Chemical composition of phytoplankton from the estuaries of Eastern Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Vilhena,Maria do Perpetuo Socorro Progene; Costa,Marcondes Lima da; Berrêdo,José Francisco; Paiva,Rosildo Santos; Almeida,Pryscila Denise.
Phytoplankton is important bioindicator of chemical and biological modifications of natural ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine the total chemical composition of the phytoplankton of the Pará and Mocajuba estuaries on the eastern coast of the Amazon region in the Brazilian state of Pará. The chemical composition of the surface water, bottom sediments (total sample and bioavailable fraction), and the phytoplankton were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Phytoplankton contained high concentrations of Ca, P, Mn, Fe, Zn, Al, Ba, and Pb. The phytoplankton of the Mocajuba estuary is rich in Fe (2,967-84,750 µg g-1), while those from the Pará is rich in Al (1,216-15,389 µgg-1), probably reflecting...

Trace metals and PAHs in topsoils of the University campus in the megacity of São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BOUROTTE,CHRISTINE L.M.; SUGAUARA,LUCY E.; MARCHI,MARY R.R. DE; SOUTO-OLIVEIRA,CARLOS E..
Abstract: The aim of this study is to discuss the concentration distribution, composition and possible sources of trace metals and 13 PAHs in topsoils of the University campus, in the city of São Paulo, the largest city of South America. Mineralogy and granulometry of topsoils (0-10 cm) samples, were determined and As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, Zn, Hg, Pt, Pd and PAHs concentrations were quantified in the bulk fraction. The average clay content of soils was 221±61.8 g kg-1 and total carbon was low (mean of 25 g kg-1). Concentrations of metals were generally lower than the reference value established by the São Paulo State Environmental Agency and other studies in the São Paulo urban area, except for Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr and Zn. The mean...

Evaluation of trace metals (cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc) in tissues of a commercially important fish (Leporinus obtusidens) from Guaíba Lake, Southern Brazil BABT
Costa,Silene de Carvalho; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn were determined in liver and muscle of Leporinus obtusidens. During 2003, the fishes (N = 54) were sampled from three sites along Guaíba Lake (north, central and south zones). The hypotheses tested assumed that there were differences in the location and date as to levels of contamination, association between the trace metal content in the fishes and size, and that the sex influenced metal accumulation. Possible risks of contaminated fish consumption to human health were also evaluated. The level of mean concentration (µg/g) of metals in tissues was higher in liver than muscle: [Cd] = 2.32♂; [Cr] = 0.08♀; [Cu] = 30.82♀ and [Zn] = 97.77♀. The results showed differences between the local and date sampling for all metals...

Effect of local hydroclimate on phytoplankton groups in the Charente estuary ArchiMer
Guesdon, Stephane; Stachowski-haberkorn, Sabine; Lambert, Christophe; Beker, Beatriz; Brach-papa, Christophe; Auger, Dominique; Bechemin, Christian.
This study aimed to describe seasonal variations of phytoplankton abundances in relation to the physical and chemical (nutrients and metals) environment under the influence of freshwater input in the Charente river estuary (Marennes-Oléron bay, France) over three years, from 2011 to 2014. Phytoplankton abundances were determined using microscopy and flow cytometry. Considering high frequency temperature and salinity data, breakpoints in each series led to the identification of two local hydroclimatic periods: the first (2011 and early 2012) being warmer and higher in salinity than the second (from spring 2012 to the beginning of 2014). A multiblock PLS analysis highlighted the significant contribution of the physical environment (temperature, salinity and...

Biological availability of sediment-bound trace metals. ArchiMer
Luoma, S.
It has been established that direct uptake of (at least some) trace metals from sediments contributes to metal concentrations in benthic organisms. Important controls on metal uptake from sediment are the concentration of the exposure, the partitioning of the metals among components of the sediment, and the redox potential of the sediment. Important problems in ecology, physiology, geochemistry and biogeochemistry remain unresolved, however, and a concentrated interdisciplinary research effort will be necessary before a complete understanding of the fate and impact of sediment-bound metals will be possible.

Utilisation de Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile comme bio-indicateur de la contamination métallique ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline.
The coastal zone of the continental shelf contains a high ecological richness. However, this zone is very fragile towards xenobiotics ; the pollution of this environment can be damaging to the structure of the biocenoses and to the productivity of the ecosystems. Metals, contrarily to numerous contaminants, are normal constituents of the environment at a trace level, but are all toxic above a certain threshold. At the end of the 1970s, several researchers proposed the use of organisms to evaluate the quality of the marine environment ; it is in this context that the bio-indicator concept arises. The seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, endemic of the Mediterranean Sea, has been the subject of several works proposing to use this species to determine the...

Etude du comportement des éléments traces en milieu estuarien : approche expérimentale et modélisation : Application à l'étude de la spéciation de Cd, Co et Cs dans les estuaires majeurs français (Seine, Loire, Gironde, Rhône) ArchiMer
Dange, Catherine.
Most of trace elements have a non conservative behavior in estuarine environments. It is the case of cadmium, cobalt and caesium for which the fate in estuarine and coastal zones is largely controlled by their distribution between water and suspended particles, which generally have high residence times or can be definitely deposited in these areas. Metallic contaminants and radionuclides can be present under various species : dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated) or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. Such distributions are the result of processes (physical, chemical, biological) which are controlled by many factors (ionic strengh, pH, Eh, major cations concentration, nature and...

The distribution of radionuclides and some trace metals in the water columns of the Japan and Bonin trenches ArchiMer
Nozaki, Y; Yamada, M; Nakanishi, T; Nagaya, Y; Nakamura, K; Shitashima, K; Tsubota, H.
Presented here is the first detailed geochemical data set on the U/Th series Th, Pa, Ac, and Pb isotopes and artificial fallout radionuclides (Sr-90, Cs-137, and Pu isotopes), and some trace elements (V, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Ni) in two water columns of the Japan and Bonin trenches down to the bottom depths of 7585 m and 9750 m, respectively. Hydrographic properties such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient content within the trench valley remain constant at the same levels as those in the bottom water of the Northwest Pacific basin (typically similar to 6000 m in depth). The radionuclide activities and most trace metal concentrations are also not very different from those in the overlying water at depths of around 5000-6000 m. This means...

Intercomparison of dissolved iron isotope profiles from re-occupation of three GEOTRACES stations in the Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Conway, T. M.; John, S. G.; Lacan, F..
Intercomparison of trace metal data is a key aspect of the International GEOTRACES program, allowing data from multiple laboratories and countries to be combined to produce high-resolution datasets for the oceans. The use of crossover stations by the GEOTRACES program provides the opportunity both for comparison of analytical techniques and assessment of temporal variability in the cycling of trace metals such as iron (Fe). Here, we present the first comparison of dissolved Fe stable isotope ratio (δ56Fe; relative to IRMM-014) profiles in the oceans, from re-occupations of three locations in the Atlantic Ocean; (1) the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series Station (31.75°N 64.17°W) during the U.S. GEOTRACES IC1 cruise (June 2008) and the U.S. GEOTRACES GA03 cruise...

Assessment of contaminant concentrations in sediments, fish and mussels sampled from the North Atlantic and European regional seas within the ICON project ArchiMer
Robinson, Craig D.; Webster, Lynda; Martinez-gomez, Concepcion; Burgeot, Thierry; Gubbins, Matthew J.; Thain, John E.; Vethaak, A. Dick; Mcintosh, Alistair D.; Hylland, Ketil.
Understanding the status of contaminants in the marine environment is a requirement of European Union Directives and the Regional Seas Conventions, so that measures to reduce pollution can be identified and their efficacy assessed. The international ICON workshop (Hylland et al., in this issue) was developed in order to test an integrated approach to assessing both contaminant concentrations and their effects. This paper describes and assesses the concentrations of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments, mussels, and fish collected from estuarine, coastal and offshore waters from Iceland to the Mediterranean Sea. For organic contaminants, concentrations progressively increased from Iceland, to the...

Vertical export flux of metals in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Migon, Christophe; Losno, Rémi; Miquel, Juan-carlos; Thibodeau, Benoit; Stabholz, Marion; Dufour, Aurelie; Leblond, Nathalie.
We examined metal (Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) and particulate organic carbon (OC) concentrations of the marine vertical export flux at the DYFAMED time-series station in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. We present here the first data set of natural and anthropogenic metals from sediment trap moorings deployed at 1000 m-depth between 2003 and 2007 at the DYFAMED site. A highly significant correlation was observed between most metal concentrations, whatever the nature and emission source of the metal. Cu, Zn and Cd exhibit different behaviors, presumably due to their very high solubility and complexation with organic ligands. The observed difference of atmospheric and marine fluxes in terms of temporal variability and elemental...

Organic and inorganic human-induced contamination of Posidonia oceanica meadows ArchiMer
Pergent, Gerard; Labbe, Celine; Lafabrie, Celine; Kantin, Roger; Pergent-martini, Christine.
In coastal environments, plants are used for phytoremediation of contamination. Organic and inorganic contaminants may be due to natural and/or anthropogenic sources. The aim of this study is to compare inorganic (trace metal) and organic (PAH) contamination in Posidonia oceanica and to analyse the relationship between these types of pollutants indeed very few studies have been interested in their correlations and common sources. P. oceanica leaves were collected in two sites exhibiting different levels of human-induced pressure. Higher values were recorded in the more polluted site (Toulon) for trace metals (Ag, Hg, Pb) as well as for PAHs (Medium Molecular Weight and High Molecular Weight) due to the presence of the city and/or harbour in proximity. Modélisation des contaminants en milieu aquatique: Module MET&OR ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte.
The MET&OR module is a model, written in FORTRAN 90, which calculates the biogeochemical reactions between variables such as trace metal, radioactive tracers, organic or bacterial contaminants (biodegradation, decay, adsorption / desorption, photolysis, hydrolysis, volatilization, partition at equilibrium ..). It groups together classical reactions, described in the literature, to evaluate the source and sink terms which are integrated into the transport equations solved by a hydrodynamic model. It is intended more particularly for marine and coastal waters. This technical documentation aims to present the MET&OR module and the way in which it was coupled to the hydrodynamic model, in particular to MARS-3D.

Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere occur at the air-sea interface through the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particulate matter, and through the impact of the upper-ocean biology on the composition and radiative properties of this boundary layer. The Tara Pacific expedition, launched in May 2016 aboard the schooner Tara, was a 29-month exploration with the dual goals to study the ecology of reef ecosystems along ecological gradients in the Pacific Ocean and to assess inter-island and open ocean surface plankton and neuston community structures. In addition, key atmospheric properties were measured to study links between the two boundary layer properties. A major challenge for the open ocean sampling was the lack of ship-time available...

Modélisation de la bioaccumulation de métaux traces (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu et Zn) chez la moule, Mytilus galloprovincialis, en milieu méditerranéen ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio.
Monitoring coastal contamination of trace metals using bivalve molluscs as quantitative bioindicators is widely used in many international monitoring programs. The bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from the interaction between physiological (growth, loss of weight, absorption, accumulation), chemical (metal concentration, speciation, bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature, SPM, chlorophyll). By utilizing the parameters above in this study, it appears that modeling metal dynamics in marine mussels is a reliable tool. The model allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. One of the objective of this study was to couple a...
