North Sea spawning grounds of the sole (<i>Solea solea</i>) located from the 1984 Belgian plankton survey OMA
Borremans, C..
During spring 1984 large ichthyoplankton surveys were performed to determine the spawning period and the spawning places of the sole in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. In March and April most eggs were found close to the Belgian coast and the coast of Brittany, which agrees with results of previous plankton surveys. In the second of the surveys, however, high densities were also found at stations about 50 km from the coast -in the open sea. An attempt is made to explain whether these early eggs were laid in the locality, contrary to what is normally accepted, or drifted there from the Belgian or the English coast.

Recruitment of meroplanktonic larvae in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Belgrano, A.; Vincx, M.; Dewarumez, J.-M.; Richard, A.; Craeymeersch, J.A.; Heip, C.H.R..
The density distribution of meroplanktonic larvae is compared with the density distribution of adults in the benthos, at five coastal stations in the Southern Bight of the North Sea (<i>Abra alba</i> community). Plankton communities were sampled during one tidal cycle, along a buoy traject or at a fixed point; southern and northern locations, 250 m from each central sampling point, have been investigated too. Benthos samples were taken only at the central points of this traject. Meroplankton consisted of polychaete larvae (9 families) and bivalve and echinoderm larvae. The highest density values of these larvae (6,400 ind.10.25 m2) are found on the southern sites of each traject (closest to the coastline). The highest...

Variability and productivity of meiobenthos in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vincx, M..
The composition and density of meiofauna in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea are essentially similar to those over large spatial scales. However, the impact of pollution from the Western Scheldt river is clearly reflected in a decrease in diversity on all taxonomic levels. Nematodes are the only animal group that survives in normal or even greater abundance, albeit it with lower diversity. Total meiofauna production is estimated at 1.5-2.0 g C m-2yr-1 and equals or even greatly exceeds macrofauna production in the area.

Mercury and organochlorines in four sperm whales stranded on the Belgian coast, November 1994 OMA
Joiris, C.R.; Holsbeek, L.; Bossicart, M.; Tapia, G..
Four sperm whales (three subadult males stranded on the Belgian coast, a fourth older male found dead at sea) were analysed for total mercury, methylmercury and organochlorines. All four were part of a total of 24 sperm whales that stranded on the North Sea coasts over a period of six months, a highly unusual phenomenon. Total mercury levels ranged from 0.5 µg/g fw in kidney and 1 in muscle, up to 15 in liver. The finding of at least 90% of the mercury in its inorganic form confirms the existence of detoxification mechanisms in the liver of cetaceans. PCB concentrations in muscle, liver, kidney and blubber ranged from 10 to 25 µg/g lipids. These results are in the same order of magnitude as literature data, which however does not imply that there is no...

Pathological investigations on sperm whales stranded on the Belgian and Dutch coasts OMA
Jauniaux, T.; Brosens, L.; Jacquinet, E.; Lambrigts, D.; Coignoul, F..
On November 18, 1994, four sperm whales were discovered dead on the Belgian coast, and on January 12, 1995, three live sperm whales stranded on the Dutch coast. Necropsies were conducted following a standardized procedure and samples were collected. Two Belgian sperm whales had a severe weight deficit and the Dutch sperm whales had reductions in blubber thickness. Agonal lesions such as visceral passive congestion and lung edema were due to the stranding. Significant lesions included acute ulcerations of the skin and acute to subacute ulcerative stomatitis. Severe diffuse subacute to chronic ulcerative external otitis was noted in four animals. Progressive weakness and/or potential alterations of echolocation might have predisposed these sperm whales to...

Observations ornithologiques réalisées dans le sud-est de la Mer du Nord, entre juin 1971 et janvier 1972: 2. Espèces non-marines OMA
Joiris, C..
During three pelagic cruises in the South-eastern part of the North Sea, the author spent a total of 82 hours (in 41 days) watching birds (Joiris, 1972). Sea bird watching involves only few birds, belonging to non-marine species. Nevertheless, it is a method which enables to point out periods of movement for given populations.

Mathematical model of the nitrogen cycle in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Pichot, G.; Runfola, Y..
The nitrogen cycle between dissolved inorganic and organic matter, phytoplankton, zooplankton, non living particulate organic matter, and sediments is studied in the ecosystem formed by the Southern Bight of the North Sea. A consistent pattern of mean annual fluxes of nitrogen based on the primary production and the zooplankton grazing is set up. A mathematical model describing the dynamic behaviour of nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and dissolved organic matter is proposed. The results of the simulation fairly well fit the recent observations made in the frame of the Math. Model Sea Research Programme.

Benthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea: general considerations OMA
Willems, K.A.; Vanosmael, C.; Claeys, D.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
The benthic fauna of the Kwinte Bank, a linear sandbank in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea, was sampled on ten stations in September 1978. This sandbank shows a linear gradient from fine sandy sediments in the south to coarser sandy sediments in the north as a result of the tidal current pattern in the region. The influence of this gradient on macro- and meiofauna was studied. Diversity of polychaetes and harpacticoid copepods is correlated with median grain size of the sand fraction, diversity of nematodes is not. The influence of station location and sediment characteristics on density of all major macrobenthic groups is very outspoken, and linear density trends are common. This is not true for meiofauna in general and nematodes and copepods...

Meiobenthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Willems, K.A.; Vincx, M.; Claeys, D.; Vanosmael, C.; Heip, C.H.R..
The meiofauna of a subtidal linear sandbank, the Kwinte Bank, in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea was analysed, with particular reference to the nematodes and harpacticoids. Nematodes are evenly spread over the whole sandbank but species differ. Diversity is very high (on average 3.8 bit /ind.) and 136 species were identified. Density on the contrary is low (on average 384 ind./10 cm²). Three species groups can be distinguished which are correlated with sediment characteristics. All trophic groups of nematodes are equally distributed within the sediment. Copepods are both more numerous and more diverse in the coarser sediments of the northern side of the sandbank. One cyclopoid and 65 harpacticoid species were identified with an average...

<i>Echinoderes higginsi</i> sp. n. (Kinorhyncha, Cyclorhagida) from the southern North Sea with a key to the genus <i>Echinoderes</i> Claparède OMA
Huys, R.; Coomans, A..
Echinoderes higginsi sp.n. is described from shallow subtidal sand north of the mouth of the Westerscheldt estuary, The Netherlands. The species is compared with other species having the same spine formulac. It appears to be most closely related to E. kristenseni Higgins. 1983 and, to a lesscr extent. to E. riedli Higgins, 1966. Condyldres multispinosus (McIntyre. 1962) is reported from the same locality, the first report of this centroderid kinorhynch since the original description. Some additional information on E. levunderi Karling, 1954 is presented. The presence of lateroventral adhesive tubes on the fourth segment, lateral spines on segment 7 and small additional setae on segment 12 in the male is noted. Echinoderes canariensis Greeff, 1869 and E....

<i>Boreopontia heipi</i> n.g., n.sp., an interstitial harpacticoid (Copepoda) from the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Willems, K.A..
During a comprehensive investigation of the meiofauna of the Kwinte Bank, a sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, several specimens were collected of an interstitial harpacticoid of the family Cylindropsyllidae, representing a new genus. These specimens, referred to as <i>Arenopontia</i> sp. A by Willems <i>et al</i>. (in press), occurred in two stations with a pure, very well sorted coarse sand. The physical characteristics were: a median grain size: 402-517 µm; sorting: 0.30-0.24 Ø; mud (<63 µm) content: 0.05-0 % ; gravel (>2000 µm) content: 1.13-0.24 %. The copepod association was dominated by <i>Interleptomesochra eulittoralis</i> Noodt, 1952). <i>Leptastacus laticaudatus intermedius</i>...

Macrobenthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Vanosmael, C.; Willems, K.A.; Claeys, D.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
The benthic fauna of a linear sandbank, the Kwinte Bank, in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea was sampled on ten stations in September 1978. Density and species composition of the macrofauna and sediment characteristics have been studied. The Kwinte Bank shows a gradient from finer sediments in the south to coarser sediments in the north, resulting from the tidal current pattern in the region, and can be considered as a biogeographical island as the bank is surrounded by a region of much finer sediments. The macrofauna consists of 73 identified species and has an average density of 4910 ind./m² and an average diversity of 2.5 bits/ind. Interstitial polychaetes predominate and among those <i>Hesionura augeneri</i> is the most abundant...

The diversity of nematode communities in the southern North Sea OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Decraemer, W..
The diversity of nematode communities along the Belgian coast is influenced by the median grain size and the percentage of silt of the sediment, as <i>H</i> = 0.84 +10. 96<i>Md</i> -0.013<i>S</i>. The influence of the outlet of a small stream, the IJzer, is also clearly visible in the low diversity of communities situated to the north-east of the mouth, which is the direction of the prevailing currents. The predominating species in low-diversity communities appear to be generalists, while high specialization seems to be the rule for nematode communities as a whole.

Effects of alkaline aluminate waste dumping on seawater chemistry OMA
Vandelannoote, R.; Van 't Dack, L.; Van Grieken, R..
The alkaline aluminate waste, of which 1000-2000 tonnes are dumped a few times a year off the Belgian coast in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, contains 5.4% NaCl, 1.8% dissolved Al and 7.4% NaOH, in addition to traces of heavy metals and some aniline- and phenol-derivatives. The pH rises locally to 8.5 and the total Al-concentration reaches 120 mg liter-1 (corresponding to an initial waste dilution factor of only 150) in the 10-m wide track just beyond the discharging barge, but these decay quickly to pH 8.1 and 1 mg liter-1 in the 30-m wide track, 500m behind the barge. The relation between the waste concentration and seawater pH was studied. The white precipitate that forms immediately in the sea was...
