Five cruises were made between October 1998 and April 1999 in order to improve the knowledge about the fish fauna of the upper continental slope in the Colombian Caribbean, as a part of the project “INVEMAR MACROFAUNA I”. A total of 80 trawls were made during five cruises between October of 1998 and April of 1999, distributed along of the ecoregions of Guajira, Palomino, Tayrona , Magdalena, Morrosquillo, and Darién, along the continental slope of the Colombian Caribbean between 200 and 525 m depth using a semi-balloon trawling net. Nineteen species of the orders Albuliformes, Anguilliformes, Osmeriformes, Stomiiformes, Ateleopodiformes, Aulopiformes and Pleuronectiformes are reported for the first time from Colombian waters, and the presence of two others... |

Two specimens, 565 and 715 mm total length (TL), of the dusky snake eel, Ophichthus cylindroideus, collected southwest of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean, were examined. This species was not reported by Acero and Garzón-Ferreira (1995), then it is was not listed in the Colombian marine fishes data bases. However, McCosker et al. (1989) did examine one specimen (USNM 94755, 622 mm TL) from Puerto Colombia. External morphological and morphometric data are compared, as well as some osteology features. |

Between October and August 1999 five cruises were made on board of R/V Ancón, across the Colombian Caribbean slope, from Punta Estrella (Guajira), near the Venezuelan border, to Cabo Tiburón (Chocó), near the Panamá border. Eighty trawls were made between 200 and 500 m depth with a semi-balloon net. Twelve new records of fishes for the Colombian Caribbean in the orders Beryciformes, Zeiformes, Perciformes and Tetraodontiformes were collected. Plectranthias garrupellus (Serranidae), Benthodesmus tenuis and B. simonyi (Trichiuridae) are new records for the Caribbean; Diplospinnus multistriatus family (Gempylidae) is a new record for the southern Caribbean. |

The chaenopsine blennies are an homogeneous group which may be considered a subfamily of the Clinidae, since the existing evidence is not enough to give them familial status. The subfamily includes eight genera: Mccoskerichthys, Coralliozetus, Acanthemblemaria, Ekemblemaria, Emblemaria, Hemiemblemaria, Lucayablennius, and Chaenopsis. The nominal genera Protemblemaria and Emblemariopsis are herewith considered synonyms of Coralliozetus, since they share two derived characters: small size and sexual dimorphism in the color of the head, and are rather similar in several other characteristics. The división of the West Indian Zoogeographical Province made by Briggs (1974) is unnatural, since the fish fauna of Belize, Florida and the Bahamas is very similar. I... |
