Air-sea CO2 fluxes in a coastal embayment affected by upwelling: physical versus biological control ArchiMer
Alvarez, M; Fernandez, E; Perez, Ff.
Water column pCO(2) and air-sea CO2 fluxes were studied during an 18-month period (May 1994-September 1995) in a coastal embayment affected by upwelling, located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula (Ria de Vigo and adjacent shelf). Overall, the region acted as a net annual atmospheric CO, sink, with magnitude ranging from 0.54 mgC m(-2) d(-1) in the Ria estuary to 22 mgC m(-2) d(-1) offshore. During moderate upwelling and upwelling relaxation conditions the sampling area was a sink for atmospheric CO2. By contrast, during winter conditions and during intense upwelling the flux reversed towards the atmosphere. The relative influence of physical and biological processes on pCO(2) was evaluated using two different approaches: firstly, statistical analysis...

Transports across the 2002 Greenland-Portugal Ovide section and comparison with 1997 - art. no. C07003 ArchiMer
Lherminier, Pascale; Mercier, Herle; Gourcuff, Claire; Alvarez, M; Bacon, S; Kermabon, Catherine.
The first Ovide cruise occurred in June-July 2002 on R/V Thalassa between Greenland and Portugal. The absolute transports across the Ovide line are estimated using a box inverse model constrained by direct acoustic Doppler current profiler velocity measurements and by an overall mass balance (+/-3 Sv, where 1 Sv = 10(6) m(3) s(-1)) across the section. Main currents are studied and compared to the results of the similar Fourex section performed in August 1997 and revisited here. The meridional overturning cell (MOC) is estimated in two different ways, both leading to a significantly lower value in June 2002 than in August 1997, consistent with the relative strength of the main components of the MOC (North Atlantic Current and deep western boundary current)....

Nutrient mineralization rates and ratios in the eastern South Atlantic - art. no. C05030 ArchiMer
Brea, Samenta; Alvarez Salgado, X; Alvarez, M; Perez, F; Memery, L; Mercier, Herle; Messias, M.j..
The physical and biogeochemical components of nutrients and inorganic carbon distributions along WOCE line A14 are objectively separated by means of a constrained least-squares regression analysis of the mixing of eastern South Atlantic water masses. Contrary to previous approaches, essentially devoted to the intricate South Atlantic circulation, this work is focused on the effects of circulation on nutrients and carbon biogeochemistry, with special emphasis on the stoichiometry and the rate of mineralization processes. Combination of nutrient and apparent CFC-age anomalies, derived from the mixing analysis, indicate faster mineralization rates in the equatorial (12 x 10(-2) mumol P kg(-1) yr(-1)) and subequatorial (5.3 x 10(-2) mumol P kg(-1) yr(-1)) than...
