<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-to), where to = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). At 25 °C and 30 promille S, average embryonic development time and generation time are 4 and 9 d... |

The oyster culture, flourishing along the Belgian coast at the beginning of the century, perished entirely in the course of two World Wars. In 1956, it was taken on again intensively in the Scour Basin of Ostend. If we consider the obtained results with the affination of Flat and Portuguese oyster, this 86 ha closed basin, is of an exceptional productivity. Essays on the understanding of the origin of calcified oysters, done from 1960 until 1966, turned out to be very promising and an integral oyster culture from the larvae up to the adult oyster could be observed. In any case the last few years, eventhough compared to before a normal emission of larvae of <i>Ostrea edulis</i>, there has not been a fixation of the origin. Regular samples of... |

During ecological investigations on the optimum culturing conditions of ciliates, we studied the influence of a number of abiotic factors on the reproductive potential of the hypotrichous ciliate <i>Euplotes vannus</i> Muller, such as the nature and the quantity of food, the temperature and the salinity. The experiments were run in petri dishes of 5 cm diameter containing 5 ml of food suspension, and were always started with conjugants. The microphagous <i>Euplotes vannus</i> thrives on a variety of food media. Excellent results were observed on homogenized bakers yeast, i.e. 10.000-20.000 animals in 5 ml of food suspension. In good culturing conditions the stationary phase was reached in 7 days, which implicates a mean rate of... |

The sluice-dock at Ostend is an artificial lagoon (1.5 m deep and with an area of 86 ha) connected to the harbour of Ostend and the North Sea by sluices (vannes). At low tides, during spring tide, the whole dock can be emptied, washing out the planktonic biomass. As an oyster culture exists in this biotope, applied and fundamental research is done. Planktonic larvae of oyster predators can be eliminated from the biotope by washing out the whole water volume during their bloom and replacing it by new sea-water. The oyster pest <i>Crepidula fornicata</i> (introduced with oyster spatfall from the Netherlands and reproducing heavily in the sluice-dock, otherwise not occurring along the Belgian coast) is controlled in this way (before: 15,746... |

Growth on submerged substrates (fouling or "Aufwuchs") has already been the object of numerous studies especially with regard to its economic implications. The scarcity of investigations on the influence of pollution on development and evolution of the fouling-biocoenosis is surprising. As far as we know the smaller fauna and flora in this particular situation have never been studied quantitatively. Therefore, in 1963, 1964 and 1965, a number of experiments were carried out in the harbour of Ostend (Belgium) on submerged substrates of different nature, in order to study the following less known aspects of fouling: a) the successive stages in the development of fouling, from bacteria to macro-organisms. b) the influence of several factors on its... |

In this work we studied some ecological factors and the floral composition of phytoplankton (micro plankton) during the 1953-1954 period. We measured successively: the temperature, the pH, the alkaline, the chlorine, the dissolved oxygen, the concentration of phosphates and nitrates. The water of the Ostend port passes the scale a-mesohaline to polyhaline. The sampling of the phytoplankton has been worked out one time or several times in a month. The Bacillariophyceae play an important role, the Dinophyceae are relatively rare, as the Chryosophyceae, and the Chlorophyceae are meeting during the whole year, with the exception of January, February and April, in little quantities, except for November. Dominant species are: <i>Coscinodiscus continues,... |

Nitrogen nutrients being, at least at some periods of the year, a limiting factor of primary production in the Sluice-Dock at Ostend, the production or consumption of ammonium and nitrate by the benthic bacterial communities plays an important role in the dynamics of the ecosystem. A methodology is developed to evaluate the fluxes of carbon and nitrogen associated with the microbiological activity and the physical mass transfer in the sediments. It is based on the analysis of vertical concentration profiles of pertinent substances in the sediment, completed with some direct <i>in situ</i> measurements of microbiological activity. This methodology is applied to denitrification, total heterotrophic activity, and nutrification in the two types... |
