Cuts of dairy-origin cattle fed mesquite pod meal in replacement of corn Animal Sciences
Almeida, Marina de Paula; Souza, Evaristo Jorge Oliveira de; Véras, Antonia Sherlânea Chaves; Morais, Ítalo Marcos de Vasconcelos; Vítor, Danilo Ribeiro; Silva, José Ricardo Coelho da.
This study was carried out in order to assess commercial front and rear cuts of dairy-origin cattle fed mesquite pod meal. Twenty-five non-castrated male bovines (Holstein-Zebu), distributed according to a completely randomized design, with five animals per treatment, were used. The feed contained about 121.2 and 544.98 g kg-1 of crude protein and total digestible nutrients, respectively, and was composed of tifton grass hay, cornmeal, soybean meal, mesquite pod meal and mineral salt. The right half carcass of each animal was separated between the 5th and 6th ribs, in front and rear quarters, from which commercial cuts were obtained. There was no effect (p > 0.05) as to the replacement of corn for mesquite pod meal on the weights and yields of front...

Analysis of growth curves in different lineages of Caipira broiler type Animal Sciences
Araujo, Caroliny Costa; Rodrigues, Kênia Ferreira; Vaz, Roberta Gomes Marçal Vieira; Conti, Ana Carolina Muller; Amorim, Aline Ferreira; Campos, Carla Fonseca Alves.
The objective of this work was to identify, by means of different statistical criteria the ideal nonlinear regression model to describe the growth curve of three lineages of caipira broiler for meat production. A total of 90 birds were used, being 30 birds from each of the following lineages: Pescoço Pelado, Carijó and Pesadão Vermelho. The individual body weight of broilers (1, 7, 14, 21,28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84 and 91 days of age) was collected weekly for determination of growth curves by means of Models von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, Logistic, Richards and Brody. The parameters of Brody model did not converge to the weight of strains. The model that better adjusted to the data was Logistic.

Effect of age of dam on weight of calf in the genetic assessment of Zebu cattle in random regression models Animal Sciences
Ferreira, Jorge Luis; Lopes, Fernando Brito; Bresolin, Tiago; Garcia, José Américo Soares; Minharro, Silvia; Lôbo, Raysildo Barbosa.
Current analysis estimated co-variance components and genetic parameters for growth traits by random regression models taking into consideration the cow’s age on the weight of calves. Genealogical data and records on weights of male and female Zebu cattle, born between 1993 and 2011, were provided by the National Association of Breeders and Researchers (ANCP). Different models were compared by Akaike and Bayesian criteria. Legendre’s orthogonal polynomials were used to model the direct and maternal genetic effects of maternal and animal permanent environmental effects. Joint modeling of cow age at the moment their progenies were weighed resulted in more accurate estimates of co-variance components and genetics parameters. Co-variance functions of the cow...

Retrospective study of allometric relationship between heart rate, electrocardiographic parameters and bodyweight in dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Aleixo,A.S.C.; Alfonso,A.; Fillippi,M.G.; Chiacchio,S.B.; Lourenço,M.L.G..
ABSTRACT The allometric relationship between bodyweight (BW) and heart rate (HR) has been described as inversely proportional in domestic species, but that has been refuted. The relationship between HR and electrocardiographic variables is described in literature. However, studies about the variation and influence of factors on the hemodynamic and electrocardiographic parameters in dogs are not abundant. As the metabolic rate is defined as the production and dissipation of heat by the body surface area (BSA) in m², it is essential to define that relationship. A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the correlation between HR, ECG parameters and BW in dogs. One thousand electrocardiographic tracings were analyzed in addition to the ECG parameters and...

Blood parameters and measurements of weight in the rehabilitation of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus, Foster 1781) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Martins,A.M.; Silva Filho,R.P.; Xavier,M.O.; Meireles,M.C.A.; Robaldo,R.B..
During the austral winter the appearance of the Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is common on the southern coast of Brazil. The oil pollution constitutes a major cause of death of these birds. The monitoring of the weight and blood variables is important to make decisions during the rehabilitation and release of these animals. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the penguins' survival during rehabilitation and the values of hematocrit (Hct), total plasma protein (TPP) and body weight (BW) of the birds received at Centro de Recuperação de Animais Marinhos (Recovery Centre for Sea Animals) between 2006 and 2009. The analysis took place weekly, and penguins were classified according to the outcome of the...

Use of nucleotides in weanling rats with diarrhea induced by a lactose overload: effect on the evolution of diarrhea and weight and on the histopathology of intestine, liver and spleen BJMBR
Norton,R.; Leite,J.; Vieira,E.; Bambirra,E.; Moura,C.; Penna,G.; Penna,F..
Until recently, dietary sources of nucleotides were thought not to be essential for good nutrition. Certain states with higher metabolic demands may require larger amounts that cannot be provided by endogenous production. The objective of the present study was to determine the action of nucleotides on the recovery from lactose-induced diarrhea in weaned rats. Thirty-six weanling Fisher rats were divided into two groups. Group 1 received a standard diet and group 2 received a diet containing lactose in place of starch. On the 10th day, six animals per group were sacrificed for histopathological evaluation. The remaining animals were divided into two other subgroups, each with 6 animals, receiving a control diet, a control diet with nucleotides (0.05%...

Physicochemical changes in cubiu fruits (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) at different ripening stages Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Andrade Júnior,Moacir Couto de; Andrade,Jerusa Souza.
Cubiu shrubs (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) have drawn the attention of researchers for their biological versatility (preferential heliophilous or facultative ombrophilous shrubs), their capacity to grow in upland or lowland areas, and the good technological quality of their fruits for the food industry. The aim of this study was to verify physicochemical changes in cubiu fruits during maturation. The fruits were harvested from the experimental station of olericulture of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), Brazil. The analyses were performed in whole cubiu fruits (peel, pulp, and placenta) at four traditional ripening stages (green, turning, ripe, and fully ripe) for the determination of weight, moisture, total solids, total carotenoids,...

Adaptability and phenotypic stability for productive and reproductive traits in Nelore cattle Ciência Rural
Silveira,Mauricio Vargas da; Souza,Julio Cesar de; Ferraz Filho,Paulo Bahiense; Silva,Luiz Otavio Campos da; Arruda,Rosana Moreira da Silva; Machado,Carlos Henrique Cavallari; Pereira,Mariana Alencar.
ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to estimate adaptability and stability parameters for Nellore bulls in 3 different regions. The traits analyzed included the weight of the animals raised in pasture at 420 days of age (W420) and at the age at first calving (AFC). The information used in this study was related to the phenotypic mean of the females which were the offspring of the top ten classified bulls based in one region. We used the methods proposed by Finlay & Wilkinson (1963) & Eberhart and Russell (1966) in order to evaluate the parameters of adaptability and stability of these animals. The averages estimated by the method of least squares were 243.91±34.90 kg and 1182.54±57.82 days, respectively, for the traits W420 and AFC. Adaptability and...

Hernández-Briano,Pedro; Ramírez-Lozano,Roque Gonzalo; Carrillo-Muro,Octavio; López-Carlos,Marco Antonio; Méndez-Llorente,Fabiola; Aguilera-Soto,Jairo Iván.
ABSTRACT: One hundred eighty-nine Catalan crossbreed donkeys (Equus africanus asinus) were used to evaluate the effect of gender (gelding, n=106; or female, n=83) and live weight at slaughter (LW) (<100kg, n=25; 101 to 125kg, n=42; 126 to 150kg, n=85; and 151>kg, n=37) on carcass characteristics, non-carcass components and meat and fat color. Geldings had greater (P<0.05) carcass weight, carcass dressing and *L value of subcutaneous fat than females; but females had greater (P<0.05) cooling loss, a* value of semitendinosus muscle and b* value of subcutaneous fat. Donkeys with more than 126kg of LW showed greater (P<0.05) carcass weight and dressing and lower (P<0.05) cooling loss compared to lighter donkeys. The a* value of semitendinosus...

Evaporative snout cooling system on the performance of lactating sows and their litters in a subtropical region Ciência Rural
Perin,Jonas; Gaggini,Thais Schwarz; Manica,Samuel; Magnabosco,Diogo; Bernardi,Mari Lourdes; Wentz,Ivo; Bortolozzo,Fernando Pandolfo.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of different temperature control systems on the voluntary feed intake (VFI), percentage of weight loss (PWL) and performance of lactating sows as well as on the weight of their piglets. Two systems were used: traditional temperature control system (TTCS) with curtain management and an evaporative snout cooling system (ESCS). The study was performed during the summer of 2011. After farrowing and at the weaning, 241 sows were weighed to evaluate the PWL during lactation. TTCS sows lost more weight (5.3±0.9%; P<0.05) than ESCS sows (2.2±0.9%). VFI was measured at intervals of four days in 32 primiparous and 39 multiparous sows. ESCS sows had higher VFI (5.8±0.2kg day-1; P<0.05) than TTCS sows (4.8±0.2kg...

Analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism in the kappa-casein gene related to weight expected progeny difference in Nellore cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Biase,Fernando H.; Garnero,Analia Del V.; Bezerra,Luiz A.F.; Rosa,Arthur J.M.; Lôbo,Raysildo B.; Martelli,Lúcia.
Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) has been detected at the bovine kappa-casein locus. The polymorphism has been analyzed for its effects in cattle production, mostly for milk traits and even for maternal effect on pre-weaning weights. We used polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to genotype 408 Nellore animals for the non-silent mutation (Thr/Ile136 and Asp/Ala148) that characterizes the A and B variants of the polymorphism and compared expected progeny difference (EPD) for a maternal effect on 120 and 210 days weights and direct EPD for 120, 210, 450 and 550 day weight between AA and AB animals. The EPD values were obtained from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) Nellore Cattle Breeding Program,...

Mitochondrial DNA single nucleotide polymorphism associated with weight estimated breeding values in Nelore cattle (Bos indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Biase,Fernando Henrique; Meirelles,Flávio Vieira; Gunski,Ricardo; Vozzi,Pedro Alejandro; Bezerra,Luiz A.F.; Vila,Reginaldo A.; Rosa,Artur J.M.; Lôbo,Raysildo B.; Martelli,Lúcia.
We sampled 119 Nelore cattle (Bos indicus), 69 harboring B. indicus mtDNA plus 50 carrying Bos taurus mtDNA, to estimate the frequencies of putative mtDNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and investigate their association with Nelore weight and scrotal circumference estimated breeding values (EBVs). The PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to detect polymorphisms in the mitochondrial asparagine, cysteine, glycine, leucine and proline transporter RNA (tRNA) genes (tRNAasn, tRNAcys, tRNAgly, tRNAleu and tRNApro). The 50 cattle carrying B. taurus mtDNA were monomorphic for all the tRNA gene SNPs analyzed, suggesting that they are specific to mtDNA from B. indicus cattle. No tRNAcys or tRNAgly polymorphisms were...
