DAIRY PRODUCTION OF ‘SAANEN’ GOATS BASED ON METEOROLOGICAL VARIABLES AND FUTURE CLIMATE SCENARIOS REA
Pequeno,Izaac D.; Turco,Silvia H. N.; Silva,Thieres G. F. da; Facó,Olivardo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to modeling and bioclimatic zoning of ‘Saanen’ goat milk production in northeastern Brazil. Data were obtained from a 14-year dairy control program for 246 ‘Saanen’ goat matrices. Dairy production meteorological influence and mathematical modeling were assessed through statistical analyses such as Pearson’s correlation matrix and path analysis. Bioclimatic zoning for current and future scenarios, with climate changes, were delineated using inverse-square distance (ISD) and spherical model (kriging) interpolations. Results showed maximum air temperature to contribute substantially to goat dairy production; therefore, its modeling was based thereon. Current and future dairy production maps highlighted Maranhão and Piauí as regions...

Genetic parameter and correlation estimates of processing traits in half-sib progenies of tropical-adapted carrot germplasm Horticultura Brasileira
Vieira,Jairo V; Silva,Giovani Olegario da; Boiteux,Leonardo S.
The estimate of the genetic parameters associated with processing (fresh-cut) traits, including root length (RL), is crucial for carrot breeding programs in tropical areas. The cultivar Alvorada is an important germplasm due to its resistance to nematodes, leaf blight, heat-tolerance, and high carotenoid content. Seventy-four 'Alvorada' half-sib progenies were evaluated during the summer of 2005 in the Federal District, Brazil, in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Thirteen competitive plants in each block were randomly selected and evaluated and/or classified for RL and for number of leaves (NL), leaf length (LL), root tip type (RT), root mass (RW), crown shape (CS), root diameter (RD), and xylem diameter (XD). The Pearson's...

Yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits used in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency in corn PAB
Morais,Pedro Patric Pinho; Sousa,Massaine Bandeira e; Galli,Giovanni; Andrade,Luciano Rogério Braatz e; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Oliveira,Aluízio Borém de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to examine the possibility of using yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in corn. Sixty-four inbred lines were evaluated under two nitrogen fertilization levels: ideal and low. The evaluations were performed at three phenological stages: eight fully-expanded leaves, tasseling stage, and physiological maturity. It is possible to select superior lines for NUE, but the yield components did not show differential behavior under the different nitrogen levels evaluated. Root, reproductive, and physiological traits are not promising for early selection of corn lines with high NUE. Likewise, the eight-leaves and tasseling stages were not...

Pimentel,Anelise Maria Hammes; Souza,João Ricardo Malheiros de; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Moreira,Heden Luiz Marques; Rechsteiner,Sandra Mara da Encarnação Fiala; Pimentel,Cláudio Alves; Martins,Charles Ferreira.
ABSTRACT This study used path analysis to establish the direct, indirect, and total effects of body linear and angular measurements on subjective morphological scores of the 247 Criollo horses that participated in their most important performance event, Freio de Ouro, in 2012. Freio de Ouro is the only event of the Criollo breed that considers morphology. Measurements of wither height, thoracic girth, cannon bone girth, body length, metatarsus length, croup length, shoulder width, head length, neck length, and upper neck girth, and the angles of rump, shoulder, and hock were taken. These morphometric measurements collectively explained 83% of the variation in morphological score. The measurements with the greatest total effects on score were neck length...

Effects of light availability and growth rate on leaf lifespan of four temperate rainforest Proteaceae RChHN
LUSK,CHRISTOPHER H; CORCUERA,LUIS J.
Although comparative studies have revealed much about the environmental correlates of leaf lifespan and its integration with other leaf traits, a comprehensive theory of leaf lifespan is still lacking. The influence of growth rate on self-shading may be a key proximate determinant of both inter- and intra-specific variation in leaf lifespans. If this were the case, we would expect leaf lifespans of fast-growing light-demanding species to respond more strongly to light environment than those of shade-tolerant species. We monitored growth and leaf survival of juvenile trees of four temperate rainforest Proteaceae in southern Chile, in order to explore the influences of light environment and self-shading on leaf lifespan. Leaf lifespans tended to decrease...

Early indirect selection for nitrogen use efficiency in maize1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Caixeta,Débora Santos; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso.
Several studies to evaluate nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) have been carried out using early growth stages. However, there are no scientific reports on the ideal stage for evaluation and on which characteristics have the highest correlation with the NUE at that stage. The aim therefore was to identify the phenological stages and secondary characteristics which maximize accuracy in early indirect selection for NUE in maize. To do this, three endogamic maize strains were evaluated in a completely randomised design with five replications, in a triple factorial scheme (strains x N levels x phenological stage), at two contrasting nitrogen levels: low and high nitrogen. The plants were evaluated at five growth stages: stage nine (V9), with 14 fully-developed...

Wheat seedling emergence estimated from seed analysis Scientia Agricola
Boligon,Alexandra Augusti; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col; Lopes,Sidinei José; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Garcia,Danton Camacho.
There are various vigor tests for the evaluation of seeds physiological quality, however, few studies correlate this tests with plants emergency. This study aimed at identifying wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seed analysis variables that best predict seedling emergence. Wheat seeds (CEP 30 cultivar) were divided into two batches, one initially subjected to the accelerated ageing process and forming the low-quality batch, and the other, without application of the accelerated ageing process, to compose a high-quality batch. The following seed test variables were evaluated: (i) percentage of normal seedlings in the germination tests, (ii) initial germination counting, (iii) accelerated ageing, (iv) cold test without soil, (v) germination speed index, and (vi)...

Genetic analysis of wheat grains using digital imaging and their relationship to enhance grain weight Scientia Agricola
Ali,Ahmad; Ullah,Zahid; Alam,Naveed; Naqvi,S.M. Saqlan; Jamil,Muhammad; Bux,Hadi; Sher,Hassan.
ABSTRACT: Phenomic characterization through digital imaging (DI) can capture the three dimensional variation in wheat grain size and shape using different image orientations. Digital imaging may help identifying genomic regions controlling grain morphology using association mapping with simple sequence repeats (SSRs) markers. Accordingly, seed shape phenotypic data of a core collection of 55 wheat genotypes, previously characterized for osmotic and drought tolerance, were produced using computer based Smart grain software. Measured dimensions included seed volume, area, perimeters, length, width, length to width ratio, circularity, horizontal deviation from ellipse (HDEV), vertical deviation from ellipse (VDEV), factor form density (FFD) etc. The thousand...

Quantitative trait locus mapping associated with earliness and fruit weight in tomato Scientia Agricola
Hernández-Bautista,Aurelio; Lobato-Ortiz,Ricardo; García-Zavala,José Jesús; López-Fortoso,Fernando; Cruz-Izquierdo,Serafín; Chávez-Servia,José Luis; Cadeza-Espinosa,Marisol.
ABSTRACT The flowering time is regarded as an important factor that affects yield in various crops. In order to understand how the molecular basis controlling main components of earliness in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), and to deduce whether the correlation between fruit weight, days to flowering and seed weight, is caused by pleiotropic effects or genetic linkage, a QTLs analysis was carried out using an F2 interspecific population derived from the cross of S. lycopersicum and S. pimpinellifolium. The analysis revealed that most of the components related to earliness were independent due to the absence of phenotypic correlation and lack of co-localization of their QTLs. QTLs affecting the flowering time showed considerable variation over time in...
