrassina Chavan, 1950, Laevastarte Hinsch, 1952, and Ashtarotha Dall, 1903, of the genus Astarte Sowerby, 1816 in the family Astartidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) is discussed. Isocrassina has been widely used for Pliocene species in the North Sea Basin. Here it is demonstrated, that this is based on a redefinition of this subgenus, which excludes its type-species. As the North Sea species differ considerably from the type-species of Isocrassina in aspects of ornament and details of the hinge, it is concluded that they should be placed in the genus Laevastarte. A slightly modified definition of Isocrassina and Laevastarte is given and both are raised to genus level. The morphological basis for Ashtarotha is quite weak and it is... |

The present paper contains descriptions of one genus of the Hilarographini (Tortricidae), three species, one subspecies, with one forma, of the Choreutidae, and six species with one forma, of the Glyphipterigidae, all groups formerly having been assigned to the so-called Glyphipterigidae auctorum. These taxa will be illustrated in the forthcoming revisionary volume of the complex "family" in the series "Microlepidoptera Palaearctica", now in preparation. The new descriptions are published here, in order not to delay their appearance unduly. The whereabouts of the type specimens are indicated with abbreviations, of which a list will be found at the last page of this paper. Two new species of the oregoniid crab genus Hyas are described from the Lower Pliocene of northern Japan, H. chippubetsuensis sp. nov. from the Chippubetsu Formation exposed along the Tadoshi River (Fukagawa City, central Hokkaido) and H. tentokujiensis sp. nov. from the Tentokuji Formation at Daisen City (central part of Akita Prefecture). These two new taxa both have a densely tuberculate carapace and strongly vaulted dorsal regions. Another extinct congener in the northeast Pacific region, Hyas tsuchidai Imaizumi, 1952, from the Upper Miocene Wakkanai Formation of northern Hokkaido, Japan. The earliest fossil record of the genus Hyas is from the ‘lower Badenian’ (Langhian, early Middle Miocene) of Austria. If Hyas originated in the Paratethys prior to... |

A new species, Rubus ramachandrae, from Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, India is described and illustrated. It is closely similar to R. stipulosus and R. fuscifolius but differs by densely bristly or hirsute branches; narrowly ovate or oblong-lanceolate leaves with caudate-acuminate apex and adaxially hirsutulous vesture; abaxially grey tomentose intermixed with hirsutulous hairs; larger size of stipules and bracts with distinct margin and vesture; smaller size of floral structure. The distinct foliar as well as floral morphology of R. ramachandrae differs from all previously described species of Rubus. Differences in key morphological characters of R. ramachandrae, R. stipulosus and R. fuscifolius are also tabulated. In addition, pollen... |

Two new genera of Talpidae, Theratiskos gen. nov. and Suleimania gen. nov., and five new species, T. mechteldae sp. nov., T. rutgeri sp. nov., S. ruemkae sp. nov., Geotrypus haramiensis sp. nov. and G. kesekoeyensis sp. nov., are described from the Lower Miocene of Anatolia. The literature on the very diverse genus Geotrypus is reviewed. The aberrant genus Suleimania is placed in a separate subfamily, Suleimaninae subfam. nov. Theratiskos is considered an uropsiline talpid. The taxonomy and classification of the Uropsilinae is discussed. On the basis of the morphology of the humerus the genera Asthenoscaptor and Mygatalpa are included in the Uropsilinae, showing that the diversity of this subfamily during the Early Miocene was much larger than previously... |
