Leaf micronutrient concentrations and potential photosynthesis in Ochroma pyramidale established in a degraded land 36
MARENCO,Ricardo A.; VIEIRA,Gil; GONÇALVES,José F. de C..
In the Brazilian Amazon, large areas of abandoned lands may revert to secondary forest. In the process, pioneer tree species have an important role to restore productivity in old fields and improve environmental conditions. To determine potential photosynthesis (Apot), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration (E), and leaf micronutrient concentrations in Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urban a study was carried out in the Brazilian Amazon (01o 51' S; 60o 04' W). Photosynthetic parameters were measured at increasing [CO2], saturating light intensity (1 mmol (photons) m-2 s-1), and ambient temperature. The rate of electron-transport (J), Apot, and water-use efficiency (WUE) increased consistently at increasing internal CO2 concentration (Ci). Conversely,...

Water osmotic absorption in Coleus blumei plants under salinity stress 52
Sena,José Ozinaldo Alves de; Zaidan,Humberto Actis; Castro,Paulo Roberto de Camargo e.
Three month old Coleus blumei plants in pots were treated with different NaCl concentrations: 0.00, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00%. To determine the water osmotic absorption, the plants had their stems cut at 10 cm from the soil surface. The remaining stems were linked to glass tubes by flexible rubber tubes. Readings of the water column level in the glass tubes were performed at each 30 minutes, corresponding to the water osmotic absorption, with a total of eleven readings. Other Coleus blumei, with the same age, received the NaCl concentrations, and were evaluated under field conditions in terms of transpiration and stomatal resistance. A randomized complete block analysis was used with five replications. An increase of osmotic absorption was verified for all...

Intensity of bitterness of processed yerba mate leaves originated in two contrasted light environments 52
Rakocevic,Miroslava; Medrado,Moacir José Sales; Lucambio,Fernando; Valduga,Alice Teresa.
The bitterness intensity of beverage prepared from the leaves produced on the males and females of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), grown in the forest understory and monoculture, was evaluated. The leaves were grouped by their position (in the crown and on the branch tips) and by the leaf age. The leaf gas exchange, leaf temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density were observed. Inter and intra-specific competition for light and self-shading showed the same effect on yerba mate beverage taste. All the shading types resulted in bitterer taste of the processed yerba mate leaves compared to the leaves originated under the direct sun exposure. The leaves from the plants grown in the monoculture showed less bitterness than those grown in the forest...

Water relations and hydraulic architecture in Cerrado trees: adjustments to seasonal changes in water availability and evaporative demand 61
Bucci,Sandra J.; Scholz,Fabian G.; Goldstein,Guillermo; Meinzer,Frederick C.; Franco,Augusto C.; Zhang,Yongjiang; Hao,Guang-You.
We determined adjustments in physiology and morphology that allow Neotropical savanna trees from central Brazil (Cerrado) to avoid water deficits and to maintain a nearly constant internal water balance despite seasonal changes in precipitation and air saturation deficit (D). Precipitation in the study area is highly seasonal with about five nearly rainless months during which D is two fold higher compared to wet season values. As a consequence of the seasonal fluctuations in rainfall and D, soil water potential changes substantially in the upper 100 cm of soil, but remains nearly constant below 2 m depth. Hydraulic architecture and water relations traits of Cerrado trees adjusted during the dry season to prevent increasing water deficits and insure...

Stomatal changes induced by intermittent drought in four umbu tree genotypes 61
Silva,Elizamar C.; Nogueira,Rejane J. M. C.; Vale,Fernando H. A.; Araújo,Francisco P. de; Pimenta,Mariana A..
Transpiration (E), diffusive resistance (r s) and anatomical parameters were measured in plants of four grafted umbu tree genotypes (GBUs 44, 48, 50 and 68) in order to evaluate alterations induced by intermittent drought and possible genotypic variations. Transpiration measurements were taken daily until stomatal closure by withholding water. Measurements were also taken, when the plants were re-watered and the watering was interrupted again. This cycle was repeated for a period of 31 days (stress period). The control plants were also irrigated daily. A regular pattern in the stomatal opening/closing mechanism was observed throughout the watering period, exhibiting intra-specific differences. Stomatal behavior of GBU 44 and GBU 68 were influenced by air...

Analysis of Hydraulic Conductance Components in Field Grown, Mature Sweet Cherry Trees 117
Oyarzún,Ricardo; Stöckle,Claudio; Whiting,Matthew.
As a necessary step towards understanding soil water extraction and plant water relationships, the components of hydraulic conductance (K) of mature sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) trees were evaluated in situ based on a Ohm´s law analog method. In June 2004, K was determined for 10-yr-old ‘Bing’/‘Gisela® 5’ trees, from simultaneous measurements of whole canopy gas exchange and leaf (sunlit and shaded) and stem water potentials (Ψ). Leaf water potential of sunlit leaves was lower than shaded leaves, reaching minimum values of ca. -2.3 MPa around 14:00 h (solar time). Average total hydraulic conductance was 60 ± 6 mmol s-1 MPa-1, presenting a slight decreasing trend as the season progressed. The analysis of tree K components showed that it was...

Morpho-physiological changes in pineapple plantlets [Ananas comosus (L.) merr.] during acclimatization 64
Villalobo,Ariel; González,Justo; Santos,Ramón; Rodríguez,Romelio.
Pineapple producing countries lack good quality propagation material to expand cultivars into new areas. Previously, research protocols may increase the offer of high quality plantlets and speed the introduction of new pineapple cultivars. The present work is to evaluate the morpho-physiological changes in plantlets of pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. 'MD-2'] during the acclimatization phase. Plantlets were acclimatized under 80% relative humidity, 25.5 °C temperature and photosynthetic photon flux of 400-500 µmol m-2 s-1 as average for 45 d under natural photoperiods. All measurements (plant length, number of leaves and roots, fresh weight, width and length of leaf 'D', net photosynthesis and total transpiration rate) were carried out at the end of in...

Conversions of natural ecosystems, e.g., from rain forests to managed plantations, result in significant changes in the hydrological cycle including periodic water scarcity. In Indonesia, large areas of forest were lost and extensive oil palm plantations were established over the last decades. We conducted a combined social and environmental study in a region of recent land-use change, the Jambi Province on Sumatra. The objective was to derive complementary lines of arguments to provide balanced insights into environmental perceptions and eco-hydrological processes accompanying land-use change. Interviews with villagers highlighted concerns regarding decreasing water levels in wells during dry periods and increasing fluctuations in stream flow between...

SUNLIT AND SHADED MAIZE CANOPY WATER LOSS UNDER VARIED WATER STRESS 91
Santos,Antonio Odair; Bergamaschi,Homero; Fuchs,Marcel; Rosa,Luís Mauro G.; Bergonci,João Ito.
ABSTRACT The precise estimation of transpiration from plant canopies is important for the monitoring of crop water use and management of many agricultural operations related to water use planning. The aim of this study was to estimate transpiration from sunlit and shaded fractions of a maize ( Zea mays L.) canopy, using the Penman-Monteith energy balance equation with modifications introduced by Fuchs et al. (1987) and Fuchs & Cohen (1989). Estimated values were validated by a heat pulse system, which was used to measure stem sap flow and by a weighing lysimeter. A relationship between incident radiation and leaf stomatal conductance for critical levels of leaf water potential was used to estimate transpiration. Results showed that computed...

African Mahogany transpiration with Granier method and water table lysimeter 91
Sérvulo,Ana C. O.; Vellame,Lucas M.; Casaroli,Derblai; Alves Júnior,José; Souza,Pedro H. de.
ABSTRACT The thermal dissipation probe (Granier method) is useful in the water deficit monitoring and irrigation management of African Mahogany, but its model needs proper adjustment. This paper aimed to adjust and validate the Granier sap flux model to estimate African Mahogany transpiration, measure transpiration using lysimeter and relate it to atmospheric water demand. Weather conditions, transpiration and sap flux were monitored in three units of 2.5-year-old African Mahogany trees in constant water table lysimeter, in Goiânia, GO. Sapwood area (SA), leaf area (LA), transpiration measured by lysimeter (TLYS) and estimated by sap flux (TSF) were evaluated. The SA comprised 55.24% of the trunk’s transversal section. The LA varied from 11.95 to 10.66 m2....

ASSESSMENT OF CORN WATER UPTAKE BASED ON SAP HEAT TRACING UNDER WATER-STRESSED CONDITIONS 91
Santos,Antonio Odair; Bergamaschi,Homero; Rosa,Luís M. G.; Bergonci,João I.; Radin,Bernadete.
ABSTRACT Crop water monitoring is an important aspect for precise control of irrigation. A reliable and movable technique is needed to properly assess water uptake of crops in the field. Water uptake by field grown maize ( Zea mays L.), in water-limited conditions was verified with the heat pulse system. The temperature difference between two radially inserted thermocouples, one 9 mm above and the other 4 mm below a heater piercing the maize stem, was measured every 0.3 sec following emission of a heat pulse in conditions of varied atmospheric demand. Comparisons of heat pulse system outputs and a high precision transpiration model estimates were done on hourly and daily basis, when low sap velocities were expected to occur. Hourly and daily basis of the...
