The REDD+ policy arena in Vietnam: participation of policy actors Ecology and Society

Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+) has gained increasing global attention because of its potential to reduce carbon emissions and improve forest governance. Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation requires successful inclusive decision making and accountability. However, there have been limited empirical studies that examine the effectiveness of the current participatory mechanism used in REDD+. Our research analyzes the participation of policy actors in the development of the REDD+ instrument in Vietnam. We are interested in how the political context and the different interests of actors influence the degree of participation in national REDD+ policy decision making. We explored participation through the analysis of...

A Review of Two Payment Schemes for Watershed Services from China and Vietnam: the Interface of Government Control and PES Theory Ecology and Society
Kolinjivadi, Vijay K; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); vijay.kolinjivadi@mail.mcgill.ca; Sunderland, Terry; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); T.Sunderland@cgiar.org.
China and Vietnam have developed some of the most ambitious payments for ecosystem services (PES) initiatives for watershed conservation and forest management. These include the Sloping Land Conversion Programme in China and pilot projects designed to implement Decision 380 and the subsequent national PES law in Vietnam. This study reviews how these two government-driven initiatives are achieving their environment and development objectives in terms of their institutional arrangements, implementation in practice, and sustainability prospects. Although it remains too soon to determine the effects of these programs on watershed services, early evidence indicates that they are resulting in vulnerable land being retired from cultivation supported, in some...

Viral and Bacterial Epibionts in Thermally-Stressed Corals ArchiMer
Nguyen-kim, Hanh; Bouvier, Thierry; Bouvier, Corinne; Ngoc Bui, Van; Le-lan, Huong; Bettarel, Yvan.
The periodic rise in seawater temperature is one of the main environmental determinants of coral bleaching. However, the direct incidence of these episodic thermal anomalies on coral-associated microbiota and their subsequent effects on coral health are still not completely understood. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of three main microbial communities of the coral holobiont (e.g., Symbiodinium, bacteria and viruses), during an experimental thermal stress (+4 degrees C) conducted on the scleractinian Fungia repanda. The heat-treatment induced coral bleaching after 11 days and resulted in a final elevation of ca. 9, 130 and 250-fold in the abundance of mucosal viruses, bacteria, and Symbiodinium, respectively. On the contrary, the proportion of...

Rodda, M.; Trân, Thê Bách; Simonsson Juhonewe, N.; Sâm, Lý Ngọc.
A new species from the Annamite mountain range of central Vietnam, Hoya thuathienhuensis, is here described and illustrated.
