Background: Calibrachoa Cerv. (ex La Llave & Lexarza) is a genus of the Solanaceae family (La Llave and Lexarza, 1825). This genus has a high ornamental and economic value due to its intrinsic variability and multiplicity of flower colours. In Argentina there are eight native species, and one of them is Calibrachoa caesia. The genetic diversity among 35 accessions of C. caesia, from five departments in the province of Misiones, was analyzed using ISSR markers. Results: Thirteen ISSR primers yielded a reproducible banding pattern, with 701 amplified loci and 98% of polymorphism. The ISSR primers 5CT, 5CA, 5GA, 5GACA, 3CAC, 3TG and 3TC generated 100% polymorphic patterns. The Rp values ranged from 23.20 to 10.29 for 5GACA and 3AG primers,... |

The genus Scoparia is native from Argentina. The diversity of colours and shape of their flowers bestows this genus a very interesting ornamental potential. The purpose of the present study is to explore the Scoparia species germplasm by means of in vitro polyploidization in order to improve their ornamental qualities. Accessions of S. montevidiensis var. montevidiensis, S. montevidiensis var. glandulifera, S. nudicaulis, S. hasleriana and S. dulcis were collected and maintained under greenhouse conditions. The Murashige-Skoog medium, supplemented with 0.25 mg/L BAP was used for the nodal segments multiplication of the five Scoparia species. Except for S. hasleriana, the multiplication rate of the other species ranged between 10 and 12 shoots per explant.... |

Breeding programs seek to reduce the time spent assessing characteristics more times than necessary. However, this reduction should in no way undermine the representativeness and reliability of the information. Thus, an important success factor in breeding programs is the knowledge of the ideal number of assessments needed to evaluate commercially important characteristics in each species or population. In this context, this study aimed to determine the repeatability coefficient of eight biometric traits in four populations of ornamental pepper, seeking to increase the efficiency of evaluation and selection processes. There was no significant influence of the calculation method used over the estimate of the repeatability coefficient. The results indicated... |

The post-production quality of ornamental peppers can be shorted due to exposure to ethylene. The concentration of this phytohormone at 10 µL/L induces leaf, fruit and flowers abscission, ripening of climacteric fruits, organ senescence, seed germination and seedling growth. We evaluated the correlation between pepper morphoagronomic traits and resistance to ethylene on ornamental peppers. Two genotypes, one resistant (UFPB 132), a susceptible (UFPB 134), and two hybrids (DR x PN) were utilized (76 x PN) to assess the susceptibility or resistance to ethylene. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replications. First, 19 morphoagronomic characteristics were analyzed when the plants had 30% of fruits at the ripe stage. At this stage,... |

ABSTRACT Ecology of orchid species was studied, surveyed and characterized on Serra das Cabeças, a subunit of Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (PESB), Araponga-MG, Brazil. Data were obtained through monthly visits on all trails of the area, from 2004 to 2014 covering different types of vegetation, collecting some species and identifying them. We observed characteristics such as type of vegetation, habitat where each species was found, intensity of luminosity, altitude and position of plants in relation to watercourses. Obtained results allowed to conclude: 80 species were identified, of which 45 had not been reported for PESB; five for the state of Minas Gerais, and four for Brazilian flora. Concerning habitat, 57.50% are epiphytic, 1.25%... |

The influence of gibberellic acid (GA3) and water regime was evaluated in the flowering induction and quality of two orchid hybrids belonging to the genera Cattleya (C.) and Brassocattleya (Bc.). The experiment was carried out in the Biotechnology and Orchid Culture Sector of Shunji Nishimura Technology Foundation, Pompéia, São Paulo State, Brazil. Five GA3 concentrations (0, 125, 250, 500 and 1,000 mg L-1) were tested through four consecutive leaf applications in adult plants that had already flowered at least once, besides two water conditions (one and four irrigations per week). Applications were performed in October and November for Bc. Marcella Koss and in January and February for C. Irene Holguin. Flowering could not be induced in the latter by... |

ABSTRACT 1-MCP has been effectively used as an antagonist of ethylene deleterious actions in flowers and ornamental plants. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of 1-MCP (0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g m-3) in maintaining post-production quality of exogenous ethylene sensitive ornamental pepper. Two commercial varieties were evaluated: Pimenta Colorida and Pimentão Ornamental, both Capsicum annuum. The pre-treatment with 1-MCP, regardless of the applied concentration, was effective in blocking the ethylene action reducing the leaves abscission, flowers and fruits of both genotypes by 100%. Plants pretreated with 1-MCP had postproduction life increased by eight and nine days for Pimenta Colorida and Pimentão Ornamental, respectively. The 1-MCP application... |

ABSTRACT: Pansy (Viola cornuta) is a facultative long-day plant that flowers from October until March in Turkey. During the winter months, low light levels can limit plant growth and development. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) can provide supplemental lighting in greenhouses which produce same light intensity with less energy than conventional incandescent lighting. Light emitting diode technologies have enabled affordable and efficient light systems to be installed in greenhouses and plastic tunnels in the field. In this experiment we evaluated the effects of supplemental red-orange LED lightening on the growth and development of pansy cv. Blue Blotch grown in plastic tunnels. The energy, which LEDs are to consume, was provided through a solar panel system... |

ABSTRACT Within the genetic variability of the Capsicum genus there are plants with ornamental potential, but awry height required by the market. Paclobutrazol (PBZ), gibberellin retardant and growth inhibitor, is normally used as alternative to reduce plant height. The objective was to evaluate the PBZ (0, 25, 50 and 75 mg L-1) effect on plant height of eight pepper genotypes. Seven accessions [BGH 1032, BGH 1039, BGH 7073 (C. annuum), BGH 4285, BGH 4199, BGH 4355 and BGH 6371 (C. chinense)] of the germplasm bank from Universidade Federal de Viçosa and one access [MG 302 (C. annuum)] from the germplasm bank of the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais were evaluated. The PBZ application was ineffective in altering plant architecture of BGH... |

Ornamental plants have been proposed for growing in heavy metal (HM) contaminated soils, and also for phytoremediation. We evaluated (1) biomass production and (2) HM accumulation in Pelargonium hortorum. Plants were grown for 16 weeks on HM (cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc) enriched soils. Treatments were i) control, non-enriched soil, ii) medium concentration treatment, and iii) high concentration treatment. Four destructive harvests were carried out, and roots, stems, leaves, and flowers were analyzed each time. Concentrations of HM were determined using ICP. Significant reductions in biomass production were observed in HM-enriched soils compared with the control. Different indexes confirmed that P. hortorum was affected by HM. Heavy... |

Market channel alternatives that include garden centers, landscapers, mass merchandisers, and rewholesalers have contributed to the growth of ornamental crops sales in the United States. The impact of growers’ business characteristics on shares of sales to these channels by firm size was estimated using the two-limit Tobit model. Important explanatory variables were regions of the United States, sales of plant groups, kinds of contract sales, and channel diversity. There were important differences in behavior by grower size. Overall, the results indicate a stronger than expected role for the rewholesaler channel as a preferred channel for ornamental plant sales. |
