A Review of Tools for Incorporating Community Knowledge, Preferences, and Values into Decision Making in Natural Resources Management Ecology and Society
Lynam, Timothy; University of Zimbabwe; Tim.Lynam@csiro.au; de Jong, Wil; Center for Integrated Area Studies, Kyoto University; wdejong@cias.kyoto-u.ac.jp; Sheil, Douglas; CIFOR; d.sheil@cgiar.org; Kusumanto, Trikurnianti; CIFOR; t.kusumanto@cgiar.org; Evans, Kirsten; CIFOR; kristenannevans@hotmail.com.
We survey and evaluate selected participatory tools that have been proven effective in natural resources management and research during our extensive experience with forest communities. We first establish a framework for our analysis by identifying a set of criteria for evaluating each tool. Next we provide a brief description of each tool, followed by an evaluation and comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of all the tools examined and how well they can be adapted to diverse contexts. We also provide suggestions for avoiding common pitfalls. Our findings suggest that most tools are flexible enough to be adapted to a range of applications, and that results are more robust when tools are used in concert. Practitioners should not be disturbed when...

Do what I say, not what I do: Are we linking research and decision-making about invasive species in Patagonia? Ecología austral
Anderson,Christopher D; Valenzuela,Alejandro E. J.
Invasion biology is well-positioned epistemologically, theoretically and practically to address the challenge of being both scientifically and socially relevant. Yet, how well are we achieving these two dimensions of academic inquiry and impact? We explored this issue by a) surveying Argentine invasion biology practitioners (students, scientists and managers) to determine the types of collaborations they report and their stated preferences regarding research thematic priorities (autecology, impacts, management, patterns/distribution, presence/absence, processes/mechanisms, policy, social), and b) reviewing the invasion biology literature in Argentine Patagonia to establish research productivity, the publications' taxonomic, methodological (review,...

ECOLOGICAL BIOGEOGRAPHY: A REVIEW WITH EMPHASIS ON CONSERVATION AND THE NEUTRAL MODEL BIOGEOGRAFIA ECOLOGICA: REVISION CON ENFASIS EN CONSERVACION Y EL "MODELO NEUTRAL" Gayana
Monge-Nájera,Julián.
Ecological biogeography studies the factors that define the spatial distribution of species in the present time. This review summarises recent contributions on ecological biogeography. Most recent articles report environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and salinity as key elements in the ecological biogeography of many species (followed by other organisms and genetic characteristics). Molecular data indicate that some "unexplainable" ranges are artifacts caused by taxonomic misidentification (several species erroneously classified as a single species). Island biogeography theory is often adequate for conservation management, and the new neutral model of ecological biogeography does not fit all species on which it has been tested. Global warming...

Strawberry breeding in Brazil: current momentum and perspectives Horticultura Brasileira
Zeist,André Ricardo; Resende,Juliano Tadeu V de.
ABSTRACT Brazil depends almost entirely on imported strawberry cultivars, which burdens production costs and results in the use of genotypes with less adaptation to the Brazilian cropping conditions. To reverse this scenario, it is necessary to strengthen strawberry breeding in Brazil. Otherwise, the country will remain dependent on imported cultivars and producers will continue to be required to collect royalties. In this context, public institutions in Brazil, such as the State University of the Midwest Paraná (UNICENTRO), have been successfully conducting strawberry breeding programs, with the objective of launching cultivars in the short term. Crosses between the cultivars in use in the country, with the subsequent development and selection of...

Genetic resources of vegetable crops: a survey in the Brazilian germplasm collections pictured through papers published in the journals of the Brazilian Society for Horticultural Science Horticultura Brasileira
Sudré,Cláudia P; Leonardecz,Eduardo; Rodrigues,Rosana; Amaral Júnior,Antônio T do; Moura,Maria da CL; Gonçalves,Leandro SA.
The research on plant genetic resources is essential for the conservation of genetic diversity and accessions' divergence studies, as a basis for plant breeding. Aiming to know the state of art in this subject, a historical survey was carried out in Revista de Olericultura and in Horticultura Brasileira, from 1961 to 2006, searching for papers dealing with vegetable crops genetic resources. In each of the papers, the species studied, first author institution, publication year, applied software, number of accessions and descriptors, and the multivariate techniques used were registered. Based on these characteristics, papers were grouped using multivariate analysis. Sixty-one papers dealt somehow with genetic resources in the time covered by the survey, from...

Description of a new genus for Cyrtorhina balabacensis Serène, 1971,with notes on the Cyrtorhininae (Decapoda, Brachyura, Raninidae) ArchiMer
Ng, Peter K. L.; Guinot, Danièle.
The raninid genus Cyrtorhina Monod, 1956, is revised and restricted to Cyrtorhina granulosa Monod, 1956, from West Africa. A new genus, Flaberhina, is established for C. balabacensis Serène, 1971 from the Philippines and New Caledonia. Despite their superficial similarities, the two genera can easily be separated by the structures of the carapace, eye, antenna, pterygostome, thoracic sternum, pleon and penis. The taxonomy of the subfamily Cyrtorhininae Guinot & Ng, 2020, which contains both fossil and extant taxa, is also reviewed.

Indices for assessing coral reef fish biodiversity: the need for a change in habits ArchiMer
Loiseau, Nicolas; Gaertner, Jean-claude.
We present the first representative and quantified overview of the indices used worldwide for assessing the biodiversity of coral reef fishes. On this basis, we discuss the suitability and drawbacks of the indices most widely used in the assessment of coral fish biodiversity. An extensive and systematic survey of the literature focused on coral reef fish biodiversity was conducted from 1990 up to the present. We found that the multicomponent aspect of biodiversity, which is considered as a key feature of biodiversity for numerous terrestrial and marine ecosystems, has been poorly taken into account in coral reef fish studies. Species richness is still strongly dominant while other diversity components, such as functional diversity, are underestimated even...

Climatic records over the past 30 ka from temperate Australia - a synthesis from the Oz-INTIMATE workgroup ArchiMer
Petherick, L.; Bostock, H.; Cohen, T. J.; Fitzsimmons, K.; Tibby, J.; Fletcher, M. -s.; Moss, P.; Reeves, J.; Mooney, S.; Barrows, T.; Kemp, J.; Jansen, J.; Nanson, G.; Dosseto, A..
Temperate Australia sits between the heat engine of the tropics and the cold Southern Ocean, encompassing a range of rainfall regimes and falling under the influence of different climatic drivers. Despite this heterogeneity, broad-scale trends in climatic and environmental change are evident over the past 30 ka. During the early glacial period (similar to 30-22 ka) and the Last Glacial Maximum (similar to 22-18 ka), climate was relatively cool across the entire temperate zone and there was an expansion of grasslands and increased fluvial activity in regionally important Murray Darling Basin. The temperate region at this time appears to be dominated by expanded sea ice in the Southern Ocean forcing a northerly shift in the position of the oceanic fronts and...

The effects of superchilled storage at - 2 degrees C on the microbiological and organoleptic properties of cold-smoked salmon before retail Display ArchiMer
Beaufort, Annie; Cardinal, Mireille; Le-bail, Alain; Midelet-bourdin, Graziella.
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of superchilling (-2 degrees C) on the evolution of Listeria monocytogenes and organoleptic characteristics of cold-smoked salmon samples. An Hadamard matrix experimental design was carried out on artificially inoculated samples stored at +4 degrees C for 10 d and at +8 degrees C for 18 d to know the influence of four factors: salt content, strain, cold stiffening and superchilling time, on the level of L.monocytogenes in cold-smoked salmon. The growth of L. monocytogenes in naturally contaminated cold-smoked salmon and the organoleptic properties were investigated under superchilling conditions. Superchilling (-2 degrees C for 28 d) had a limited impact on some of the organoleptic properties but the...

Pulsed-light system as a novel food decontamination technology: a review ArchiMer
Elmnasser, Noura; Guillou, Sandrine; Leroi, Francoise; Orange, Nicole; Bakhrouf, Amina; Federighi, Michel.
In response to consumer preferences for high quality foods that are as close as possible to fresh products, athermal technologies are being developed to obtain products with high levels of organoleptic and nutritional quality but free of any health risks. Pulsed light is a novel technology that rapidly inactivates pathogenic and food spoilage microorganisms. It appears to constitute a good alternative or a complement to conventional thermal or chemical decontamination processes. This food preservation method involves the use of intense, short-duration pulses of broad-spectrum light. The germicidal effect appears to be due to both photochemical and photothermal effects. Several high intensity flashes of broad spectrum light pulsed per second can inactivate...

Review of the biology, ecology and fisheries of Palinurus spp. species of European waters: Palinurus elephas (Fabricius, 1787) and Palinurus mauritanicus (Gruvel, 1911) ArchiMer
Gõni, R; Latrouite, Daniel.
Palinurus elephas and Palinurus mauritanicus are the only species of the family Palinuridae that occur in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. Of the two, Palinurus elephas is the most abundant and accessible and has traditionally been the preferred target of lobster fisheries throughout its range. Palinurus mauritanicus has a deeper distribution and has been an important target of fisheries mainly in the Central Eastern Atlantic. The high unit value and the relative scarcity of these species have been important obstacles to research and knowledge of their biology, ecology and fisheries is limited. Nevertheless, over time a considerable number of studies has been conducted, though most of these are contained in university theses or in publications of...

Interglacials, including the present (Holocene) period, are warm, low land ice extent (high sea level), end-members of glacial cycles. Based on a sea level definition, we identify eleven interglacials in the last 800,000years, a result that is robust to alternative definitions. Data compilations suggest that despite spatial heterogeneity, Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5e (last interglacial) and 11c (similar to 400ka ago) were globally strong (warm), while MIS 13a (similar to 500ka ago) was cool at many locations. A step change in strength of interglacials at 450ka is apparent only in atmospheric CO2 and in Antarctic and deep ocean temperature. The onset of an interglacial (glacial termination) seems to require a reducing precession parameter (increasing...

The social and economic impact of aquaculture : a European review ArchiMer
Neiland, A.e.; Shaw, S.a.; Bailly, Denis.
This paper undertakes a preliminary evaluation of the social and economic impact of aquaculture from both empirical and theoretical standpoints. Drawing initially on background information collected for the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) in a recent study by the European Association of Fisheries Economists (EAFE), a number of important indicators and trends (e.g. production, employment, market structure) are examined which indicate that aquaculture is of increasing significance in many regions. Whilst some socio-economic information is available for ail European countries, this information base is weak in comparison to that for biological and technical aspects of aquaculture and does not permit a comprehensive evaluation at the present time....

Walter Thiel's Embalming Method: Review of Solutions and Applications in Different Fields of Biomedical Research International Journal of Morphology
Ottone,Nicolás Ernesto; Vargas,Claudia A; Fuentes,Ramón; del Sol,Mariano.
Walter Thiel developed the method that enables preservation of the body with natural colors in 1992. It consists in the application of an intravascular injection formula, and maintaining the corps submerged for a determinate period of time in the immersion solution in the pool. After immersion, it is possible to maintain the corps in a hermetically sealed container, thus avoiding dehydration outside the pool. The aim of this work was to review the Thiel method, searching all scientific articles describing this technique from its development point of view, and application in anatomy and morphology teaching, as well as in clinical and surgical practice. Most of these studies were carried out in Europe. We used PubMed, Ebsco and Embase databases with the...

Parthenogenesis in scorpions: some history - new data J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lourenço,W. R..
Parthenogenesis, a rare phenomenon in Chelicerates, apart from mites, is reviewed in scorpions, notably Tityus serrulatus Lutz & Mello from Brazil, Tityus columbianus (Thorell) from Colombia and Tityus metuendus Pocock from Peru and Brazil. Thelytokous parthenogenesis (with all-female broods) is most often observed. The only known exception to this is T. metuendus in which arrhenotoky (all-male broods) has been observed. In the present paper, current ideas regarding parthenogenesis in scorpions are summarized. The notion of geographic parthenogenesis ('parthénogenèse géographique'), coined by Vandel in 1928, is discussed. This rule is tentatively exemplified by a new case of parthenogenesis reported in a scorpion of the genus Tityus C. L. Koch,...
