| A serological survey of Borrelia infection of dogs was performed in Sapporo, Japan, where Borrelia garinii infection in dogs was detected in 2011. A total of 314 serum samples were collected from dogs that visited three animal hospitals in Sapporo from 2012 to 2014. The two-step evaluation method, involving screening ELISA followed by Western blot analysis, was used to detect antibodies against Borrelia species. A total of 34 samples were positive by ELISA. Among those 34 samples, 32 were positive for Borrelia spp. by Western blot. These findings suggest that the 32 dogs (10.2%) generated antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, such as B. garinii or B. afzelii. | A nationwide survey of Babesia gibsoni using Haemaphysalis longicornis collected from dogs and cats in Japan was conducted using molecular methods. A total of 1,341 H. longicornis, including 305 females, 14 males, 332 nymphs and 690 larvae (153 pools) from 44 prefectures, were examined by B. gibsoni-targeted PCR. Partial sequence analysis revealed that 12 of 13 positive samples sequenced, including samples from Tottori, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tokushima, Ehime and Oita prefectures (all in western Japan), were identical to B. gibsoni, and 1 sample from Kyoto Prefecture was most closely related to a Babesia species recently detected from feral raccoons in Hokkaido. H. longicornis is a candidate for transmission vector tick of the new Babesia species. |

| 5 歳6 カ月齢ホルスタイン種乳牛が，後躯麻痺による起立不能を呈した．浅頸リンパ節の腫大と直腸検査による腫瘤 の触知から牛白血病を疑ったが，血液検査とリンパ節の針吸引生検では確定診断できなかった．剖検では，60 × 40 × 20cm 大の多結節性腫瘤が背側の腹腔壁に接して存在していた．腫瘍組織は腸腰筋に浸潤し，一部は第5 および第6 腰 椎椎間孔より脊柱管内に連続的に波及し，脊髄および脊髄神経根を圧迫していた．腫瘍はCD3 陽性のT細胞性リンパ 腫で，牛白血病ウイルス抗体陰性であったため，散発型牛白血病と診断された． A Holstein cow (5 years and 3 months old) presented with hind limb paresis and was unable to stand. | Serological methods were utilized to detect Anaplasma and Ehrlichia infection in domestic animals in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. By using an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), antibodies that reacted with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Ehrlichia chaffeensis were detected mainly in ruminants kept on pastureland in Altai, Ili and Kashgar area. Antibody titers up to 1:320 were recorded. These results indicate that ruminants kept in these areas may be infected with some species of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. |

| Bovine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder causing congestive heart failure and subsequent death. Recently, a nonsense mutation c.343C>T in the bovine optic atrophy 3 (OPA3) gene had been reported to cause the DCM in Holstein cattle in Switzerland. However, the mutation has not been confirmed in bovine DCM outside Switzerland. Nine Holstein Friesian cows that were macroscopically and histologically diagnosed with or suspected of DCM and 12 control cows kept in Japan were tested for the mutation. | To better understand the mechanism of excessive gas accumulation in the abomasum in bovine abomasal displacement, we performed gastric fluoroscopy in vagotomized cattle. Fifteen 6-month-old Holstein steers were divided into three groups: a non-vagotomized control group (Group C; n=5), a ventral thoraco-vagotomized group (Group V; n=5), and a dorsal and ventral thoraco-vagotomized group (Group DV; n=5). | A total of 87 Thoroughbred horses and 10 ixodid ticks from a ranch in Hidaka district, Hokkaido were tested for tick-borne diseases. Using the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) method, 3.4, 92.0 and 97.7% of the horses showed antibody titers of ≥80 against Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia helvetica, and Borrelia garinii, respectively. This is the first report of infection with the 3 pathogens in horses in Japan. Using PCR, DNAs from the peripheral blood of all horses were found negative with any Anaplasma, Rickettsia and Borrelia spp., while those from Haemaphysalis megaspinosa ticks were found positive for Anaplasma sp. closely related to A. phagocytophilum in Japan, and A. bovis. B. japonica was also detected in an H. flava tick for the first time. |

| We report here the non-contrast and contrast-enhanced computed tomography performed in two calves with brain abscess and multiple pulmonary abscesses with pharyngeal abscess, respectively. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography was useful in the diagnosis of these diseases in both calves. The diseases were confirmed by histopathological examination. |

| A 2-year-old East Friesian sheep imported from Australia exhibited severe anemia after contagious pustular dermatitis in Hokkaido, Japan. Hemoplasma infection was confirmed in blood smears. Both Mycoplasma ovis and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemovis’ were detected by PCR and sequence analyses. In the epidemiological analysis, dual pathogens were detected in 6 of 12 (50.0%) sheep imported from Australia with the infected ewe at the same time, 1 of 5 (20.0%) sheep introduced from a domestic farm in Hokkaido, and in 1 of 16 (6.3%) sheep from an epidemiologically unrelated ranch. It is the first clinical case of sheep to confirm coinfection of these pathogens in Japan. |

| 19歳齢のペルシュロン種繁殖雌馬に血尿が認められた。血尿は止血剤および抗生剤投与によっては改善され なかった。患畜は次第に元気食欲の低下、削痩、貧血を呈し、高度蛋白尿および胸前部冷性浮腫が発現した。 直腸検査により人頭大に腫大した左腎を触知し、腎臓腫瘍を疑った。病理解剖の結果、左腎は27X18Xl0cmに 腫大し、血液に富む巨大な腫瘤形成(13X8X8cm)を認めた。左腎門リンパ節は腫大し、また右腎臓、左右 副腎、肝臓および肺では大小の白色腫瘤を認めた。病理組織学的検査によりこれらの腫瘍はいずれも浸潤性に 増殖する上皮性腫瘍組織であったことから、本症例は腎細胞癌が他の複数の臓器に転移したものと考察した。 |

| The clinical usefulness of antibodies against Babesia gibsoni detected by ELISA with recombinant P50 was examined in dogs in an area where B. gibsoni infection was endemic. Only 8 among 14 dogs with acute type B. gibsoni infection without a previous history of infection were positive. This high percentage of false-negative results is thought to be a weak point of ELISA as a diagnostic tool. However, 14 other anemic dogs with a confirmed history of B. gibsoni infection were all positive, thus confirming the higher sensitivity of ELISA in detecting a history of infection. |

| ホルスタイン雄子牛が起立不能、努力性呼吸、チアノーゼを呈した。また、心雑音も聴取されたことから先天性心疾患を疑った。心音図検査より左側第2～3肋間の心基底部を最強点とする拡張期雑音および収縮前期雑音が確認された。心エコー検査では大動脈騎乗と心室中隔欠損が認められ、また肺動脈領域には著しく拡張した流出路と弁の閉鎖不全が認められた。動脈血液ガス検査では、酸素分圧26．25mmHg、酸素飽和度は測定限界の60％未満という著しい低値が認められた。病理解剖により高位心室中隔欠損、卵円孔開存および右心室壁の高度肥厚が認められた。また、心臓からは左右の心室腔へ騎乗する拡張した大動脈だけが起始し、肺動脈は閉鎖していた。以上の所見から本症例はファロー五徴極型と診断された。 |

| 放牧中のl歳7カ月齢ホルスタイン種育成午が、発熱、頻脈、心音強勢、収縮期雑音、頚静脈怒張、肺音粗 励、右後肢跛行の症状を呈した。心臓超音波検査により肺動脈弁に付着する疣贅物、心室中隔欠損、大動脈騎 乗などの所見が得られた。病理解剖検査では、これらの所見のほかに右後肢の関節炎が確認され、心室中隔欠 損と大動脈騎乗の心奇形個体に関節炎由来の細菌性心内膜炎を併発したものと考えられた。肺動脈弁の疣贅物からは嫌気培養によりPeptostreptococcus anaerobiusが分離された。 |
