Activity budget and social behavior of urban capuchin monkeys, Sapajus sp. (Primates: Cebidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Back,Janaína P.; Suzin,Adriane; Aguiar,Lucas M..
ABSTRACT Constant changes in natural environments impose challenges to wild animal populations, especially those that depend on social life. We gathered data on the activity budget and social interactions of a capuchin monkey (Sapajus sp.) group of 17 individuals confined to an urban green area receiving human food supplementation. We observed the capuchins between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, three days a month, between January 2012 and June 2013 (total of 530 hours of direct observations). We collected 15,208 behavioral records through instantaneous scan sampling and 2,538 events of social interaction in an adapted version of the “all occurrences” method. Activity budget of capuchins was dominated by traveling (42%) and foraging (38%), followed by feeding (10%),...

Tool use in urban populations of capuchin monkeys Sapajus spp. (Primates: Cebidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Aguiar,Lucas M.; Cardoso,Raphael M.; Back,Janaína P.; Carneiro,Eduarda C.; Suzin,Adriane; Ottoni,Eduardo B..
Capuchin monkeys, Sapajus Kerr, 1792, are known for their flexible behavior, including tool use, and their ability to survive in urban forests. We observed capuchin juveniles using wood as hammer and anvil and different materials as sponges (four tool-use events) in two geographically distinct urban populations in Brazil, in 2012: two in Goiânia, Central Brazil and two in Foz do Iguaçu, Southern Brazil. In Goiânia, a male used a detached tree branch as a hammer and a buttress root as an anvil to pound a seed of Terminalia Linnaeus. Another male used a small branch with leaves as a dipping tool to access water inside a tree trunk hole. In Foz do Iguaçu, the capuchins used a small branch and a piece of bread to obtain water by dipping them into tree trunk...

Tentativa de infanticídio por um macho dominante de Alouatta caraya (Humboldt) (Primates, Atelidae) em um infante extra-grupo devido a influência do observador Zoologia
Aguiar,Lucas M.; Ludwig,Gabriela; Hilst,Carmen L. S.; Malanski,Luciano S.; Passos,Fernando C..

Comparison of the diet of Alouatta caraya (Primates: Atelidae) between a riparian island and mainland on the Upper Parana River, southern Brazil Zoologia
Ludwig,Gabriela; Aguiar,Lucas M.; Svoboda,Walfrido K.; Hilst,Carmen L. S.; Navarro,Italmar T.; Vitule,Jean R. S.; Passos,Fernando C..
Howler monkeys (Alouatta Lacèpéde, 1799) are folivores-frugivores with flexible diets depending on conditions. Here, we compare the diets of Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812) in two riparian forests (island and mainland), in Porto Rico region, Upper Paraná River, Southern Brazil. Howlers were followed from October 2004 to September 2005 in the riparian forest of a 1,050 ha island and in the continuous riparian forest on the mainland (left bank of the river). The "scan sampling" method with instantaneous samples every 15 minutes was used. Besides vines, diet breadth was similar: 17 species consumed on the island versus 16 species on the mainland. Both consumed leaves followed by fruits more than any other food type (leaves: island - 65%, mainland - 49%,...

Feeding habits of the crab-eating fox, Cerdocyon thous (Carnivora: Canidae), in a mosaic area with native and exotic vegetation in Southern Brazil Zoologia
Rocha,Vlamir J.; Aguiar,Lucas M.; Silva-Pereira,José E.; Moro-Rios,Rodrigo F.; Passos,Fernando C..
Cerdocyon thous (Linnaeus, 1766) is the most widespread neotropical canid, most commonly inhabiting forested areas. This animal is a generalist omnivore that is able to use environments disturbed by human activities. The aim of this study was to describe its diet through the stomach content analysis of 30 samples obtained from specimens that were run over in a mosaic composed by Araucaria Pine Forest, Semidecidual Seasonal Forest, natural grasslands, and exotic vegetation. The items were quantified by frequency of occurrence (F.O.) and percentage of occurrence (P.O.). A total of 64 food items were found among 171 occurrences. According to F.O. method, plant items corresponded to 93.3% of the occurrences, followed by animal items (86.7%) and human rejects...

Occurrence, local extinction and conservation of Primates in the corridor of the Upper Paraná River, with notes on other mammals Zoologia
Aguiar,Lucas M.; Ludwig,Gabriela; Svoboda,Walfrido K.; Hilst,Carmen L. S.; Navarro,Italmar T.; Passos,Fernando C..
The region of Porto Rico, on the Upper Paraná River, is a contact zone between the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado, with elements of the Pantanal wetlands. During surveys from September 2003 to September to 2005, we recorded the presence of non-volant mammals on 14 islands and the adjacent riverbanks. Surveys were by foot and by boat, and we also interviewed local people about the mammals of the region. Sightings of three primate species - Cebus nigritus (Goldfuss, 1809) (left margin of the river), C. libidinosus Spix, 1823 (right margin) and Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812) (both margins and 12 islands) - were plotted on a satellite image. Alouatta clamitans Cabrera, 1940 was not recorded. However, interviews indicated that this species has occurred...

The first seven months of an infant of Alouatta guariba (Humboldt) (Primates, Atelidae): interactions and the development of behavioral patterns Zoologia
Miranda,João M. D.; Aguiar,Lucas M.; Ludwig,Gabriela; Moro-Rios,Rodrigo F.; Passos,Fernando C..
The development of the interactions of an infant primate with its mother and the other members of its social group plays a special role in the ethology and demography of the species, with consequences for their survive and their conservation. The objective of the present study is to investigate the development of an infant of Alouatta guariba (Humboldt, 1812) in the wild, its behavior and interactions during its first seven months of age, in a remnant of Araucaria Pine Forest in Paraná State, Brazil. Using the method of instantaneous scanning with 5 min intervals, a total of 46 hours and 15 minutes of direct observation (555 individual records) showed that the infant behavioral patterns during its first four months were characterized by high dependency,...

Comportamento de obtenção de Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae), mandioca, por Cebus nigritus (Goldfuss) (Primates, Cebidae) como uma adaptação alimentar em períodos de escassez Zoologia
Ludwig,Gabriela; Aguiar,Lucas M.; Rocha,Vlamir J..
