Acute exercise and caffeine improve insulin-induced hypoglycemia in normal and malnourished rats Biological Sciences
Babata, Lucas Kazunori Rubira; Malta, Ananda; Godoi, Vilma Aparecida Ferreira de; Pedrosa, Maria Montserrat Diaz.
In food restriction, hypoglycemic episodes can be more severe and persistent. This study assessed the influence of acute exercise and caffeine on the insulin-induced hypoglycemia in freely-fed or malnourished (50% food restriction) young rats. At the age of 60 days, rats under overnight fasting received an insulin injection to cause an episode of hypoglycemia. In some animals, hypoglycemia was preceded by an acute session of exercise, in others, caffeine was orally given 15 minutes after insulin injection; or exercise and caffeine were combined. Blood samples were collected at regular intervals for five hours after insulin...

Atrial natriuretic peptide and feeding activity patterns in rats BJMBR
This review presents historical data about atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) from its discovery as an atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) to its role as an atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH). As a hormone, ANP can interact with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-A) and is related to feeding activity patterns in the rat. Food restriction proved to be an interesting model to investigate this relationship. The role of ANP must be understood within a context of peripheral and central interactions involving different peptides and pathways

Down-regulation of the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum ryanodine channel in severely food-restricted rats BJMBR
Vizotto,V.A.; Carvalho,R.F.; Sugizaki,M.M.; Lima,A.P.; Aragon,F.F.; Padovani,C.R.; Castro,A.V.B.; Dal Pai-Silva,M.; Nogueira,C.R.; Cicogna,A.C..
We have shown that myocardial dysfunction induced by food restriction is related to calcium handling. Although cardiac function is depressed in food-restricted animals, there is limited information about the molecular mechanisms that lead to this abnormality. The present study evaluated the effects of food restriction on calcium cycling, focusing on sarcoplasmic Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2), phospholamban (PLB), and ryanodine channel (RYR2) mRNA expressions in rat myocardium. Male Wistar-Kyoto rats, 60 days old, were submitted to ad libitum feeding (control rats) or 50% diet restriction for 90 days. The levels of left ventricle...

Food limitation and low-density populations of sympatric hamster species in North China Naturalis
Xiong, W.; Liang, H.; Yu, X.; Cong, L.; Zhang, Z..
Although food has been proposed as a possible factor on population regulation of small mammals, evidence of food restriction in field conditions is still lacking. Food restriction is generally thought to occur in high-density years of oscillating populations of small mammals. By using two body condition indices (muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index), we investigated variations of body condition of the greater long-tailed hamster (Tscherskia triton) and the striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) in the Raoyang County of the North China Plain during a population decline- and low-phase from 1998 to 2003....

Food restriction beginning at lactation interferes with the cellular dynamics of the mucosa and colonic myenteric innervation in adult rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHOFFEN,JOÃO PAULO F.; VICENTINI,FERNANDO A.; MARCELINO,CAROLINA G.; ARAÚJO,EDUARDO J.A.; PEDROSA,MARIA M.D.; NATALI,MARIA R.M..
The effects of food restriction (FR) on the morphoquantitative aspects of the wall and myenteric neurons of the proximal colon in adult rats were analysed. FR was imposed by duplication of the experimental brood size in relation to the control brood during lactation. The FR group received a 50% reduction of food from weaning until 90 days of age. Samples of the colon underwent histological processing to morphometrically analyze the crypts, muscularis mucosae, tunica mucosa, and muscularis externa. We determined the number of goblet cells and serotoninergic enteroendocrine cells, and morphoquantitatively studied the myenteric neuronal population. FR caused hypertrophy in the tunica mucosa,...

Blood glucose regulation during fasting in rats under food restriction since birth BABT
Vitoriano,Adriana de Souza; Malta,Ananda; Barrena,Helenton Christian; Furlan,Maria Montserrat Diaz Pedrosa; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa; Gazola,Vilma Godoi.
The effect of severe food restriction since birth on regulation of fasting glycemia in male Wistar rats was investigated. The control group (CG) had free supply of chow, while the restriction group (RG) received 50% of the amount ingested by the CG. The experiments were done in adult (60 days) overnight fasted rats in which glycemia, liver free glucose levels and hepatic glycogen concentration were measured. In part of the experiments in situ liver perfusion was done. The results showed that livers from the RG had higher glycogenolysis rates but lower gluconeogenesis rates from L-alanine (10 mM). Since RG showed maintained glycemia during fasting, it could be concluded that livers from RG...

Secretory Patterns of Leptin and Luteinizing Hormone in Food-Restricted Young Female Sheep Biol. Res.
RECABARREN,SERGIO E; LOBOS,ALEJANDRO; TORRES,VERÓNICA; OYARZO,ROBERTO; SIR-PETERMANN,TERESA.
Leptin, the product of the ob gene, has been proposed as a metabolic signal that regulates the secretion of GnRH/LH. This may be critical during prepubertal development to synchronize information about energy stores and the secretion of GnRH/LH. This study aimed to assess the effect of food restriction on the episodic secretion of leptin and LH in young female sheep. Five 20-week-old prepubertal females were fed a low-level diet for 10 weeks to maintain the body weight. Control females of the same age received food ad libitum. Blood samples were collected at 10-min intervals for six hours at 20, 26, and 30 weeks of age, and plasma leptin, LH, insulin and cortisol concentrations were...

Adipose tissue is less responsive to food restriction anti-inflammatory effects than liver, muscle, and brain in mice BJMBR
Antunes,M.M.; de Almeida-Souza,C.B.; Godoy,G.; Crisma,A.R.; Masi,L.N.; Curi,R.; Bazotte,R.B..
High caloric intake promotes chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and chronic diseases such as type-2 diabetes, which may be prevented by food restriction (FR). The effect of FR on expression of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory genes in adipose tissue, liver, muscle, and brain was compared. Male Swiss mice were submitted to FR (FR group) or had free access to food (control group) during 56 days. The liver, gastrocnemius muscle, brain, and epididymal white adipose tissue (WAT) were collected for analysis of gene expressions. FR attenuated inflammation in the liver, brain, and gastrocnemius muscle but did not markedly change inflammatory gene expression in epididymal WAT. We...

How Does Protein Malnutrition or Food Deprivation Interfere with the Growth of the Epiphyseal Plate in Animals? International Journal of Morphology
da Silva,Karina de Carvalho; Silva,Camilla Rodrigues de Souza; Costa,Rita de Cássia da Silva; de Moraes,Sílvia Regina Arruda.
the aim of this study was to conduct a literature review of impacts of protein malnutrition and/or early food deprivation on the formation of the growth plate in young animals. A search was performed using the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO and the Cochrane Library, without language restrictions or any limit as to year. Initially, 150 articles were identified, however, after application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria only five remained. In three studies the nutritional stress was due to protein malnutrition, another due to fasting and the fifth was due to food restriction. All the studies had some methodological omissions. The studies included in this review-demonstrated...

Okoshi,K.; Fioretto,J.R.; Okoshi,M.P.; Cicogna,A.C.; Aragon,F.F.; Matsubara,L.S.; Matsubara,B.B..
Cardiac structures, function, and myocardial contractility are affected by food restriction (FR). There are few experiments associating undernutrition with hypertension. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of FR on the cardiac response to hypertension in a genetic model of hypertension, the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Five-month-old SHR were fed a control or a calorie-restricted diet for 90 days. Global left ventricle (LV) systolic function was evaluated in vivo by transthoracic echocardiogram and myocardial contractility and diastolic function were assessed in vitro in an isovolumetrically beating isolated heart (Langendorff preparation). FR reduced LV...

The gastroprotective effect of Memora nodosa roots against experimental gastric ulcer in mice Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,DAYANE M.; MARTINS,JOSÉ L.R.; FLORENTINO,IZIARA F.; OLIVEIRA,DANILLO R.; FAJEMIROYE,JAMES O.; TRESNVENZOL,LEONICE M.F.; PAULA,JOSÉ R.; COSTA,ELSON A..
ABSTRACT Memora nodosa is popularly known as "caroba" and widely found in the Cerrado regions of Brazil. In traditional medicine, the leaves and stems are used for the healing of external ulcer and the roots for abdominal pain. This study investigated the effect of ethanolic roots extract of Memora nodosa (EMN) on the gastric mucosa of mice. In the indomethacin induced gastric ulcer model, the treatments of the animals with EMN at doses of 100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg, p.o., markedly reduced the index of lesions. In the gastric ulcer models induced by ethanol and cold restraint-stress the previous treatment with EMN at dose of 300 mg/kg showed 69% and 43% of protection, respectively. Seven days after food-restriction, the...

Anxiogenic-like effect of acute and chronic fluoxetine on rats tested on the elevated plus-maze BJMBR
Silva,M.T.A.; Alves,C.R.R.; Santarem,E.M.M..
The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine (FLX) is widely prescribed for depression and anxiety-related disorders. On the other hand, enhanced serotonergic transmission is known to be classically related to anxiety. In this study, the effects of acute (5.0 mg/kg) and chronic (5.0 mg/kg, 22 days) FLX were investigated in both food-deprived and non-deprived rats tested in the elevated plus-maze. Significant main effects of the three factors (drug, food condition and administration regimen) were observed, but no interaction between them. The administration of either acute or chronic FLX resulted in an anxiogenic effect, as detected by a significant reduction in the percentage of time spent in the open arms and in the percentage of open arm...
