Parasitic Effects of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) on Hypopharyngeal Glands of Africanized Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Ciências Agrárias
Pinto, Fábio de Assis; Souza, Gabriely Köerich; Sanches, Marcia Aparecida; Serrão, José Eduardo.
The mite Varroa destructor (Anderson & Truemann 2000) (Acari: Varroidae) is one of the most studied parasites of Apis mellifera, as it causes many losses in apicultural business worldwide. Several research studies have demonstrated distinct levels of virulence of the mite and increased colony mortality rates due to its infestation; however only a few studies report the mite's effects on specific tissues, glands or other organs in bees. In this context, this study was conducted with the aim of studying the parasitic effect of the mite V. destructor on hypopharyngeal glands of Africanized A. mellifera. Mean gland cell areas for bees with and without mite infestations were significantly different. Variations in the number of vesicles and the presence of...

Parasitóides Associados a Cochonilhas e Aleirodídeos (Sternorrhyncha) de Plantas Cítricas no Estado do Rio de Janeiro Ciências Agrárias
Rodrigues, William Costa; Cassino, Paulo Cesar Rodrigues.

The formation of the twin resting cysts in the dinoflagellate Dissodinium pseudolunula, a parasite of copepod eggs ArchiMer
Gomez, Fernando; Artigas, Luis Felipe.
The dinoflagellate Dissodinium pseudolunula is the most common and widespread ecto-parasite of copepod eggs in neritic waters. When the host is absent, the species survives with a distinctive pair of twin resting cysts described as Pyrocystis margalefii. Based on live samples, the formation of the twin resting cysts is illustrated here for the first time. The gymnodinioid infective cells did not form overwintering cysts under unfavourable conditions. These are formed inside the secondary lunate sporangium.

Etude d'un Microorganisme de Type Chlamydien chez la Palourde Ruditapes Decussatus L. ArchiMer
The authors study a chlamydial micro-organism parasite of the digestive epithelium of the carpet shell Ruditapes decussatus. The action of this microorganism seems of little import : the intracellular infection is limited to a small number of cells and does not cause any serious lesion in the digestive epithelium.

Les parasites d'Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792), Bothidae, dans le golfe du Lion (cote francaise de la Mediterranee) et leur influence sur les formules leucocytaires des poissons hotes ArchiMer
Douellou, L; Bastide-guillaume, C; Romestand, B; Trilles, J.
Arnoglossus laterna is only infested by intestinal parasites. Each parasite distribution is independent of the distribution of other parasites and also independent of the sex of host. When a fish is infested by a great number of the two helminths Acanthocephaloides and Bothriocephalus clavibothrium , the proportion of lymphocytes tends to decrease and the proportion of neutrophils tends to increase (inflammatory response). Important infestation by Scolex pleuronectis induces an increase of the thrombocyte count for 100 counted leucocytes. After infestation by the nematode Thynnascaris sp. alone or with another parasite, even by small number, the proportion of lymphocytes decreases and the proportion of neutrophils increases.

Temporal changes in lipid condition and parasitic infection by digenean metacercariae of young-of-year common sole Solea solea (L.) in an Atlantic nursery ground (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Galois, Robert; Begout, Marie-laure; Sasal, Pierre; Lagardere, Francoise.
Little attention has been paid to flatfish parasitism as a potential factor of variation in year-class strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parasitic infection and nutritional condition of young-of-year (YOY) common sole. Sole were collected monthly from May (early settlement) to November 2004 in a mussel pole culture area, using a push-net or a trawl, and dissected for parasite identification and counts. Total lipids were extracted from the whole body and lipid classes quantified. Triacylglycerols to sterols (free form) ratio (TAG/ST) was used as an index of nutritional status. Digenean metacercariae infection, characterized by two dominant genera, displayed clear seasonal dynamics and the highest records yet reported...

Resultats d'une intervention sur une parasitose a Proctoeces maculatus (Trematoda, Digenea) affectant la mytiliculture de l'ouest Cotentin ArchiMer
Lebreton, J; Lubert, P.
In 1983, the parasitism of Mytilus edulis L. by Proctoeces maculatus (Loose, 1901) Odhner, 1911 (Trematoda, Digenea, Fellodistomatidae), was recorded for the first time by the authors from mussels farming on stakes (Western Cotentin). After analysing the distribution of the prevalence on the shore and bibliographical data, it was suggested that this parasite must follow a biological cycle that had never been observed on the French coasts and that the most probable host of eggs producer - adult or progenetic metacercaria - would not be a fish but the Prosobranch Gasteropod Nucella lapillus . This was confirmed in 1987. This discovery enabled the authors to support a campaign of eradication of this mussels predatory mollusc. In 1990, the parasitism has...

Spatial variability in digenean metacercariae infection of 0-group common sole Solea solea among nurseries along the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Begout, Marie-laure; Sasal, Pierre.
We sampled 0-group sole juveniles (N = 174) in September and October 2003 in 9 major nurseries located along the French Atlantic coast (English Channel and Bay of Biscay). 0-group sole were infected with 3 genera of digenean metacercariae, Timoniella spp. (Acanthostomidae), Prosorhynchus crucibulum and Prosorhynchus sp. A (Bucephalidae), Podocotyle sp. (Opecoelidae), and an unidentified species of Digenea. Parasite infection levels in the English Channel nurseries were lower, and the community composition was different from Bay of Biscay nurseries. We hypothesize that the difference between geographic areas was due to differences in first intermediate host communities and, to a lesser extent, because of lower temperatures in the English Channel compared to...

Effect of trematode parasites on cockle Cerastoderma edule growth and condition index: a transplant experiment ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, X.; Bazairi, H.; Culloty, S..
We quantified the effect of trematode parasites in cockles through a 303 d transplant experiment. Cockles were sampled in 3 different sites on the southwest coast of France characterized by 3 different trematode communities, i.e. Royan (RO): high Meiogymnophallus minutus abundance near cockle heart, South Arguin (SA): high Himasthla interrupta abundance in the mantle margin, and North Arguin (NA): almost free of trematodes. Sampled cockles were individually tagged and placed in different cages at Banc d'Arguin, Arcachon Bay. At the end of the experiment, RO cockles had lost their trematodes, highlighting the fact that trematode lifespan can be short, while SA cockles maintained their trematode load. When cockles were the second intermediate host, there was...

Infestation of the cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata, C. gigas and their first-generation hybrids by the copepod Myicola ostreae: differences in susceptibility and host response ArchiMer
Batista, F. M.; Boudry, Pierre; Dos Santos, A.; Renault, Tristan; Ruano, F..
We Studied the prevalence and intensity of the parasitic copepod Myicola ostreae in 2 closely related oysters Crassostrea angulata and C. gigas and their F1 hybrids. The effects on host and host reaction were also analysed to better understand host-parasite relationships between copepods and bivalve molluscs. Full reciprocal crosses were carried out between C. angulata and C. gigas and the progenies were reared in the wild in Ria Formosa Lagoon (Portugal), allowing natural infestation by M. ostreae. Prevalence and intensity were significantly higher in C. angulata than in C. gigas. The parasite level of F1 hybrids was similar to C. angulata and significantly higher than in C. gigas. The results of our study support a hypothesis of dominantly inherited...

The poor health of deep-water species in the context of fishing activity and a warming climate: will populations of Molva species rebuild or collapse? ArchiMer
Lloret, Josep; Serrat, Alba; Þórðarson, Guðmundur; Helle, Kristin; Jadaud, Angelique; Bruno, Isabel; Ordines, Francesc; Sartor, Paolo; Carbonara, Pierluigi; Rätz, Hans-joachim.
Many deep‐water fish populations, being k‐selected species, have little resilience to overexploitation and may be at serious risk of depletion as a consequence. Sea warming represents an additional threat. In this study, the condition, or health, of several populations of common ling (Molva molva), blue ling (M. dypterygia) and Mediterranean or Spanish ling (M. macrophthalma) inhabiting different areas in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean was evaluated, in order to shed light on the challenges these deep water species are facing in the context of fishing activity and a warming climate. The data on the condition of Molva populations which we analyze here has been complemented with data on abundance and, for the southernmost species (Mediterranean...
