Cultural landscapes are appreciated for the plethora of ecosystem services that they provide to society. They are, however, subject to rapid and fundamental transformations across Europe, mainly as a result of intensification or abandonment of land uses. Our objective is to assess the possible future drivers of cultural landscape changes and their likely impacts on ecosystem services provision as perceived by local actors. We present stakeholder-based scenarios for the Swabian Alb, a biosphere reserve in southern Germany, projected to the yr 2040. On their basis, we explore the possibilities and limitations of local civil engagement for landscape conservation and development in the face of increasing global influences. The steps of the process are (a)...

Evolucao agropecuaria da regiao nuclear dos cerrados 1970-1980. Infoteca-e
Estes centros recebem, constantemente, significativo fluxo migratorio rural-rural, oriundo, sobretudo, do sul do Pais e dispoe de...

A PRODUÇÃO CAMPONESA EM FOCO: PASSOS METODOLÓGICOS PARA O CÁLCULO DE GRAVITAÇÃO ECONÔMICA AgEcon
Andre, Joao Vicente.

Integration Effects in Border Regions - A Survey of Economic Theory and Empirical Studies AgEcon
Niebuhr, Annekatrin; Stiller, Silvia.
Border regions and border effects currently attract a lot of attention in political practice and economic research. Substantial interest in regions located along the frontiers of integrating countries is predominantly inspired by the presumption that their specific geographic position might cause peculiarities in economic adjustments to integration. This survey explores whether economic theory and empirical studies support the assessment that integration effects concentrate in border regions. Economic theory alone allows only very vague conclusions about the spatial effects of integration. Depending on specific circumstances, border regions might benefit, lose or not be affected by integration. Empirical research on border regions - undertaken so far -...

Rathmann, Regis; Hoff, Debora Nayar; Santos, Omar Inacio Benedetti; Padula, Antonio Domingos.
Studies indicate the existence of a situation of underdevelopment in the southern half of Rio Grande do Sul, directly correlated with the farming and rice culture crises. The later suffers from the macroeconomic policies linked to the opening of the economy and with the pressures of the increase of competitiveness. This process has made the region present inferior performances than State averages when indicators such as GDP and per capita income are analyzed. Seeking to reduce these inequalities, governmental sectors have been elaborating development strategies through the utilization of the regional agricultural vocation as well as the insertion of differentiated chains in local agribusiness. One of these experiences is the Program for the Development of...

Russia's Frangible Tendency to Rise: What Can Be Observed at Macro- and Meta-Level? AgEcon
Voigt, Peter.
This paper is an extraction of some results achieved in a comprehensive study of Russia's transition in its regional as well as sectoral dimension. Thereby, the transition process between 1993 - 2000 has been approximated by aggregated developments of productivity, technical change, and technical efficiency which all have been calculated by a Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). The obtained results have been analyzed with respect to any institutional circumstances in a second analytical step. Based on that, in a third step, some political call for actions have been specified as well as addressed according to regional/federal responsibility. The study has shown a notable heterogeneity within the considered regional as well as sectoral transition paths....

Impact of Economic Growth on Income Inequality: A Regional Perspective AgEcon
Majumdar, Shibalee; Partridge, Mark D..
Impact of Economic Growth on Income Inequality: A Regional Perspective Shibalee Majumdar and Mark Partridge Egalitarianism refers to the doctrine of the equality of mankind and the desirability of political, economic and social equality. In this paper, we are going to refer to the concept of economic equality. Theory shows that income inequality is a condition that prevails along with economic growth. According to the utilitarian view, income inequality must exist along with economic growth in order to maximize social welfare. This is in sharp contrast to the egalitarian view according to which, all members of the society should have equal access to all economic resources in terms of economic power, wealth and...

The impact of the wine industry on hotels and restaurants in Walla Walla AgEcon
Storchmann, Karl.
Walla Walla enjoys the fastest growing wine industry in the State of Washington, if not in the whole U.S. This paper examines the impact of this extraordinary growth on the revenue of regional hotels and restaurants. Employing a dynamic quarterly panel model at the county level we show that the regional reputation as high quality wine county, as expressed by critical wine points in the national wine press, has a significant effect on the tourism industry. Less than 17% of all restaurant and approximately 40% of all hotel revenue is tied to the wine cluster (2007). However, regional reputation is short-living and needs to be constantly re-earned.

AZ EURÓPAI AGRÁRPOLITIKA ESZMÉNYEI ÉS REALITÁSAI AgEcon
Udovecz, Gabor.
Regional identity as a trigger for agricultural regional development AgEcon
Mettepenningen, Evy; Mazodier, Marion; Vandermeulen, Valerie; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
Regional development is receiving a lot of attention nowadays in European policy. A possible stepping stone to achieve regional development is regional identity. This paper investigates whether regional identity can contribute to the specific case of agricultural regional development. One possible way for agriculture to profit from regional identity is by diversifying farm activities. The paper shows that regional identity can stimulate farmers to take up diversification and can also stimulate inhabitants of the region to consume products directly from the farmer.
