We first describe the mitigation potential of various farming practices. Many of the most promising practices are common to organic agriculture, thus suggesting considerable mitigation potential for this farming system. Mitigation in agriculture needs to be assessed beyond the level of single farming practices, though. This is best illustrated with the topics “fertilizers” and “animal husbandry”. Optimization of fertilizer use necessitates optimization of the soil-fertilizer system as a whole and thus the assessment of the links between fertilizer types, crop rotations, tillage and soil carbon sequestration. Optimization of animal husbandry needs a global view, duly accounting for life-cycle emissions of feed production when investigating the effect of... |
