Lower export production during glacial periods in the equatorial Pacific derived from (Pa-231/Th-230)(xs,0) measurements in deep-sea sediments ArchiMer
Pichat, S; Sims, Kww; Francois, R; Mcmanus, Jf; Leger, Sb; Albarede, F.
The (Pa-231/Th-230)(xs,0) records obtained from two cores from the western (MD97-2138; 1degrees25'S, 146degrees24'E, 1900 m) and eastern (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 138 Site 849, 0degrees11.59'N, 110degrees31.18'W, 3851 m) equatorial Pacific display similar variability over the last 85,000 years, i.e., from isotopic stages 1 to 5a, with systematically higher values during the Holocene, isotopic stage 3, and isotopic stage 5a, and lower values, approaching the production rate ratio of the two isotopes (0.093), during the colder periods corresponding to isotopic stages 2 and 4. We have also measured the Th-230-normalized biogenic preserved and terrigenous fluxes, as well as major and trace elements concentrations, in both cores. The (Pa-231/Th-230)(xs,0)...

Campagne theahitia 1: Geologie d'un point chaud actif: Theahitia-Mehetia, iles de la Societe (Pacifique Central Sud) ArchiMer
Cheminee, J-l; Hekinian, Roger; Talandier, J; Albarede, F; Devey, C W; Francheteau, Jean; Lancelot, Y.
The Teahitia-Mehetia hot spot region located in the southeastern extension of the Society Islands chain, near 18 degree S-148 degree W, consists of several active volcanoes. The distribution of recent volcanic activity correlates with seismic epicenters, and covers an area of more than 1,000 km super(2). Intermittent volcanic activity has given rise to large (> 1,000 m high) and small (< 500 m high) edifices composed of various types of flows. Several recent volcanic events have produced a suite of alkalic rocks ranging from ankaramites, through alkali basalts to trachy-phonolites. The presence of altered MORB-like tholeiites on one small seamount suggests that a different mantle source material was involved in forming some of the crust in this hot...

Multiparametric investigation of North Sea particulate matter. Preliminary results in the Skagerrak ArchiMer
Boust, D; Dupont, J P; Bienvenu, P; Ezat, U; Lafite, R; Leboulanger, T; Vinchon, C; Albarede, F.
During the Tramanor cruise, in July 1988, seawater and particle samples were collected along a vertical profile (530 m depth) located in the Skagerrak, a crossing-area for different water-masses and particle pools. A sampling strategy was developed to ensure the homogeneity of the different sets of subsamples subjected to analysis by closely-coupled complementary techniques: turbidimetry, granulometry, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations, Tracor analyses, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements, and neutron activation analysis (NAA). The Baltic outflow is found in the topmost 20 m water-column (salinity approximately equals 23.5; temperature approximately equals 18 degree C) overlying North Sea waters (salinity approximately equals...
