Enzyme activity and reserve mobilization during Macaw palm ( Acrocomia aculeata ) seed germination Acta Botanica
Bicalho,Elisa Monteze; Motoike,Sérgio Yoshimitsu; Lima e Borges,Eduardo Euclydes de; Ataíde,Glauciana da Mata; Guimarães,Valéria Monteze.
ABSTRACT Reserve mobilization in seeds occurs after visible germination, which is marked by the protrusion of the radicle or cotyledonary petiole, as in species of Arecaceae. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm), usually produces hard seeds whose endosperm has mannan-rich cell walls. We investigated the composition of storage compounds in macaw palm seed and the roles of two enzymes (endo-β-mannanase, α-galactosidase) during and after germination. The seeds were firstly submitted to pre-established protocol to overcome dormancy and promote germination. Enzyme activity in both embryo and endosperm were assayed from the initiation of germinative activities until leaf sheath appearance, and the status of seed structures and reserve compounds were evaluated....

Nutritious tissue in petals of Annonaceae and its function in pollination by scarab beetles Acta Botanica
Gottsberger,Gerhard; Webber,Antonio Carlos.
ABSTRACT The feeding of pollinating dynastid-scarab beetles on nutritious tissue of Annonaceae flowers results in macroscopically visible gnawing marks on petals. In the present paper, we present and discuss examples of such gnawing marks on Annonaceae from the Cerrado and the Amazon Forest in Brazil. The localization of gnawing marks on the petals and the histochemistry of the nutritious tissues are emphasized. In some species, nutritious tissue is apparently distributed among all petals, while in other species it is more or less diffusely localized. There are also cases in which nutritious tissue occurs only on clearly localized regions of the inner petals. Petals of selected Amazon species were stained, and studied by light and scanning electron...

Taxonomic value of histochemical features of the style in early lineages of Asteraceae Acta Botanica
Hernández,Marcelo Paulo; Katinas,Liliana; Arambarri,Ana María.
In this paper we examine lipophilic substances, tannins, proteins, reducing carbohydrates, starch, and oxalate salts in early lineages of Asteraceae to test if they are a useful complement to classification studies. Styles of mature flowers of 44 species were processed according to plant histochemical techniques and observed by means of a light microscope. Lipophilic compounds were always present in the cuticle and cell walls, and in some species were located inside the cells. Proteins were located in the style cell walls and cell interior of most of the analyzed species. No tannins were found. In general, there is a correlation in the presence of reducing sugars and proteins. Starch granules and oxalate salts were found in the style parenchyma of a few...

Evaluation of Digestibility of Cooked Rice Grain using in vitro Digestion Technique CIGR Journal
Ogawa, Y..
Impact of postharvest and/or food processing (such as flour milling to agricultural and food-resource materials) on the digestibility of foodstuffs was investigated through a simulated gastro-intestinal in vitro digestion technique. The differences among the starch digestibilities of cooked rice grain and slurry were examined. In vitro digestion techniques are commonly applied to starch-based milled materials such as flours used for bread making. However, rice is not usually milled to flour but cooked as a whole for consumption. Therefore, maintaining an intact structure of cooked grain during in vitro digestion is very important to evaluate its starch digestibility. Two hundred grams of polished rice grain were cooked using electric rice cooker with 300...

Effects of chlorocholine chloride and paclobutrazol on cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz cv. Rocha) plant growth and tuberous root quality Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Medina,R.; Burgos,A.; Difranco,V.; Mroginski,L.; Cenóz,P..
The effects of chlorocholine chloride (CCC) and paclobutrazol (PBZ) foliar application on shoot and root parameters of cassava field-grown plants were studied (0, 45 and 90 mg active ingredient per plant). CCC and PBZ reduced total plant and first branch height, aerial fresh mass and tuberous root number. PBZ delayed branching and significantly decreased tuberous root fresh mass, while CCC caused no modifications in these parameters. In addition, CCC and PBZ treatments did not modify tuberous root diameter, while PBZ reduced tuberous root length significantly. Starch content was increased by both growth regulators at the lower dose, whereas dry matter content was increased only by CCC. In conclusion, CCC suppresses excessive vegetative growth, favours...

Physicochemical, functional, thermal and rheological characterization of starch from huauzontle seeds (Chenopodium berlandieri spp. nuttalliae) Agrociencia
Assad-Bustillos,Melissa; Ramírez-Gilly,Mariana; Tecante,Alberto; Chaires-Martínez,Leandro.
Huauzontle seeds (Chenopodium berlandieri spp. nuttalliae) are produced in the central part of Mexico but their use is limited to seedling process. Thus, in order to diversify their applications it is necessary to study their components such as proteins and starch. Therefore, the objective of this study was to extract and characterize the starch contained in the seeds of huauzontle by means of chemical and physical techniques. Analysis of the results showed 50 % extraction yield, 72.5 % starch purity, 5.32 % moisture, 1.09 % ash, 0.083 % fat, 11.4 % total nitrogen, and 4.13 % crude fiber. The amylose content was 10.5 %, which suggests that huauzontle starch gels could have a low tendency to retrograde. Swelling and solubility were similar to reported...

Glycemic index: effect of food storage under low temperature BABT
Carreira,Marina Cassab; Lajolo,Franco Maria; Menezes,Elizabete Wenzel de.
This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of food storage under low temperature (-20ºC) and the resistant starch formation, both on the glycemic index (GI). The GI of only cooked and cooked and stored foods under -20ºC for 30 days was evaluated in short-term tests with humans. Significant increase on the RS content was evidenced for all the stored foods. The food storage resulted in a significant decrease on the GI of beans and chick-peas; the GI of pasta remained the same and the GI of corn meal increased. Thus, the RS formation showed reduced influence on the glycemic index. The storage of starchy foods under low temperature can collaborate to the RS intake but its effect on the GI will depend on the characteristics of the carbohydrates of...

Starch levels in refrigerated and frozen chicken based meat products BABT
Labanca,Renata A.; Silva,Cristiane M. G.; Glória,M. Beatriz A..
The levels of starch were determined in chicken based meat products commercialized in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, from December 1996 to March 1997. Samples were analyzed for moisture and starch contents. Starch was acid hydrolyzed and the resulting glucose was determined at 620 nm after reaction with anthrone. The method was observed to be accurate (92.7% recovery), precise (CV = 3.0%), sensitive (quantification limit = 1.25 g/100 g) and simple in the determination of starch in meat products. Among products analyzed, starch was detected in 100% of meat balls and nuggets samples, in 60% of the sausage, 50% of the bologna and 30% of the frankfurter. Starch was not detected in hamburger samples analyzed. Higher mean starch levels were found in nuggets (14.85...

Franco,Célia Maria Landi; Ogawa,Cristina; Rabachini,Taís; Rocha,Thais de Souza; Cereda,Marney Pascoli; Jane,Jay-lin.
In this work, the effect of lactic acid and UV irradiation on the physicochemical and structural characteristics of cassava and corn starches was evaluated. Only the modified cassava starch presented baking expansion capacity. From RVA, reduction of viscosity values, greater internal stability and none set back for modified cassava starch were observed. Modified corn starch did not show any peak viscosity. There were no significant differences in DSC thermal properties of treated and native starches. Amylopectin and amylose molecules from both the modified starches displayed some degradation. Molecular weight of cassava amylopectin was mostly preserved, whereas corn amylopectin was evenly attacked through the granule. Nevertheless, the B long branched...
