Inception Report The Preparatory Survey on the Project for Fisheries Pormotion in Republic of Ghana OceanDocs
Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
Challenges the fishing ports of Ghana, notably Sekondi Port include the congestion and the deteriorating efficiency due to the increase of users and decreasing quality of catch due to the shortage and ageing of landing facilities, fish handling sheds and ice-making facilities. The Government of Ghana made a request to Japan for an extension of the wharf, construction of additional breakwater, cold storage and ice-making facility at Sekondi Fishing Port in 2010 in order to overcome these challenges. In response the Government of Japan conducted a survey for the project to promote efficiency and improvement of Ghana's fishery sector. The survey was to examine the need, relevance and urgency of the proposed project.

Environmental impact of organic agriculture in temperate regions Organic Eprints
Lynch, D.H.; Halberg, N.; Bhatta, G.D..
Can organic agriculture elaborate a scientifically based, resource-efficien and agroecological approach to low-input farm management? This review examines the literature from temperate regions, with a particular emphasison Canadian and USstudies that relate to environmental and ecological impacts of organic agriculture with respect to (i )soil organic matter storage, (ii) soil quality/soil health, (iii) nutrient loading and risks of off-farm nutrient and agrochemical losses, (iv) biodiversity and (v) energy use and global warming potential. The context and implications of semi-arid conditions and low soil P levels, common to many organic farms in North America, and wide spread adoption of genetically engineered crops in conventional production, is also...

Bio-Schulverpflegung in Deutschland.

Designing for learning: Practical insights from a study on member driven farmer groups Organic Eprints
Olsen, L.E..
With this booklet I attempt to make my master thesis usable in practice. It translates my theoretical study on social learning in farmer groups into practical hands-on advices. I hope my advices will help create fruitful learning environments for existing farmer groups, for those who assist farmer groups in development, and as inspiration for new farmer groups. This booklet is a continuation of my master thesis, written in 2012: Social Learning in Farmer Groups – Field Study in the Rwenzori Region, Western Uganda. The thesis is based on four months of fieldwork, working with three Farmer Family Learning Groups (FFLG). I was assisted by Sustai-nable Agricultural Trainers Network (SATNET) and Organic Denmark (OD). It is dedicated to those who work on FFLG’s,...

GMOs and organic agriculture: Six lessons from Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
GMO moratoria are in place in Australia, in some states and not in others. Is co-existence possible between organic farming and GMO farming? And if so, under what circumstances? Australia has more certified organic land than any other country, with a reported 12.0 million hectares of certified organic land compared to the world total of 37.5 million hectares. In a recent court case, an organic farmer lost his organic certification because of GMO contamination. A total of 325 hectares of his 478 hectare farm were contaminated with GM canola blown from a neighbouring property, and this resulted in the decertification of most of the farm. The organic farmer sued his neighbour, a GMO farmer, on the basis of nuisance or negligence, he sought damages for loss of...

OK-Net Arable online knowledge platform Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Jensen, Allan Leck; Jørgensen, Margit Styrbæk; Kristensen, Helene; Conder, Malgorzata; Micheloni, Cristina; Moeskops, Bram.
The complexity of organic farming requires farmers to have a very high level of knowledge and skills, but exchange on organic farming techniques remains limited. In order to increase productivity and quality in organic arable cropping in Europe, the thematic network OK-Net Arable under Horizon 2020 has the aim to improve the exchange of innovative and traditional knowledge among farmers, farm advisers and scientists. An online platform for knowledge exchange has been created, offering innovative education and end-user material as well as communication between stakeholders. A number of specific tools – providing information about how to put existing knowledge from research and practise into use – have been chosen. They are presented on the platform with the...

Tragfähige Zukunftsbilder für den Biolandbau ausgehend von seinen Wurzeln und Werten (Workshop) Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Patzel, Nikola; Lindenthal, Thomas.

Organic versus GMOs: A case study Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic agriculture versus genetically modified organisms. Are these two agricultural technologies destined for co-existence or conflict? This is a case study from Australia about two neighbours in conflict - Michael Baxter who planted GM canola and Steve Marsh his organic neighbour. A timeline of the events before and after the contamination events of 2010 is presented. GM canola was approved for Australia in 2003 - but the WA government promptly put a moratorium in place. That changed when the WA government changed in 2010. Baxter immediately took advantage of the exemption to grow GM canola. What followed was ... the contamination ... the decertification ... the legal action. There are four elements to this case: nuisance, negligence. injunction &...

Ethikmanagement in der Naturkostbranche - Eine Machbarkeitsstudie Organic Eprints
Lautermann, Christian; Pfriem, Reinhard; Wieland, Josef; Fürst, Michael; Pforr, Sebastian.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Organic Farming –Experiences in Austria Organic Eprints
Gössinger, Katharina; Freyer, Bernhard.
Although the market for organic products has been growing in Austria for a few years, the rising competition of so called regional, natural or sustainable products should be taken seriously. One solution in times of “conventionalisation” of organic farming could be higher ethical standards in organic farming and more effective communication of ethical values, as it has already been practised by a great number of medium-sized and large enterprises under the name of “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR). CSR refers to all services that are beyond legal requirements, performed on a voluntary basis. This article discusses the topic CSR and similar approaches in the Austrian organic sector on the basis of 30 interviews with Austrian organic farmers and...

Förderung und Weiterentwicklung des Ökologischen Landbaus aus betrieblicher Perspektive: Eine Befragung von Landwirt- Innen aus dem Praxis-Forschungs-Netz des Thünen-Institutes Organic Eprints
Rodewald, M.; March, Solveig; Madsen, G.; Brinkmann, Jan.
Organic farming in Germany benefits from a large number of different national and regional political measures, in addition to a positive development of general demand of organic products. Despite these favorable conditions, however, fewer and fewer farms convert to organic farming. With the aim to expand the organically farmed land in Germany, the BMEL initiated the "Strategy for the Future of Organic Farming". One topic is to examine the possibilities of the development and improvement of the current organic subsidies policy. A nationwide survey amongst organic farms will also take into consideration the support of organic farming from the farmers’ point of view. In this context, 218 organic farms from all over Germany who participated in a...

Paisagens e etnoconhecimentos na agricultura Ticuna e Cocama no alto rio Solimões, Amazonas. Organic Eprints

Economic sustainability and risk efficiency of organic versus conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Lein, G; Hardaker, J B; Flaten, O.
Environmental, social and economic attributes are important for the sustainability of a farming system. Resilience is also important yet has seldom been directly considered in evaluations of economic sustainability. In economic terms, resilience has to do with the capacity of the farm business to survive various risks and other shocks. A whole-farm stochastic simulation model over a six-year planning horizon was used to analyse organic and conventional cropping systems using a model of a representative farm in Eastern Norway. The relative economic sustainability of alternative systems under changing assumptions about future technology and price regimes was examined in terms of financial survival to the end of the planning period. The same alternatives were...
