The clinical impact of [18F]-FDG Pet during the opening year of a Pet centre BABT
Talbot,Jean-Noël.
We have evaluated the clinical impact of FDG-PET on patient staging and management during the opening year of our PET centre in France. A questionnaire, translation in French of the questionnaire used recently in California, was sent to the referring physician of each of the 476 patients who had at least one routine FDG-PET examination during the year 2000. Of 348 responses (response rate = 73%), the disease was upstaged in 26% of the cases and downstaged in 9%. Inter-modality management changes (change from a scheduled therapeutic modality for a different one) were reported in 37% of the cases and intra-modality changes in 9%. Those modification rates...

Cross-modal facilitation of visual and tactile motion Nature Precedings
David Burr; Giulio Sandini; Monica Gori.
Robust and versatile perception of the world is augmented considerably when information from our five separate sensory systems is combined. Much recent evidence has demonstrated near-optimal integration across senses, but it remains unclear at what level the integration occurs, at a "sensory" or "decisional" level. Here we show that non-informative "pedestal" motion stimuli in one sensory modality (vision or touch) selectively lowers thresholds in the other, to the same degree as pedestals in the same modality: strong evidence for functionally important cross-sensory integration at early levels of sensory processing.

Modulation of auditory responses by modality-specific attention in rat primary auditory cortex Nature Precedings
Lung-Hao Tai; Anthony M. Zador.
How does attention modulate sensory representations? In order to probe the underlying neural mechanisms, we established a simple rodent model of modality-specific attention. Here we describe results of experiments in freely moving rats in which we have used tetrodes to record neural responses in primary auditory cortex (area A1) while subjects performed this behavior.

Subjects were first trained to perform distinct auditory and olfactory two alternative forced-choice (2AFC) tasks. Training and testing were conducted in a custom three-poke computer-controlled behavioral apparatus. Subjects initiated trials with a center-poke, which triggered presentation of a tone (either 5 or 15 Hz), an...

Impacts of the Doha Round on Korea's Agricultural Tariff Profile AgEcon
Lim, Song-Soo.
The purpose of this paper is to simulate the proposed modality in market access and estimate its potential impacts on Korea's tariff profile. By accommodating a tiered formula for tariff reduction, the modality attempts to harmonize tariffs across products and countries. When no flexibility in tariff cuts is taken into account, Korea would face up to 68 percent reduction in tariffs in an average term (the baseline). The provision of sensitive products in which the tariff cuts are allowed to deviate from the tiered formula by two-thirds at a maximum is likely to bring about 11 percentage points of maximum tariff saving effects compared with the baseline case. Besides, Korea would be able to...

Neural Mechanisms of Selective Auditory Attention in Rats (Dissertation) Nature Precedings
Lung-Hao Tai; Anthony M. Zador.
How does attention modulate sensory representations? In order to probe the underlying neural mechanisms, we established a simple rodent model of modality-specific attention. Rats were trained to perform distinct auditory two-tone discrimination and olfactory odor discrimination in a two alternative choice (2AC) paradigm.
To determine auditory cortex’s role in this frequency discrimination task, we used GABA-A receptor agonist muscimol to transiently and reversibly inactivate auditory cortexes bilaterally in rats performing simple interleaved auditory and olfactory discrimination. With olfactory discrimination performance serving as internal control for motivation and decision making capability,...

Andrade,Alexandre Lima de; Fernandes,Marco Antônio Rodrigues; Sakamoto,Silmara Sanae; Luvizotto,Maria Cecília Rui.
The purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of beta-radiation with strontium-90 as single modality treatment of canine third eyelid squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Nine dogs diagnosed with third eyelid SCC were treated with strontium-90. Radiation therapy was administered in four fractions of 100cGy per site every four days and at a depth of 0.2cm (Strontium-90 build' up) in each fraction. Radiation with beta therapy was well tolerated in all animals with no occurrence of radiation induced cataracts. In all cases, there were increased signs of conjunctival inflammation around the mass, which subsided with topical anti-inflammatory. Two dogs required surgical treatment for local tumor recurrence at 150 days and 352 days....

An insight on the role of photosensitizer nanocarriers for Photodynamic Therapy Anais da ABC (AABC)
MESQUITA,MARIANA Q.; DIAS,CRISTINA J.; GAMELAS,SARA; FARDILHA,MARGARIDA; NEVES,MARIA G.P.M.S.; FAUSTINO,MARIA AMPARO F..
ABSTRACT Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a modality of cancer treatment in which tumor cells are destroyed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by photosensitizers following its activation with visible or near infrared light. The PDT success is dependent on different factors namely on the efficiency of the photosensitizer deliver and targeting ability. In this review a special attention will be given to the role of some drug delivery systems to improve the efficiency of tetrapyrrolic photosensitizers to this type of treatment.

Common causes of false positive F18 FDG PET/CT scans in oncology BABT
Carter,Kevin R.; Kotlyarov,Eduard.
PET/CT is a common imaging modality used in the evaluation of oncology patients. While being extremely sensitive to identifying sights of malignancy F18FDG is very non-specific. We attempted to provide a brief review of some of the more common processes that a nuclear radiology physician may encounter in daily clinical practice that could result in a false positive diagnosis with F18FDG PET/CT. A fundamental understanding of the limitations of this technology by the interpreting physician is necessary to avoid making inaccurate diagnosis and potentially limiting important treatments for our patients.

Clinical application of pet BABT
Lomeña,Francisco; Soler,Marina.
Positron emission tomography (PET) is an imaging modality that gives information on tissue metabolism and functionalism, different from other imaging techniques like computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which provide anatomical or structural information. PET has reached its development in biomedical research because of its capacity to use analogous compounds of many endogenous substance as tracers, and to measure, in vivo and in a non-invasive way, their consumption by the different organs and tissues of the mammalian body. Fluordeoxyglucose-F18 (FDG) PET has been proven to be a tracer adequate for clinical use in oncology and in many neurological diseases, with an excellent cost-efficiency ratio....

Normalization of elevated liver enzymes due to V-1 Immunitor therapy Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Jirathitikal,Vichai; Metadilogkul,Orapun; Bourinbaiar,Aldar S..
V-1 Immunitor (V1) is an oral AIDS vaccine currently being used as a therapeutic modality by HIV-positive patients. Upon interim analysis of phase I safety trial it has been discovered that patients who had elevated liver enzymes aspartate (AST/SGOT) and alanine (ALT/SGPT) aminotransferases have experienced the reduction of enzyme levels back to normal. Two other hepatitis markers alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin have also decreased. V1’s effect may be hepatitis-specific since liver enzymes in normal patients treated with V1 have not changed and three patients who were Hepatitis B antigen positive at baseline became negative after therapy. The results suggest that V1 supplementation reduces hepatic damage caused by...

Preoperative Computed Tomographic Evaluation of Inferior Nasal Concha Hypertrophy and its Role in Deciding Surgical Treatment Modality in Patients with Deviated Nasal Septum International Journal of Morphology
Mrig,Sumit; Agarwal,A. K; Passey,J. C.
Deviated nasal septum is associated with compensatory hypertrophy of the inferior nasal concha on the contralateral side. In the past conventional septoplasty was done for the deviated septum, which would improve the patency on the side of deviation but would worsen it on the opposite side due to reallocation of the septum to the midline. The present study of 50 patients unfolds the anatomical composition of the inferior nasal concha based on the computed tomographic scan and help the otolaryngologist to determine whether to add turbinoplasty to standard septoplasty procedure or not.

IMPLICATION OF THE INFORMATIC KNOWLEDGE AgEcon
Sorea, Daniella.
The contemporary education process is necessary tied to information-technology and to Informatic. By using the Internet as source and as knowledge’s transmission modality one modifies the learning parameters. From the quantitative point of view, the Informatic increases the education process efficiency. From the qualitative point of view, the Informatic imposes a change of the education paradigm. The Informatic determines status modifications for the purveyor and for the beneficiary of the knowledge. The Informatic modifies the psychosocial characteristics of the knowledge process too. Using the Internet supposes the assumption of at least two levels reality. A more than one level reality representation agrees with the...

FOOD AID AND CHILD NUTRITION IN RURAL ETHIOPIA AgEcon
Quisumbing, Agnes R..
This paper uses a unique panel data set from Ethiopia to examine the determinants of participation in and receipts of food aid through free distribution (FD) and food-for-work (FFW). Results show that aggregate rainfall and livestock shocks increase household participation in both FD and FFW. FFW also seems well-targeted to asset-poor households. The probability of receiving FD does not appear to be targeted based on household wealth, but FD receipts are lower for wealthier households. The effects of FD and FFW on child nutritional status differ depending on the modality of food aid and the gender of the child. Both FFW and FD have a positive direct impact on weight-for-height. Households invest proceeds from FD in girls’...

Operant serial feature-positive conditional discrimination with composite features and different topography responses BJMBR
Bueno,J.L.O.; Scaduto,A.A..
In a serial feature-positive conditional discrimination procedure the properties of a target stimulus A are defined by the presence or not of a feature stimulus X preceding it. In the present experiment, composite features preceded targets associated with two different topography operant responses (right and left bar pressing); matching and non-matching-to-sample arrangements were also used. Five water-deprived Wistar rats were trained in 6 different trials: X-R®Ar and X-L®Al, in which X and A were same modality visual stimuli and the reinforcement was contingent to pressing either the right (r) or left (l) bar that had the light on during the feature (matching-to-sample); Y-R®Bl and Y-L®Br, in which Y and B were same...
