Nine karyomorphs for spiny rats of the genus Proechimys (Echimyidae, Rodentia) from North and Central Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Machado,Taís; Silva,Maria José de J.; Leal-Mesquita,Emygdia Rosa; Carmignotto,Ana Paula; Yonenaga-Yassuda,Yatiyo.
Spiny rats of the genus Proechimys are morphologically diverse, widely distributed and have diploid numbers ranging from 2n = 14-16 to 2n = 62. In this paper we present cytogenetical data and brief comments on morphological and biogeographical issues related to spiny rats. In our sample of 42 spiny rats collected from 12 Brazilian Amazonian tropical rainforest and the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) sites we detected nine karyological entities: four different karyomorphs with 2n = 30, three with 2n = 28, one with 2n = 15 and one with 2n = 44. Based on qualitative morphological characters these karyomorphs can be allocated to five species within the goeldii, guyannensis and longicaudatus species groups.

Diversity and habitat preference of medium and large-sized mammals in an urban forest fragment of southwestern Amazon Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Borges,Luiz H. M.; Calouro,Armando. M.; Botelho,André L. M.; Silveira,Marcos.
We assessed the species composition and abundance of medium and large-sized mammals in an urban forest fragment in the Brazilian Amazon, and recorded the preference of some species for particular phytophysiognomies. We placed nine transects with 20 sand plots each in three phytophysiognomies: open rainforest with a dominance of bamboos (OFB), open rainforest with palm trees (OFP), and dense rainforest (DF). We calculated species abundance as the number of records/plot.day, in a total of 2,700 plots.day. We recorded twelve mammal species; Sylvilagus brasiliensis (Linnaeus, 1758) and Dasyprocta fuliginosa (Wagler, 1831) were the most abundant. The results differed among phytophysiognomies: DF presented the highest mammal diversity, whereas the species...

ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT DURING EARLY POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENT DECREASES PARVALBUMIN EXPRESSION IN THE RAT SOMATOSENSORY CORTEX International Journal of Morphology
Inzunza,Oscar; Bravo,Hermes; Fernández,Víctor.
In the rat brain, parvalbumin (PV) expression starts on postnatal day 8 and comprises a heterogeneous population of nonpyramidal GABAergic neurons. In the present work, an immunohistochemical study was done on control and experimental rats submitted to enriched environmental conditions between postnatal days 3 to 18 or 3 to 24. Counts of PV+ neurons were made in the dorsomedial and in the ventrolateral regions of the somatosensory cortex. In control animals, PV+ neurons reached a peak on day 24 declining towards day 120. In these rats a peculiar distribution pattern was detected in which immunoreactive neurons are more numerous in the dorsomedial than ventrolateral regions as well in infragranular than supragranular layers and in posterior regions than...

Efficacy of anticoagulant drugs as rodenticides and genetic variation on Vkorc1 of Mus musculus from Buenos Aires province (Argentina) JBAG
Espinosa,M.B.
The relationship between anticoagulant rodenticides and the gene for vitamin K epoxide reductase has been extensively studied The significance of mutations in Vkorc1 on the degree of response to anticoagulants is controversial. The implication of the VKORC1 function in pest control drives the attention to a wide range of factors that may be influencing the resistance to rodenticides, an issue that will be discussed in this article. Anticoagulants are used as rodenticides as well as to improve human health. The interactions between VKORC1 and CYP4F18 (cytochrome P450) are complex. It is likely that the coagulation response may be due to a diverse expression of the Vkorc1 gene and its interaction with the expression of Cyp4f18, and to the polymorphisms...

Hantaviruses as emergent zoonoses J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Ullmann,LS; Souza,LC; Langoni,H.
Hantaviruses belong to the Bunyaviridae family, which consists of vector-borne viruses. These viruses can provoke two infection types: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) - which occurs in the Old World - and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) - an emergent zoonosis that can be found in many countries of the western hemisphere. Rodents are hantavirus reservoirs and each species seems to host a different virus type. Humans acquire the infection by inhaling contaminated aerosol particles eliminated by infected animals. The factors involved in the emergence of hantavirus infections in the human population include ecological modifications and changes in human activities. The most important risk factor is contact between man and rodents, as a...

The agouti Dasyprocta leporina (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae) as seed disperser of the palm Astrocaryum aculeatissimum Mastozool. neotrop.
Pires,Alexandra S; Galetti,Mauro.
Some large-seeded plants depend heavily on agoutis for seedling recruitment. The importance of Dasyprocta leporina as seed disperser of the Atlantic Forest palm Astrocaryum aculeatissimum was evaluated using camera-traps and seed removal experiments. Agoutis were registered at 67% of the records obtained through the monitoring of mature fruits; palms were visited from 07:00 to 18:45 h. Dispersal distances ranged from 0.5 to 48.7 m (mean ± sd = 6.8 ± 9.1 m) and most of the removed seeds were buried (57.8%). These results corroborate the importance of agoutis for the seed dispersal of Astrocaryum palms.

A comparison of three methods to estimate variations in the relative abundance of moutain vizcachas (Lagidium viscacia) in the High Andes ecosystems Mastozool. neotrop.
Lucherini,Mauro; Reppucci,Juan I.; Luengos Vidal,Estela.
Mountain vizcachas are large rodents that constitute the main prey of the High Andes meso-carnivores. We compared the line transect pellet count, observation rate and photographic rate methods to estimate the relative abundance of Mountain vizcachas in the High Andes ecosystems. Although a more formal validation based on the comparison with true abundances is desirable, our results suggested that these simple and affordable indices are promising methods, especially if protocols and sampling efforts are carefully standardized. We recommend the use of photographic rates, which are likely to provide the most reliable estimates, especially where Mountain vizcachas are active at night.

Cytogenetics and redescription of Graomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from Chumbicha, Catamarca, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Lanzone,Cecilia; Novillo,Agustina; Suárez,Natalia S.; Ojeda,Ricardo A..
The taxonomy, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of the genus Graomys are confusing. In this note we report karyotypic data for specimens of Graomys collected in Chumbicha, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Their karyotypes agree with G. centralis with 2n = 42. The individuals from Chumbicha are similar in morphology to G. griseoflavus but smaller. Our results suggest that Chumbicha's specimens are conspecific with G. medius. Moreover, we propose to synonymize G. medius with G. centralis. Other data of the genus suggest that the name G. chacoensis should be applied to specimens with 2n = 42.

Efficiency of four trap types in sampling small mammals in forest fragments, Mato Grosso, Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Santos-Filho,Manoel; da Silva,Dionei J.; Sanaiotti,Tânia M..
We sampled the small mammal community inhabiting semi-deciduous forest fragments in Mato Grosso, Brazil, using 4 different types of traps, Tomahawk, Sherman, snap, and pitfall, in order to evaluate the efficiency of different trap types in sampling efforts. During our study, we captured a total of 984 individuals of 27 species over 33 800 trap/nights. Sherman traps captured a significantly greater abundance of individuals and higher species richness than the other 3 types of traps. The Tomahawk and snap traps exhibited similar capture rates, in both the number of individuals and species captured. Pitfall traps captured the fewest numbers of individuals and species and were the only trap type to have different, although not significant, capture rates...

Matson,John O; Ordóñez-Garza,Nicté; Bulmer,Walter; Eckerlin,Ralph P.
Very little is known concerning small mammal ecology and their distribution in the highlands of Guatemala. Small mammals were trapped from five different cloud forests in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Cloud forest elevations ranged from 2600 m to 3350 m. Most sites had evidence of human disturbance with only Cerro Bobí having a relatively pristine forest. A total of 13 species was recorded with the species density at sites ranging from six to ten. Accounts of each species are given. The most common species present was Reithrodontomys sumichrasti, except at Cerro Bobí where Peromyscus guatemalensis was most abundant. Differences between years and between seasons (wet versus dry) were minor. Only the site at Cerro Bobí, with...

Preventing injuries caused by radiotelemetry collars in reintroduced red-rumped agoutis, Dasyprocta leporina (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae), in Atlantic Forest, southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Cid,Bruno; Costa,Rodrigo de C. da; Balthazar,Daniel de A.; Augusto,Anderson M.; Pires,Alexandra S.; Fernandez,Fernando A. S..
Reintroduction has been recognized as a powerful conservation tool, but in order to ensure its success, animal monitoring is highly recommended. One way to monitor released animals is to put radiotelemetry collars on them. These devices, however, can harm the subjects, causing serious wounds. Our objectives in this work were to describe the injuries caused by a radiotelemetry collar model on reintroduced agoutis and to propose modifications to it. We equipped agoutis with TXE-311C radio collars (Telenax Wildlife Telemetry) before releasing them in the wild. They acquired serious wounds and one animal died. We then modified the collar structure to reduce its width and retention of water. After these modifications, the injuries did not occur again. As...

Community structure and population dynamics of small mammals in an urban-sylvatic interface area in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Gentile,Rosana; Cardoso,Thiago S.; Costa-Neto,Sócrates F.; Teixeira,Bernardo R.; D’Andrea,Paulo S..
ABSTRACT The Atlantic Forest is one of the most disturbed Brazilian biomes, with 183 out of 298 species of mammals occurring in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In this study, we aimed to characterize the diversity, community structure, and habitat use of small mammals in the FIOCRUZ Atlantic Forest Campus (CFMA), including areas of Pedra Branca State Park (PBSP, subunit Pau da Fome), state of Rio de Janeiro. We also compared species diversity and composition between two moments 15 years apart (2001 and 2012-2015) and analyzed the population dynamics of the marsupial Didelphis aurita (Wied-Neuwied, 1826). Small mammal captures were made in different habitats: sylvatic-urban interface areas near human dwellings, disturbed forest, and preserved forest areas....

Canaania obesa (Platyhelminthes: Dicrocoeliidae): redescription and new hosts records Rev. Bras. Zool.
Maldonado Junior,Arnaldo; Pinheiro,Jairo; Simões,Raquel de O.; Lanfredi,Reinalda M..
The digenetic trematode Canaania obesa Travassos, 1944 (Dicrocoeliidae) was described as a parasite of the bile ducts of the rodent Akodon cursor Winge, 1887 (Cricetidae) collected in Santa Teresa, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. In the present study, we report the occurrence of C. obesa infecting three additional sigmodontinae rodent species: Akodon montensis Thomas, 1913; Oligoryzomys nigripes Olfers, 1818 and Nectomys squamipes Brants, 1827, from three municipalities situated at Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Scanning electron microscopy showed that this helminth has a leaf-like shape with conical extremities and the ventral mid body protrudes at the acetabulum level. The microtopography of the tegument shows a heterogeneous surface with...

Water economy in rodents: evaporative water loss and metabolic water production RChHN
Cortés,Arturo; Rosenmann,Mario; Bozinovic,Francisco.
Studies on water balance in desert-dwelling granivorous rodents use evaporative water loss (EWL) and metabolic water production (MWP) to evaluate the efficiency of water regulation, expressed by the model Ta @ MWP = EWL, defined by an ambient temperature (Ta) value at (@) which MWP/EWL = 1. Here we evaluate and apply this model (1 - r²) determining water regulation efficiency, based on the energetic cost (MR) to maintain water balance (WB), that is MR-WB. To test the model, EWL was measured and MWP estimated in nine species of rodents from different localities of northern and north-central Chile (II and IV Regions): Octodon degus (Od) and O. lunatus (Olu) (Octodontidae), Abrothrix olivaceus (Ao), A. longipilis (Al), A. andinus (Ad), Phyllotis darwini (Pd),...

Gut size flexibility in rodents: what we know, and don't know, after a century of research RChHN
NAYA,DANIEL E.
Phenotypic plasticity comprises a central concept in the understanding of how organisms interact with their environment, and thus, is a central topic in ecology and evolution. A particular case of phenotypic plasticity is phenotypic flexibility, which refers to reversible change in organism traits due to changes in internal or external environmental conditions. Flexibility of digestive features has been analyzed for more than a century in a myriad of different species and contexts. Studies in rodents on gut size flexibility have been developed mainly from two different áreas of the biological sciences, physiology and ecology. However, as for several other topics related with physiological ecology, both kinds of studies largely developed along sepárate...

Dustbathing and intra-sexual communication of social degus, Octodon degus (Rodentia:Octodontidae) RChHN
EBENSPERGER,LUIS A..
I observed the behavior of captive male and female Octodon degus to assess if dustbathing behavior plays a role in social communication among unfamiliar, same-sex conspecifics. Degus of a first group (control responders) were individually exposed during 10-min tests to an arena containing loose, clean soil. I compared the latency to first dustbathing as well as the overall frequency of dustbathing events recorded to control responders with the corresponding figures recorded to a second group of degus (experimental responders) after they were individually introduced into the same arena but with soil previously used for dustbathing by a same-sex conspecific (depositor). I also compared the location of dustbathing events by experimental responders with that...

Population density and reproduction of two Peruvian leaf-eared mice (Phyllotis spp.) RChHN
ARANA,MARGARITA; RAMÍREZ,OSWALDO; SANTA MARÍA,SERGIO; KUNIMOTO,CESAR; VELARDE,RODRIGO; DE LA CRUZ,CECILIA; RUÍZ,MARíA LUISA.
Population density and reproduction were studied in two leaf-eared mice (Phyllotis spp.) in the Peruvian locality known as Lomas de Lachay. Density varied between 0-3 individuals ha-1 in P. andium, and between 0-12 individuals ha-1 in P. amicus. An annual cycle of population abundance was observed in both species. Phyllotis amicus showed no seasonal reproductive activity, but P. andium had seasonal reproduction with pregnant females principally observed between July and September. Differences in juvenile weight were related to litter size. It is likely that two young was the optimal litter size in the harsh and seasonal xeric environment of Lomas de Lachay. Our results suggest that P. amicus maintains low, highly dispersed populations in a harsh...
