Evaluation of the acerola juice concentrated by reverse osmosis BABT
Gomes,Eliane Rodrigues dos Santos; Mendes,Elisabete Scolin; Pereira,Nehemias Curvelo; Barros,Sueli Teresa Davantel de.
The aim of this study was to obtain the acerola juice using separation processes with membranes. The acerola pulp was initially defrosted and treated with 100 ppm of Citrozym Ultra L enzyme at 45ºC for one hour, then ultrafiltrated at 3 bar at 45ºC using 0.1 µm ceramic membrane, and concentrated by reverse osmosis using a spiral membrane of a compound film. The pressures on the reverse osmosis were 20, 30, and 40 bar at environmental temperature, thus, resulting a juice with 9.76, 14.56, and 17.36 ºBrix, respectively. The physicochemical characteristics of the juice were preserved and, studies on evaluation of the public acceptability, showed that 75% of the consumers liked the juice.

Koga,Luciana Numata; Fenelon,Vanderson Carvalho; Miyoshi,Juliana Harumi; Moriwaki,Cristiane; Wessel,Kamila Byanca Baldin; Mangolim,Camila Sampaio; Matioli,Graciette.
A repetitive batch process was employed followed by membrane ultrafiltration system to produce low-cost cyclodextrins (CDs) using commercial enzymes Toruzyme® cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) and its kinetic parameters were determined. The ultrafiltration system enabled the removalof inhibitory products from the reaction medium, allowing the enzyme to be recovered for reuse. A 10 kDa membrane was used to separate the different CDs produced by the CGTase. The substrates evaluated were maltodextrin, corn starch and cassava starch at 5, 10 and 15% (w/V), in the presence and absence of 10% (V/V) ethanol. After reaction for 132 h, 10% (w/V) cassava starch in the presence of ethanol provided the best results with 32.1 mg/mL of β-CD. Maximum...

A new methodology for polyvalent intravenous immunoglobulin solution production with a two-stage process of viral inactivation BJPS
Lucena,Antônio Edson de Souza; Sampaio,Divaldo de Almeida; Silva,Ednaldo Rosas da; Paiva,Virgínia Florêncio de; Santiago,Ana Cláudia; Leite,Ana Cristina Lima.
Highly purified intravenous immunoglobulin G concentrate (IV IgG) was produced with the use of polyethylene glycol associated to a single-stage precipitation by ethanol, instead of the classic Cohn-Oncley process, which employs cold alcohol as the precipitating agent, in a three-stage process. Precipitation of crude fraction containing more than 95% of immunoglobulin G was performed by liquid chromatography with a cation exchanger, CM-Sepharose, as a stationary phase. During the process, the product was subjected to two-stage viral inactivation. The first stage was performed by the action of sodium caprylate, 30 mM at pH 5.1+/- 0.1, and the second stage was performed by the action of a solvent-detergent mixture. The finished product was formulated at 5%...

Abstract The proteins recovered by ultrafiltration (UF) represent a co-product of fish industrialization and can be used as a protein ingredient in the fortification of food formulations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of surimi fishburger elaborated with the proteins recovered by UF from the wastewater generated in the production of surimi. The water generated in the washing operations of trims of farmed tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were filtered in a 30 kDa polyethersulfone membrane. The recovered proteins were dehydrated in spray dryer and added at 5 and 10% into fishburgers made with tilapia surimi. The fishburgers were evaluated for proximal composition, cooking yield, sensory parameters and acceptability. The incorporation...

Analysis of fouling and juice quality in crossflow ultrafiltration of watermelon juice Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
BHATTACHARJEE,Chiranjit; SAXENA,Vinod Kumar; DUTTA,Suman.
Abstract Raw watermelon juice was clarified in a laboratory scale flat plate ultrafiltration system incorporating polyethersulphone membranes with a molecular weight cut-off of 50 kDa. The experiments have been carried out over a wide range of trans-membrane pressures (1-3 bar). The effect of ultrafiltration with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 50 kDa PES membrane on permeate properties is reported. The effects of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) on permeate flux and resistances were studied. The flux decay was analyzed through the resistance in series model which showed increase of both reversible and irreversible resistance with trans-membrane pressure, The TSS content of the permeate was found to be almost the same with feed while the ascorbic acid...

ABSTRACT: This paper aim to evaluate the ultrafiltration (UF) process for constituents recovery from whey. Sequences of factorial designs were performed by varying temperature (5 to 40°C) and pressure (1 to 3 bar), to maximize the proteins concentration using membrane of 100kDa in dead end system. Based on the best result new experiments were performed with membrane of 50kDa and 10kDa. With the membrane of 50 the protein retention was about 3 times higher than the membrane of 100kDa. The concentrated obtained by UF membrane of 10kDa, 10°C and 2 bar in laboratory scale showed a mean protein retention of 80 %, greater protein solubility, emulsion stability and the identification of β-lactoglobulins (18.3 kDa) and α-lactalbumin fractions (14.2kDa). Therefore,...

Optimization of Air Backwash Frequency during the Ultrafiltration of Seawater ArchiMer
Cordier, C; Eljaddi, Tarik; Ibouroihim, Nadjim; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
The main objective of this paper is to study the effect of new air backwash on dead-end ultrafiltration of seawater with a pilot at semi-industrial scale (20 m3/day). To control membrane fouling, two different backwashes were used to clean the membrane: classical backwash (CB) and new air backwash (AB) that consists of injecting air into the membrane module before a classical backwash. To evaluate the efficiency of AB and CB, a resistance in series model was used to calculate each resistance: membrane (Rm), reversible (Rrev) and irreversible (Rirr). The variation of the seawater quality was considered by integrating the turbidity variation versus time. The results indicate clearly that AB was more performant than CB and frequency of AB/CB cycles was...

Removal of pathogens by ultrafiltration from sea water ArchiMer
Cordier, Clémence; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Morga, Benjamin; Degrémont, Lionel; Voulgaris, Alexandra; Bacchi, Alessia; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
Among water treatment processes, ultrafiltration is known to be efficient for the elimination of micro-organisms (bacteria and viruses). In this study, two pathogens were targeted, a bacterium, Vibrio aestuarianus and a virus, OsHV-1, with the objective to produce high quality water from seawater, in the case of shellfish productions. The retention of those microorganisms by ultrafiltration was evaluated at labscale. In the case of OsHV-1, the protection of oysters was validated by in vivo experiments using oysters spat and larvae, both stages being highly susceptible to the virus. The oysters raised using contaminated seawater which was then subsequently treated by ultrafiltration, had similar mortality to the negative controls. In the case of V....

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated that in vitro controlled enzymatic hydrolysis of fish and shellfish proteins leads to bioactive peptides. Ultrafiltration (UF) and/or nanofiltration (NF) can be used to refine hydrolysates and also to fractionate them in order to obtain a peptide population enriched in selected sizes. This study was designed to highlight the impact of controlled UF and NF on the stability of biological activities of an industrial fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) and to understand whether fractionation could improve its content in bioactive peptides. RESULTS: The starting fish protein hydrolysate exhibited a balanced amino acid composition, a reproducible molecular weight (MW) profile, and a low sodium chloride content, allowing...

Operation and cleaning of ceramic membranes for the filtration of fish press liquor ArchiMer
Perez-galvez, Raul; Guadix, Emilia M.; Berge, Jean-pascal; Guadix, Antonio.
This paper assesses the performance of three ceramic membranes of average pore size 50 nm, 200 nm and 1.4 tan in the treatment of the press liquor resulting from a compaction operation of sardine by-products. To this end, 2 L of pre-filtered press liquor with an average protein content of 44 g/L were filtered during 3 h through the three membranes assayed. Unexpectedly, the membrane of larger pore size, presented the lowest values for the flux of permeate at steady state at 20 L/(m(2) h), while its average protein rejection (77%) was similar to that observed in the membrane of 200 nm. This fact was attributed to the difference in material of its active layer (a-alumina instead of zirconite). The cleaning efficiency of the membranes was assessed by the COD...

Castaing, Jean-baptiste.
The aim of this work is the study of seawater filtration process to preserve commercial bivalves and main tain their quality during harmful algal blooms. The originality of this work is based on the study of rustic processes, capable of removing toxic microalgae from seawater. Two filtration processes have been studied, the immersed hollow fibres membranes and a sand filter. The origin and nature of fouling mechanisms have been identified in connection with the selectivity and energy consumption . Suspensions of toxic and nontoxic microalgae were reconstituted and then filtered through 10 kDa, 300 kDa and 0.2 µm membranes and a sand filter (mean grain diameter dg equal to 250-520 µm). Microfiltration membrane 0.2 µm has emerged as the most suitable for the...

Recovery of valuable soluble compounds from washing waters generated during small fatty pelagic surimi processing by membrane processes ArchiMer
Dumay, Justine; Radier, Severine; Barnathan, Gilles; Berge, Jean-pascal; Jaouen, Pascal.
This work focuses on the treatment of washing waters coming from surimi manufacturing using ultrafiltration technology at a laboratory scale. Four membrane materials (poly-ether sulfone, polyacrilonytrile, poly vinylidene fluoride and regenerated cellulose) and 5 Molecular Weight Cut-Off (from 3 to 100 kDa) have been studied at bench laboratory scale using the pilot Rayflow (R) 100, commercialised by Rhodia Orelis. The investigation deals with the ability for membranes to offer a high retention of biochemical compounds (proteins and lipids). Results obtained during adsorption tests showed that the regenerated cellulose material seems to be the most appropriate with regards to pore size reduction due to the protein-adsorption. During the ultrafiltration of...

Air Backwash Efficiency on Organic Fouling of UF Membranes Applied to Shellfish Hatchery Effluents ArchiMer
Cordier, Clemence; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
Among all the techniques studied to overcome fouling generated in dead-end filtration, the injection of air during backwashes proved to be the most effective. Indeed, shear stress engendered by the two-phase flow enhanced particle removal on membrane surface. This work aims to study the injection of air to drain the membranes before backwash. Firstly, the efficiency of this backwash procedure was evaluated during the ultrafiltration of seawater on a semi industrial pilot plant using different operating conditions. Then, the treatment of seawater, doped with oyster gametes to simulate the filtration of shellfish hatchery effluents, was performed to confirm the hydraulic performance of the air backwash. Indeed, the release of gametes, expulsed by exotic...

The production by enzymatic treatment of fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) is a promising route to add value to fisheries proteinic co-products (fish frames, heads etc.). Indeed, FPH possess good nutritional properties and biological activities for food and feed uses. Pressure-driven membrane separations such as ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) can be used after the hydrolysis to, increase the specific activities of the FPH. This paper discusses the impact of a two-step UF/NF process producing four different fractions on two industrial FPH with different hydrolysis degrees. Fractionation is carried out in "realistic" conditions for an industrial process, on highly concentrated FPH solutions (about 100 g of dry matter/L) at a high volume reduction...

Impact of granular filtration on ultrafiltration membrane performance as pre-treatment to seawater desalination in presence of algal blooms ArchiMer
Sabiri, Nour-eddine; Sechet, Veronique; Jaouen, Pascal; Pontie, Maxime; Masse, Anthony; Plantier, Severine.
To mitigate fouling of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and improve permeate quality, we coupled granular filters (GF) with UF membrane as a pre-treatment for reconstituted seawater in the presence of algal bloom. Mono and bilayer granular filtrations were led at a mean velocity of 10 m h(-1) over a 7-hour period. Both GF gave the same algal cell retention rate (similar to 63%) after 7 hours of filtration. Turbidity reduction rate was 50% for the monolayer filter and 75% for the bilayer filter. Resulting organic matter removal rate was 10% for the monolayer filter and 35% for the bilayer filter. Dissolved organic carbon removal was low (20%) with the bilayer filter and non-existent with the monolayer filter. GF-coupled UF reduced humic acids in the...

Ultrafiltration for environment safety in shellfish production: removal of oyster gametes in hatchery effluents ArchiMer
Cordier, Clémence; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Dupuy, Beatrice; Papin, Mathias; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
Triploid oysters are favoured by the aquaculture industry because of their sterility, which results in two advantages: a faster growth than natural oysters and a constant quality throughout all the year, which is attractive for consumers. In France, these oysters are mainly produced by mating natural and tetraploid oysters whose production poses a risk for marine environmental biodiversity if biological material is released into the environment. Therefore, effluents from farms which could produce those kinds of oysters must be treated. The objective of this work was to treat shellfish hatchery effluents by ultrafiltration. The retention of gametes by the membrane, was validated for different scenario, 5 log removals were obtained, and their viability was...

Culture of Microalgae with Ultrafiltered Seawater: A Feasibility Study ArchiMer
Cordier, Clémence; Guyomard, Killian; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
The culture of microalgae is important for the production and maintenance of bivalves. One of the major challenges is to maintain the reliability of microalgae forages over the long term. The aim of this work is to use Ultrafiltered (UF) seawater to cultivate them. Thus, cultures in a volume of 300 L of 2 species of microalgae Tetraselmis and T-isochrysis, were monitored in UF water (membrane pore size: 20 nm) and in sea water usually used on the Ifremer mollusk experimental platform of Bouin (France) (Prefiltration, 3 filtrations and 2 UV). The major result is the securing of microlagae cultures with the absence of parasites in all cultures supplied with ultrafiltered water, unlike analyses of the various control cultures. The process of ultrafiltration (UF) of natural seawater often encounters the problems of variation in water quality and coastal blooms. To validate the feasibility of UF in shellfish farms, this study compared the hydraulic performance and pollutant removal efficiency of the UF process with those of the commonly used treatments that combine several filtration steps with UV disinfection. The comparison was conducted in the cases of natural seawater and a coastal bloom. Given that the UF process encountered this specific pollution, this study evaluated the filtration performance of the UF process and the retention of total suspended solids (TSS), bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton.
