ABSTRACT Reserve mobilization in seeds occurs after visible germination, which is marked by the protrusion of the radicle or cotyledonary petiole, as in species of Arecaceae. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm), usually produces hard seeds whose endosperm has mannan-rich cell walls. We investigated the composition of storage compounds in macaw palm seed and the roles of two enzymes (endo-β-mannanase, α-galactosidase) during and after germination. The seeds were firstly submitted to pre-established protocol to overcome dormancy and promote germination. Enzyme activity in both embryo and endosperm were assayed from the initiation of germinative activities until leaf sheath appearance, and the status of seed structures and reserve compounds were evaluated.... |

In this paper we examine lipophilic substances, tannins, proteins, reducing carbohydrates, starch, and oxalate salts in early lineages of Asteraceae to test if they are a useful complement to classification studies. Styles of mature flowers of 44 species were processed according to plant histochemical techniques and observed by means of a light microscope. Lipophilic compounds were always present in the cuticle and cell walls, and in some species were located inside the cells. Proteins were located in the style cell walls and cell interior of most of the analyzed species. No tannins were found. In general, there is a correlation in the presence of reducing sugars and proteins. Starch granules and oxalate salts were found in the style parenchyma of a few... |

It was studied the effects of inclusion of cassava in substitution of corn on nutrient digestibility and ingestive behavior of dairy goats of Saanen breed fed diets based on cane sugar. It was used five lactating goats with average production of 2 kg of milk per day allotted to 5 x 5 Latin square design with five levels of inclusion of cassava (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%) replacing corn. The apparent digestibility of DM, CP, OM, TC was not affected by the replacement levels of ground corn for cassava. The apparent digestibility of the NDF fraction decreased linearly with the increase of cassava in diets. The apparent digestibility of NFC increased linearly with the increase of cassava in the diets. Feed behavior in all studied variables did not influence the... |

Impact of postharvest and/or food processing (such as flour milling to agricultural and food-resource materials) on the digestibility of foodstuffs was investigated through a simulated gastro-intestinal in vitro digestion technique. The differences among the starch digestibilities of cooked rice grain and slurry were examined. In vitro digestion techniques are commonly applied to starch-based milled materials such as flours used for bread making. However, rice is not usually milled to flour but cooked as a whole for consumption. Therefore, maintaining an intact structure of cooked grain during in vitro digestion is very important to evaluate its starch digestibility. Two hundred grams of polished rice grain were cooked using electric rice cooker with 300... |

The effects of chlorocholine chloride (CCC) and paclobutrazol (PBZ) foliar application on shoot and root parameters of cassava field-grown plants were studied (0, 45 and 90 mg active ingredient per plant). CCC and PBZ reduced total plant and first branch height, aerial fresh mass and tuberous root number. PBZ delayed branching and significantly decreased tuberous root fresh mass, while CCC caused no modifications in these parameters. In addition, CCC and PBZ treatments did not modify tuberous root diameter, while PBZ reduced tuberous root length significantly. Starch content was increased by both growth regulators at the lower dose, whereas dry matter content was increased only by CCC. In conclusion, CCC suppresses excessive vegetative growth, favours... |

Huauzontle seeds (Chenopodium berlandieri spp. nuttalliae) are produced in the central part of Mexico but their use is limited to seedling process. Thus, in order to diversify their applications it is necessary to study their components such as proteins and starch. Therefore, the objective of this study was to extract and characterize the starch contained in the seeds of huauzontle by means of chemical and physical techniques. Analysis of the results showed 50 % extraction yield, 72.5 % starch purity, 5.32 % moisture, 1.09 % ash, 0.083 % fat, 11.4 % total nitrogen, and 4.13 % crude fiber. The amylose content was 10.5 %, which suggests that huauzontle starch gels could have a low tendency to retrograde. Swelling and solubility were similar to reported... |

Five Holstein cows were distributed in a 5x5 latin square design to assess the effect of replacement levels of dry ground corn grain (DGCG) by high moisture corn silage (HMCS) on intake, total nutrient digestibility and plasma glucose, according to the following treatments: 1) 100% DGCG; 2) 75% DGCG and 25% HMCS; 3) 50% DGCG and 50% HMCS; 4) 25% DGCG and 75% HMCS; 5) 100% HMCS. The experiment lasted 70 days, divided into five phases of 14 days each. The digestibility was obtained using chromic oxide (Cr2O3) as the indicator. Fecal samples were collected twice daily and blood samples were collected on the last day of each period before the first meal (0h) and 2h, 4h, 6h and 12h after the meal. There was no effect (P>0.05) on the intake of dry matter... |

This work has the objective of characterizing twenty corn landraces grown in the Campos Gerais region (Paraná State) in relation to its chemical composition (moisture, ash, protein, ether extract, dietary fiber and starch) and physical properties (weight of 1000 grains, real density, flotation index, granulometry and color). In addition, also the lab scale processing of the kernels from the varieties was carried out for producing starch; starch purity was evaluated by measuring its protein contamination. Amylose contents and viscoamylograph profile were also evaluated. The results showed that the evaluated landraces have differences in chemical composition as well as in pericarp/endosperm/germ proportions and consequently it should have different... |

Two commercial varieties of Peruvian carrot ('Amarela de Carandaí' and 'Senador Amaral') were processed into flour, starch and bagasse and chemically evaluated. The starch was extracted, modified with H2O2 and characterized by the physicochemical methods. By using the methylene blue dyeing, the granules of the modified starches showed intense blue color. The carboxyl content, the reducing power and the amount of the water liberated from the pastes after the freeze-thawing were higher for the oxidized starches and their pastes were clearer than those of the native starches of the two varieties from the two production areas. The RVA viscoamylography showed that the modified starches had lower viscosities with differences between the varieties. In the thermal... |

The levels of starch were determined in chicken based meat products commercialized in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, from December 1996 to March 1997. Samples were analyzed for moisture and starch contents. Starch was acid hydrolyzed and the resulting glucose was determined at 620 nm after reaction with anthrone. The method was observed to be accurate (92.7% recovery), precise (CV = 3.0%), sensitive (quantification limit = 1.25 g/100 g) and simple in the determination of starch in meat products. Among products analyzed, starch was detected in 100% of meat balls and nuggets samples, in 60% of the sausage, 50% of the bologna and 30% of the frankfurter. Starch was not detected in hamburger samples analyzed. Higher mean starch levels were found in nuggets (14.85... |

In this work, the effect of lactic acid and UV irradiation on the physicochemical and structural characteristics of cassava and corn starches was evaluated. Only the modified cassava starch presented baking expansion capacity. From RVA, reduction of viscosity values, greater internal stability and none set back for modified cassava starch were observed. Modified corn starch did not show any peak viscosity. There were no significant differences in DSC thermal properties of treated and native starches. Amylopectin and amylose molecules from both the modified starches displayed some degradation. Molecular weight of cassava amylopectin was mostly preserved, whereas corn amylopectin was evenly attacked through the granule. Nevertheless, the B long branched... |

Twenty-four Holstein steer calves (88 ± 3kg) with abomasal catheters were randomly assigned within blocks to one of four treatments. The treatments consisted of four abomasal infusions: water (control), 4 g/kg BW.d-1 of partially hydrolyzed starch (SH), 0.6 g/kg BW.d-1 of casein, and a mix of SH + casein. The small intestine was collected and five equidistan, 1m sites were identified (duodenum, jejunum 1, jejunum 2 jejunum 3 and ileum). Maltase specific activity in mucosal homogenate and brush border membrane vesicles, SGLT1 protein abundance, and sodium-dependent glucose uptake in brush border membrane vesicles did not differ between the calves receiving different abomasal infusion treatments. However, maltase specific activity in homogenates and brush... |

Considering the importance of water content for the conservation and storage of seeds, and the involvement of soluble carbohydrates and lipids for embryo development, a comparative study was carried out among the seeds of Inga vera (ingá), Eugenia uniflora (pitanga), both classified as recalcitrant, and Caesalpinia echinata (brazilwood) and Erythrina speciosa (mulungu), considered as orthodox seeds. Low concentrations of cyclitols (0.3-0.5%), raffinose family oligosaccharides (ca. 0.05%) and unsaturated fatty acids (0-19%) were found in the seeds of ingá and pitanga, while larger amounts of cyclitols (2-3%) and raffinose (4.6-13%) were found in brazilwood and mulungu, respectively. These results, in addition to higher proportions of unsaturated fatty acids... |
