Effects of the weaning age of calves on somatic development and on reproductive performance of beef cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva.
This study evaluated body development and reproductive performance of beef cows whose calves were submitted to early weaning (76 days of age), or conventional weaning (148 days of age). It was used 141 Braford cows that calved in 2004, 2005, and 2006 to evaluate weight at calving at 76 days, weight at calving at 148 days, weight at the beginning and end of the breeding season, variation of the average daily weight, body condition, pregnancy rate, and calving interval. Dams of calves weaned at 148 days of age showed daily weight gain higher body weight and better body condition at 148 days of age. The weights at the end of breeding season and average weight gain during the breeding season...

Influence of weaning age on the reproductive efficiency of primiparous cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva; Restle,João.
The effects of weaning age (90 days or 156 days) of female beef calves were evaluated on their subsequent performance from the beginning of the first pregnancy and the end of the second breeding season, at 22/24 months of age. During pregnancy, heifers were managed as a single group on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture; after calving, on bristle oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.); and on Brachiaria humidicula pasture during the second reproductive period. The characteristics studied were not influenced by calf weaning age. Heifers submitted to early or conventional weaning weighed 354.5 and 351.9 kg in the...

Sow body condition at weaning and reproduction performance in organic piglet production Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Hermansen, J.E..
The objective was to investigate the variation in backfat at weaning and its relations to reproduction results in organic sow herds in Denmark. The study included eight herds and 573 sows. The average backfat at weaning mean13 mm; SD4.2 mm) ranging from 10.5 to 17.3 mm among herds shows that it is possible to avoid poor body condition at weaning even with a lactation length of seven weeks or more. No main effect of backfat at weaning on reproduction performance was found, but the probability of a successful reproduction after weaning tended to decrease with decreasing backfat for first...

Energetic costs of reproduction in female northern muriquis, Brachyteles hypoxanthus (Primates: Platyrrinhi: Atelidae) Zoologia
Guedes,Danusa; Young,Robert J.; Strier,Karen B..
Infant care is known to impose high energetic costs on female primates because in addition to lactation, most primate mothers also provide transport for their offspring. Many studies have documented the high energetic costs of lactation, but less is known about energetic costs of infant carrying and their effects on the recovery of maternal physical condition. We compared the activities of female northern muriquis (Brachyteles hypoxanthus Kuhl, 1820) over a 12-month period at the RPPN Feliciano Miguel Abdala, Minas Gerais, Brazil to investigate whether mothers during their weaning year behaved differently than mothers in their post-weaning year, when they resumed reproductive cycling and...

Age at weaning and the endocrine response to stress Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bueno,A.R.; Rasby,R.; Clemens,E.T..
Seventy-five Angus x MARC II crossbred heifers were used to assess the effects of age at weaning on calf performance and blood constituents. Calves were weaned at 150, 210, or 270 days of age with comparisons made to their non-weaned counterparts. Changes in blood chemistry and hematology (cortisol, glucose, T3, total proteins, packed cell volume and the differential white blood cell count) were recorded on the day of weaning (day-0), and at 2, 7, 14, and 28 days post-weaning. Calves weaned at 210 days of age presented the highest plasma cortisol, glucose, and total protein concentrations during their early post-weaning...

Teat order affects postweaning behaviour in piglets Ciência Rural
Sommavilla,Roberta; Costa,Osmar Antonio Dalla; Honorato,Luciana Aparecida; Cardoso,Clarissa Silva; Hötzel,Maria José.
The objective of this study was to investigate if piglets that suck anterior teats differ from the others in the litter in birth weight, if they have higher growth rate during lactation, and if this affects behaviour and post-weaning weight gain, when piglets change to a solid diet. For this, the teat order of 24 litters was determined during suckling. Piglets were weaned on the 28thday of age, and 24 groups were formed, composed of one piglet that sucked on the first two pairs of teats (AT) and three piglets that sucked on the other teats (OT). Even though weight at birth did not vary according to teat order, weight gain at weaning differed between the groups (AT: 6.64, S.E. 0.20kg, OT:...

Improvement of organic pig production with homeopathic and phytotherapeutic prophylaxis and herd health management - Revision of Organic Pig Production and experiences of improvements of post weaning colibacillosis under field conditions Organic Eprints
Vila Camps, Luis.
At the time of weaning, piglets are under many stress factors such as the end of milk immunity, separation from the mother, mixing with other animals, the adaptation to new diets and new pens, etc. Piglets usually show a non infection malabsorption syndrome response and Immunological System depression. Some bacteria such as Escherichia coli can make use of that situation and grow producing the Post Weaning Diarrhoea Syndrome. This syndrome produces an awkward situation for the productive rates and for animal welfare. The cause of this disease is multifactorial and therefore it makes no sense to look for an individual solution. Homeopathic and phytotherapeutic prophylaxis, and in that...

Claus,Luís Afonso Marques; Koetz Júnior,Celso; Roso,Vanerlei Mozaquatro; Borges,Marcelo Henrique Favaro; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim; Ribeiro,Edson Luis de Azambuja.
ABSTRACT This study aimed at estimating the heritability of age at first calving and of performance traits included in the selection index and the genetic correlations between age at first calving and these performance traits. Data were extracted from the Conexão Delta G database and only data from herds in which heifers were bred younger than 24 months of age were used, resulting in a file with 331,310 evaluated animals. The following traits were included in the analyses: age at first calving, birth to weaning gain, post-weaning weight gain, visual scores of conformation, precocity, and muscling evaluated at weaning and in yearling heifers. Covariance...

Relationship among body condition at parturition, decrease of backfat thickness and weight during the lactation and the interval from weaning to oestrus of sows Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
GUEDES,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; NOGUEIRA,Raimundo Hilton Girão.
The main objectives of this study were to verify the relationship among body condition at parturition, decrease of backfat thickness and weight during the lactation and the interval from weaning to oestrus of sows. It was performed with 10 gilts and 10 fifth, sixth and seventh parity Camborough sows. The average breeding age and weight of the gilts were respectively 231 days and 149.5 kg. During lactation all females were fed a wet diet (3.34 Mcal/kg, 17% CP), ad libitum. The average daily food consumption was 5.233 for gilts and 5.721 kg for multiparous sows. Ultrasonic measurements of backfat at the P2 site were recorded on day 6 before and days 2, 7, 14, 21 and 25 after parturition. Body weight was recorded on the same...

Production de juvéniles de bar (Dicentrarchus labrax) en marais. Etude de trois séquences alimentaires de sevrage ArchiMer
Buchet, Vincent; Palvadeau, Hubert; Boussard, O..
Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The achieved results show that weaning with intermediary phases (sequences 2 or 3) yield best results....

HACCP for Weaning Diarrhoea Organic Eprints
Früh, Barbara; Dippel, Sabine; Leeb, Christine.
Deliverables of the COREPIG project are management tools based on the HACCP principle (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points). These tools help farmers (in a farm specific way) to solve and prevent problems with endoparasites, reproduction and farrowing problems, weaning diarrhoea and suckling piglet mortality. They are available as Microsoft Excel® files. We recommend that the tools be used by the farmer together with the farm's advisor or veterinarian. Each tool contains instructions for use and consists of three parts: i) a questionnaire for the farmer, ii) a check list to be used in the barn and iii) the farm specific report.

The Effect of Early vs. Normal Calf Weaning on Feedlot Performance and Herd Management: A Cross-Discipline Case Study AgEcon
Salverson, Robin R.; Fausti, Scott W.; Landblom, Douglas G.; Johnson, Patricia S.; Beutler, Martin; Gates, Roger N.; Patterson, Hubert H.; Paisley, Steven I..
A study of early vs. normal weaning of calves concludes that early weaning improves feedlot production efficiency, reducing per day and per pound feedlot production costs. Early weaned steers finished higher thus feedlot profitability was not affected. Early weaning has a positive affect on cow health and pasture utilization rates.

Breeding objectives and economic values for traits of low input family-based beef cattle production system in the State of Rio Grande do Sul R. Bras. Zootec.
Laske,Carlos Henrique; Teixeira,Bruno Borges Machado; Dionello,Nelson José Laurino; Cardoso,Fernando Flores.
The objectives of this study were to define breeding objectives and derive economic weights for production traits in family-based beef cattle systems, assess the sensitivity of these weights to changes in market and husbandry indicators and estimate the expected genetic changes in the selection criteria proposed. Based on data from the production systems, farms revenues and expenses, obtained from interviews and meetings with producers, a bioeconomic model was derived, relating biological traits of animals with the financial result of the production system based on calf-crop, selling male calves and culling cows for finishing. Traits considered in the model as breeding goals were weaning rate,

Efficiency of calf production of cows from two genetic groups R. Bras. Zootec.
Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vinhas; Euclides Filho,Kepler; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Ítavo,Camila Celeste Brandão Ferreira; Nogueira,Ériklis; Dias,Alexandre Menezes.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of weight, age and production efficiency of cows from genetic groups based on the calf weight at calving and at weaning. For a period of five years, data of 120 cows (60 Angus-Nellore (AN) and 60 Simmental-Nellore (SN)) at four to nine-years of age were evaluated. All cows were maintained on Brachiaria decumbens pastures, with two forage availability levels (high and low), distributed in a randomized-block design. The cows were placed together with Canchim bulls to generate the crossbred calves. A supplement, consisting of 200 g/kg crude protein and 820 g/kg of total digestible nutrients, was provided to the calves in creep feeding until 210 days-old (

Data from 79,884 Nellore breed animals were used to estimate genetic parameters and to evaluate the relationships among scores of conformation, precocity and musculature obtained at weaning and after yearling ages and weight of mature females. It was used the restricted maximum likelihood method in a multi-trait analysis with the model that included direct additive genetic and residual effects, as random effects, and the fixed effects of contemporary group and, as covariables, animal age at weighing and age of dam at calving (except for weight of females at adult age). Contemporary groups at weaning were defined by the variables: sex, herd, year and month of birth, and management group at...

Alternative parameterizations of relatedness in whole genome association analysis of pre-weaning traits of Nelore-Angus calves Genet. Mol. Biol.
Riley,David G.; Gill,Clare A.; Herring,Andy D.; Riggs,Penny K.; Sawyer,Jason E.; Sanders,James O..
Gestation length, birth weight, and weaning weight of F2 Nelore-Angus calves (n = 737) with designed extensive full-sibling and half-sibling relatedness were evaluated for association with 34,957 SNP markers. In analyses of birth weight, random relatedness was modeled three ways: 1) none, 2) random animal, pedigree-based relationship matrix, or 3) random animal, genomic relationship matrix. Detected birth weight-SNP associations were 1,200, 735, and 31 for those parameterizations respectively; each additional model refinement removed associations that apparently were a result of the built-in stratification by relatedness. Subsequent analyses of gestation length and weaning weight modeled...
