ANALYZING THE PERCEIVED IMPACT OF ISO 9000 STANDARDS ON U.S. AGRIBUSINESSES SITES AgEcon
Mumma, Gerald A.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C.; Abdulkadri, Abdullahi O.; Mugalla, Constance Ileko.
We used a non-competitive market framework to assess the perceived impact of ISO 9000 standards on the operational efficiency of registered U.S. agribusiness sites. Kendall Coefficient of Concordance, W, was used to rank selected reasons for seeking registration to ISO 9000 standards. The results indicated that registered sites seem to be achieving their goals for registration.

AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR U.S. AGRIBUSINESS SITES REGISTERED TO ISO 9000 SERIES OF STANDARDS AgEcon
Mumma, Gerald A.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C..
A factor analysis examined underlying relationships of selected performance indicators for U.S. ISO 9000-registered agribusiness sites. The factoring technique uniquely identified five of six primary factors-namely, improved quality performance, better training of personnel and document control, product prices, external audits, and cost of nonconformity. A sixth ill-defined factor is also identified. Each identified factor could influence the market position and/or profitability of an ISO 9000 registered agribusiness site.

Increased Cocoa Bean Exports under Trade Liberalization: A Gravity Model Approach AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Shaik, Saleem; Wozniak, Shawn J.; Allen, Albert J..
Gravity models were developed to estimate the potential bilateral exports of cocoa under trade liberalization by the sixteen major cocoa producing countries to the US using panel data from 1989 to 2003. The results indicate that differences between resource endowment, relative size of economies, and the sum of bilateral GDP of U.S. and exporting countries are the major determinants. Thus, as trade is liberalized, farmers share of the world price of cocoa increases and this raises exports.

An Analysis of Trends in Food Import Refusals in the United States AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Myles, Albert E.; Shaik, Saleem; Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman.
Millions of pounds of fresh fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, and other agricultural and food products enter the United States via commercial shipments from other countries every year. Although these items appear harmless, there could be hidden threats in that baggage and in those truckloads, trainloads, and containers of fresh and processed food items that could seriously threaten U.S. agriculture, its natural resources, and its economy (U.S. Customs and Border Protection 2007). Food imports play a major role in the success and competitiveness of various agribusiness firms in the United States. For example, food imports generate income, employment, output, and taxes and provide consumers with lower-priced products than those produced or purchased in...

Trade Effects of the Central American Free Trade Agreement AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Shaik, Saleem; Allen, Albert J.; Ofori-Boadu, Victor.
Proponents of DR-CAFTA argue the RTA will free the U.S. agricultural sector of these disadvantages by leveling the field through the removal of these tariffs and in many cases, create preferences for U.S. exporters over third country suppliers, including those in Canada, Europe, and South America, helping to restore lost U.S. market share and expand overall U.S. exports. In this paper, we develop gravity models to estimate and predict the potential bilateral trade flows between U.S. and CAFTA countries using panel data. In the course of the study, it was expected that if DR-CAFTA were to have an effect, all countries under the agreement should be trade creators. All the six CAFTA countries but one (Costa Rica) are trade creators. The amount trade...

Efficiency Measure in Nitrogen Management under U.S. Trade Induced Corn Production AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Gunden, Cihat; Allen, Albert J.; Akuffo, Akua S..
The overall objective of this paper is to measure the impact of the undesirable outputs from NAFTA (agricultural production and trade) on the environment by years in post-NAFTA period. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to measure environmental efficiency by considering desirable (corn production) and undesirable (nitrogen) outputs in fifteen states. DEA allowed us to measure the level of nitrogen pollution to be reduced by modeling undesirable output in efficiency evaluation. Data from 15 states (Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin) on corn production, land use and nitrogen fertilizer from 1994-2008 (post-NAFTA) were considered. The...

EFFICIENT MARKETING OF BLUEBERRIES IN MISSISSIPPI AND LOUISIANA AgEcon
Muhammad, Safdar; Allen, Albert J..
Fresh blueberries are sold through a marketing cooperative of the blueberry industry in Mississippi and Louisiana. Blueberry producers have numerous alternatives in assembling blueberries, and the cooperative needs to know the costs of different systems for assembling berries in order to provide better services to its members. The main objective of this study was to determine an efficient system for handling blueberries in Mississippi and Louisiana. Sixteen models with different combinations of drop stations and shipping points were evaluated. The results of this study will help the Miss-Lou Association and farmers to better develop strategies for handling and marketing blueberries in the future. It will assist the Miss-Lou Association in determining the...

IMPACT OF NAFTA ON U.S. CORN TRADE AgEcon
Chowdhury, A.A. Farhad; Allen, Albert J..
The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of NAFTA vis-a-vis other domestic and environmental forces in corn trading between U.S. and Mexico, and between U.S. and Canada. Pre- and Post-NAFTA comarison indicates that there has been a significant increase in corn trade in the post-NAFTA era. Regression analysis could not provide conclusive evidence that such increase was solely due to NAFTA. Economic crisis of severe drought in Mexico, domestic policy reforms such as cut in government's price support and withdrawal of ban on feeding corn to livestock may have contributed in the increased volume of corn trade in the post-NAFTA era.

MARKET STRUCTURE, MARKET SHARE, AND PROFITS IN THE SURFACE FREIGHT INDUSTRY AgEcon
Kari, Fatimah; Jaafar, Abdul H.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C..
The surface freight industry was deregulated in 1980. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between profitability and market power in the trucking industry that transport agricultural commodities. Fulfilling this objective would allow us to determine whether the market structure that has emerged is one that is based on competition. The research method will be based on the structure-conduct-performance paradigm. Results of this study indicated that efficiency is the driving force behind performance of firms. These suggest that the 1980 Motor Carrier Act had produced its intended purpose in the agricultural commodities transport industry.

Exchange Rates Impacts on Agricultural Inputs Prices using VAR AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Shaik, Saleem; Allen, Albert J..
The effects of the U.S. dollar exchange rate versus the Mexican peso are evaluated for four traded nonfarm-produced inputs (fertilizer, chemicals, farm machinery, and feed) in the U.S. Unit root tests suggest that the exchange rate and the four input price ratios support the presence of unit roots with a trend model but the presence unit roots can be rejected in the first difference model. This result is consistent with a fixed price/flex price conceptual framework, with industrial prices more likely to be unresponsive to the exchange rate than farm commodity prices.

Market Structure Conduct Performance (SCP) Hypothesis Revisited using Stochastic Frontier Efficiency Analysis AgEcon
Edwards, Seanicaa; Allen, Albert J.; Shaik, Saleem.
Use of efficiency measures as a proxy for performance to test the market structure-conduct-performance (SCP) hypothesis is explored. Utilizing Battese and Coelli specification, we estimate stochastic frontier production function and SCP equations with output and efficiency measures as endogenous variables. An empirical application to U.S. trucking carries over the period 1994-2003 with emphasis on the agricultural commodity and refrigerated food products carriers is examined. Results reveal that the variables average haul, average load and market concentration significantly affected the efficiency of firms with 2-8 number of years within each firm.

U.S. CORN MOVEMENTS, 1985: A PRELIMINARY REPORT OF DATA AgEcon
Fruin, Jerry E.; Halbach, Daniel Walter; Hill, Lowell D.; Allen, Albert J..
This paper presents the results of the corn portion of the 1985 grain flow survey and makes comparisons with 1977 when the previous survey was done. The most significant change from 1977 was the increase in exports from the Pacific Northwest ports from 15 million bushels to over 290 million in 1985. This was accomplished by an increase in rail shipments from Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The decline in European Economic Community demand reduced corn movements through the Great Lakes and Atlantic ports and, consequently, truck movements to those ports. Trucks increased their share of domestic movements. The large 1985 corn crop and subsequent increase in stocks reduced the volume of interstate movements and the length of shipping distances....
