Two Cultures: Not Unique to Ecology Ecology and Society
Saner, Marc A; Carleton University, Department of Philosophy; saner@magma.ca.
Using examples from different disciplines, I show that the dualism between "analytical" and "integrative" approaches to scientific investigation is not unique to ecology. I argue that the resolution of (1) the apparent conflict between the two cultures of ecology and (2) the problem of finding a sound direction during the transition of ecology would benefit from a transdisciplinary approach. Candidate disciplines are any science within which complex systems are being investigated, as well as philosophy of science and environmental ethics.

Ecology of entomopathogenic fungi in agroecosystems Organic Eprints
Meyling, Nicolai V..
Fungi that infect insects have received considerable attention by scientists for their potential for biological control of pests. Many research projects have focussed on the selection of virulent strains for target pests and their development as biological control agents. In contrast, surprisingly little is known about the fundamental ecology of most of these fungi in nature. This knowledge is essential in order to receive the most ecosystem services provided by entomopathogenic fungi in agricultural production. Knowledge of the basic ecology of the fungi is also necessary to include them in conservation biological control. In this biological control strategy, agricultural practices and/or...

Ecology and the challenge of a multifunctional use of soil PAB
Lavelle,Patrick.
Soil zoology and soil ecology have become very active fields of research since the early 1990s. A search in the ISI Web of Science databases showed a steady increase in publications about that theme over the last two decades, and 3,612 bibliographic references were found for that theme for the period of 2004 to 2008. The researches covered mostly soil environmental issues, toxicology and ecology. The issue of theoretical development in soil ecology is discussed, and arguments are presented against the idea that the soil ecology theory is deficient. Finally, the need for a general model of soil function and soil management...

Evaluation Model of the Ecology Benefit Value of Woodland in China AgEcon
Wang, Xian-feng; Yin, Chun-wu.
Main influencing factors affecting the ecology benefit value of woodland are analyzed, mainly including the water conservation value, environment cleaning value, water and soil conservation value, and climate regulation value. Evaluation model of the ecology benefit value of woodland is put forward which can deal with the uncertain information. Method for determining index weights is discussed, as well as the processing method for uncertain information during the evaluation of ecology benefit value of woodland. Finally, the feasibility and convenience of the evaluation model of the woodland ecology benefit value are...

Some considerations about the ecology of Triatominae Anais da ABC (AABC)
Noireau,François; Carbajal-de-la-Fuente,Ana L.; Lopes,Catarina M.; Diotaiuti,Lileia.
Observations on the ecology of silvatic Triatominae are still fragmentary, principally because target species in control process are almost exclusively domestic. Report of silvatic species invading human dwellings must lead research to be focused on their original ecology, in order to assist in understanding their process of domestication and devising strategies for surveillance.
