A new Orthotyline Mirid (Heteroptera) from Syria Naturalis
Doesburg, P.H. van.
A new species, Zanchius stami Van Doesburg (Insecta, Heteroptera, Miridae, Orthotylinae) from Syria, Deir-ez-Zor, is described and illustrated. Late eggs taken from the female abdomen have a peculiar chorionic process. It was found living (predaciously?) on cotton plants. It is compared with the closely related Z. alatanus Hoberlandt, 1956. Type specimens are deposited in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, two paratypes in the Národní Muzeum, Praha.

Impacts of risk aversion on whole-farm management in Syria AgEcon
Pannell, David J.; Nordblom, Thomas L..
This article reports on a study of the impact of risk on farm management practices in northern Syria, focusing particularly on how these are affected by risk aversion and farm size. The study is based on production data from an eight‐year field trial and on prices from market surveys. A large linear programming model is built, representing the eight years as observations from a discrete probability distribution. Risk aversion is modelled by inclusion of a utility function with constant relative risk aversion, represented using the DEMP/UEP approach.

Genetic Diversity of Some Capparis L. Species Growing in Syria BABT
Al- Safadi,Bassam; Faouri,Hussam; Elias,Rana.
This work investigated the genetic diversity and relationships among Capparis species growing in Syria using IRAP and ISSR techniques. Forty-seven samples of three Capparis species genotypes were collected from 21 different locations in Syria. The genotypes were morphologically identified based on the descriptions available in the literature. When IRAP technique was used, an average of 71.5% of the amplified fragments were polymorphic compared to 82.04% in ISSR. Morphological characterization along with the cluster and PCoA analyses of the data divided the studied genotypes into three groups. The groups included genotypes identified as Capparis spinosa L, C. sicula Duh., and C. aegyptia...

Climatic characteristics of the late Pleistocene and Holocene continental deposits from southwestern Syria based on palynological data Darwiniana
Hussein,Kamal M..
The goal of this research was to reconstruct the vegetational and climatic changes that took place during the late Pleisocene and Holocene in southwestern Syria. This reconstruction was based on palynological data obtained from the analysis of 27 sediments and surface samples (with a total thickness of 4.55 m) collected from Al-Hijaneh Lake basin (late Pleistocene) and from Al-Aouaj River valley (Holocene). Three pollen zones were established. The oldest one (zone A) corresponds to the late Pleistocene lacustrine deposits of Lake Al-Hijaneh. Zones B and C were defined in the Holocene fluvial- lacustrine deposits of the Al-Aouaj River valley. These three pollen assemblage zones are correlated to synchronic and similar C14...

Water management development and agriculture in Syria AgEcon
Haddad, George; Szeles, Ivett; Zsarnoczai, J. Sandor.
Irrigated agriculture has increased steadily in Syria over the last decades, almost doubling since 1985. This mounting pace has responded to the nation’s food security policy objectives to satisfy the food production needs of an increasing population that features one of the largest growth rates in the world, namely 3,50 percent in 1985 and still 3,39 percent in 2007. Total expenditures for irrigated agriculture accounted for almost 70 percent of all expenditures in agriculture. Sustainable irrigation water policies aimed at increasing the efficiency of water use in agriculture and at conserving water resources by reducing future consumption. The Euphrates River is 2.800 km long and its middle traverses a wide floodplain...

Screening for resistance to leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) in barley Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.J..
Resistance against leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea ) have been described in the literature, but only little is known about the resistance in modern varieties. Investigations have been started in co-operation with Danish breeders with the objective to ensure availability of healthy seed for pesticide-free and organic growing of cereals. The results so far show great variation in susceptibility to leaf stripe. Most of the tested varieties or lines were susceptible, but some varieties had a moderate level of resistance and a few were highly resistant. The test have been made with different populations collected from Denmark but only little is known about the virulence pattern in leaf stripe.

A primary survey of aphid species on almond and peach, and natural enemies of Brachycaudus amygdalinus in As-Sweida, Southern Syria Organic Eprints
Almatni, W.; Khalil, N..
Syria is one of the biggest almond producer country in the world. Few arthropdes that live on almond are consider as pests. Aphids are one of the major pests their. In order to change the product to organic we should know more about the pests and their natural enemies in order to use better bio- and organic decisions. A field survey was done to aphids that attack Almond and Peach in Al-Arab mountain at As- Sweida governorate, between 2002 and 2006. Three species of aphids were considered as important pests on both trees. They are Brachycaudus amygdalinus and Brachycaudus helichrysi, which are aphids that feed on the young leaves causing stunted growth; and Pterochloroides persicae which is a species that attack the...

Poverty Mapping in Rural Syria for Enhanced Targeting AgEcon
Szonyi, Judit A.; de Pauw, Eddy; La Rovere, Roberto; Aw-Hassan, Aden.
Poverty maps allow assessing the well-being of rural population in a spatial context and identifying poverty hotspots. The maps can be used for regional policy analysis as they help in identifying areas where the rural poor live and where rural poverty is determined by the endowment and quality of natural resources and by population pressure. Natural resource endowment was assessed in the study by calculating an Agricultural Resource Index based on the availability of different major agricultural resources. Income per-capita was calculated by using census data, adjusted by the rural population density. The results show that the better income areas of Syria are located in the irrigated or higher-rainfall areas, but...

The Impacts of GAFTA on Syrian Trade after Its full Implementation AgEcon
Babili, Mahmoud; Baghasa, Hajar.
Studies about GAFTA’s impact on Syria are still few, especially those about its impacts on the agricultural sector. In fact, concerned researchers are in urgent need to know recent developments in GAFTA implementation and to review its updated impacts on Syrian agricultural sector. Therefore, we, NAPC, suggested producing a working paper about GAFTA, including revision for its current situation, its implementation’s impact on Syrian agricultural trade, and economic regression for Syrian- GAFTA members trade comparing with Syrian- third parties trade (especially the EU). In addition to the general introduction, the paper also includes an evaluation to the Syrian position on the scale of GAFTA targets’ achievement. The paper...

Tribes, State, and Technology Adoption in Arid Land Management, Syria AgEcon
Rae, Jonathan; Arab, Georges; Nordblom, Thomas L.; Jani, K.; Gintzburger, Gustave.
Arid shrub-lands in Syria and elsewhere in West Asia and North Africa are widely thought degraded. Characteristic of these areas is a preponderance of unpalatable shrubs or a lack of overall ground cover with a rise in the associated risks of soil erosion. Migrating pastoralists have been the scapegoats for this condition of the range. State steppe interventions of the last forty years have reflected this with programs to supplant customary systems with structures and institutions promoting western grazing systems and technologies. Principal amongst the latter has been shrub technology, particularly Atriplex species, for use in land rehabilitation and as a fodder reserve. This paper deconstructs state steppe policy in...

Targeting Research for Enhanced Impact on Poverty in Marginal Areas: The Representative Case of the Dry Areas of Syria AgEcon
La Rovere, Roberto; Aw-Hassan, Aden.
Agricultural research in marginal dry areas can contribute to reducing poverty through the development of technological, institutional and policy options for poor farmers by addressing diversified opportunities and development pathways. This paper analyzes the diversity of rural livelihood strategies in the Khanasser Valley in northwest Syria, an area representative of marginal drylands. We experimentally define an operational classification of household typologies based on their different livelihood strategies, capabilities, and opportunities by applying a Sustainable Livelihoods framework. Livelihoods diversity has implications on where and how research must be targeted to have impact on poverty. Households less endowed...
