| The 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" was conducted from February 13th to June 30th, 1951. During these four and a half months, the vessel, which departed from Brest, stopped successively in Madeira, the French Caribbean, the Bermudas, Woods Hole, Halifax, on the banks of Newfoundland, the Azores Islands, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and then sailed back to Brest after 13,000 miles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Arné, in his "Contribution to the study of the mullet biology in the Bay of Biscay" (1) underlines the fact that his personal observations only focus on the material and information collected from May to June 1937, on the coasts of the departments of Gironde, Landes and Basses-Pyrénées. Our observations have been carried out over a different period of time (February-March 1953) and enable us to partially complete the previous study. | The natural oyster deposits of the Gironde region have been administratively classed by the decrees of July 31st, 1924 and April 10th, 1925, and recognised as healthy by decision n°5 of May 13th, 1941. These deposits are: deposits comprised between the upstream limit of the deposits (Chenal de By or red light n° 25) and the southern limit of the unsanitary zone of the Verdon river, La Reille, Goulée, Richard or La Fosse, Saint-Vivien, Cabiraux, Cheyzin, Verdon deposits, to the limit of the unsanitary zone. Oysters can also be found on the rocks and the structures of the Pointe de Grave, but their fishing is prohibited by the Ponts-et-Chaussées because of the necessity to protect the structures. These oysters are located in the unsanitary zone. |
