As of 1985, Ifremer set up a selection programme for resistance to the protozoan Bonamia ostreae in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis). Two selection lines, L85 and L89, from the third and second generation, respectively, were produced with 17 and 21 different families. The experimental design also included a mixed line (L85 x L89) of seven families and a control line of five families from Quiberon broodstock maintained without selection pressure. |

The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is the species endemic to European coasts, both Atlantic and Mediterranean. It has been exploited since Roman times, but its aquaculture production decreased from around 20000 tons in the 1950's to 1500 tons today because of two successive diseases due to the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. Since 1985, Ifremer has been undertaking a breeding program to produce families of oysters tolerant to Bonamia. In this context, a further step would be to identify QTLs for resistance to this parasite. Therefore, as a first step a genetic map is now being built. The establishment of a genetic linkage map will provide a foundation for the mapping of QTLs, with the ultimate objective to implement... |

Bonamiosis due to the parasite Bonamia ostreae is a disease affecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. B. ostreae is a protozoan, affiliated to the order of haplosporidia and to the cercozoan phylum. This parasite is mainly intracellular, infecting haemocytes, cells notably involved in oyster defence mechanisms. Suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH) was carried out in order to identify oyster genes differentially expressed during an infection of haemocytes with B. ostreae. Forward and reverse banks allowed obtaining 1104 and 1344 clones respectively, among which 391 and 480 clones showed a differential expression between both tested conditions (haemocytes alone versus haemocytes in contact with parasites). ESTs of interest including genes involved in... |

The present study identifies quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in response to an experimental infection with the parasite responsible for bonamiosis, Bonamia ostreae, in two segregating families of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. We first constructed a genetic-linkage map for each studied family and improved the existing genetic-linkage map for the European flat oyster with a set of SNP markers. This latter map now combines the best accuracy and the best estimate of the genome coverage available for an oyster species. Secondly, by comparing the QTLs detected in this study with those previously published for O. edulis in similar experimental conditions, we identified several potential QTLs that were identical between the different families, and also... |

Throughout the years 1974-1975, the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis Linné) disease has gradually spread to most of the French oyster culture centres and caused very important losses in farmed oysters and natural deposits. This note analyses the current evolution of the epizooty; to do so, we differentiate three types of flat oyster culture centres: Centres affected in the past by the epizooty and where the traditional flat oyster culture has become uncertain. It has been replaced by the culture of Crassostrea gigas and by the finishing, for 7 to 8 months, of flat oysters aged 3 or 4 years old which remained of good quality. Centres recently touched by the epizooty where the culture of flat oysters (18 months and 2 years old) from unharmed spat is still possible... |

A new process of collecting fIat oyster spat in deep water, based on the use of suspended mussel shell, was perfected between 1978 and 1982. The technique has contributed the continued breeding of the species in Quiberon bay (Brittany ) , in spite of the presence of Bonamia ostreae. In order to quantify the number of spat recruited by this technique each year, a method of estimation was tested during the summer 1985. This paper describes the sampling strategy and the results. |

From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. Regardless of the type of farming, Marteilia refringens infection was very quick and may have been related to climatic bay water... |

In contrast with the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas and the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, Ostrea edulis seed production in the hatchery has been reported to be erratic, with sudden and unexplained larval and post-metamorphosis mortalities. Fecundity and initial larval quality have been related to broodstock conditioning, but effects on larval development and metamorphosis remain poorly understood. In addition, molluscan larval mortalities have been often associated with bacterial contamination and flow-through techniques may help to overcome this problem. Both aspects have been considered in the present work. O. edulis broodstock were conditioned at 19 °C and fed three different microalgal diets. Two were single-species diets: Rhodomonas salina... |
