Analysis of the Lingula Shapes in Macerated Mandibles of Brazilian Individuals International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Deana,Naira Figueiredo.
The lingula of the mandible is a bone projection that limits medially the mandibular foramen, which is the region where the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle penetrates. The lingula is an important anatomical landmark used in maxillofacial surgeries and to block the inferior alveolar nerve. The aim of this study was to analyze the different types of lingula found in mandibles of Brazilian individuals, considering aspects such as gender and race. One hundred thirty-two macerated mandibles of Brazilian adult individuals of both sexes, black and white skin colors, were used. The lingula was classified into four types: triangular, truncated, nodular and assimilated. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. The truncated shape...

Alves,Nilton; Garay,Ivonne; Deana,Naira Figueiredo.

Third molar extraction surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures in the areas of buccal-maxillofacial traumatology and surgery. The post-surgery evolution was evaluated based on the clinical evidence obtained so far. The objective of this study was to analyze the post-surgery clinical evolution of the masseter muscle by means of surface electromyography, to evaluate muscle activity. Four analyses were performed: one pre-surgery, to register the normal activity, and three in post-surgery: on the 7th, 14th and 21st postoperative days, in a sample of 30 patients. On the 21st day, there was near normal recovery of the electrical signal of the masseter in women, but in men this activity did not reach normal levels. Surface electromyography is a...

Study of Frequency of the Palmaris Longus Musclem in Chilean Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Ramírez,Daysi; Figueiredo Deana,Naira.
The palmaris longus muscle (PLM) lies on the anterior region of the forearm, it is considered one of the most variable muscles in the human body, and its agenesis is the most frequent anatomic variation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of the PLM tendon in Chilean adults and also, to verify the agenesis symmetry according to sex. For this, we have analyzed the presence of the PLM tendon in 200 Chilean individuals, 114 female and 86 male. In this study, three different tests were used: Schaeffer's Test, Mishra's First Test and Thompson's Test. The obtained data were tabled and analyzed. It could be observed that 91% of the individuals had the PLM muscle tendon in at least one of the forearms and 80% in both forearms. The unilateral...

Study of Descendent Course of Buccal Nerve in Adults Individuals International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton.
The knowledge of the buccal nerve anatomy is of fundamental importance not only for the anesthesia but also for a safe intervention in the retromolar area. The aim of this work was to study its trajectory, in the area where it is related to the anterior margin of the ramus of the mandible, therefore providing important data for a safe intervention in the region. In this study we used 10 hemi-heads from male and female adults, from different ethnic groups. They were fixed in formol, and belong to the Anatomy Laboratory at the Faculty of Dentistry in Araraquara UNESP. These hemi-heads were dissected by lateral access, preserving the buccal nerve in its trajectory related to the anterior margin of the ramus of the mandible until its penetration in the...

Ceballos,Francisco; González,Javier; Hernández,Pamela; Deana,Naira; Alves,Nilton.
The mental foramen (MF), located in the body of mandible in the region below the inferior premolars, is the anatomical structure through which the mental neurovascular bundle emerges. The MF can be seen clearly in panoramic X-rays. The object of the present study was to carry out a literature review in order to identify the frequency and position of the MF in panoramic X-rays. We looked for articles in the SCiELO, Pubmed, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science and EBSCOhost databases, for the years 2006 to 2016. The key words used were "mental foramen", "mandibular canal", "inferior alveolar nerve", "anatomy" and "panoramic X-ray". Once the articles had been selected, an analysis was made of their methodological quality; poor-quality articles were excluded. In...

Cleidocranial Dysplasia: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Oliveira,Reinaldo de.
The cleidocranial dysplasia is a rare disease which can occur either spontaneously or by a dominant autosomal inheritance, with no predilection of genre or ethnic group. The odontologist is, most of the times, the first professional who patients look for to solve the problem, since there is a delay in the eruption and /or an absence of permanent teeth. In the case related in this work, this was the reason why the patient looked for treatment. Many others odontological problems are also present in this syndrome, such as, supernumerary teeth, retained teeth, with shape deviation and absence of deciduous teeth resorption. The premature diagnosis allows a proper orientation for the treatment, offering a better life quality for the patient.

Morphometric Study of the Dental Roots of Permanent Lower Anterior Teeth in Brazilian Individuals International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton.
The knowledge of dental morphometry, especially of its radicular portion, is of great importance for certain dental specialties, such as, endodonty. Regarding the permanent lower anterior teeth we know that its morphology and root length, are variable. The aim of this study was to analyze the average length of the dental roots of permanent lower anterior teethin Brazilian individuals. The average root length obtained in this study for the lower central incisors was 13.07 mm; to lower canines the value found was 15.81 mm; the average value for the radicular portion of lower lateral incisors was 13.08 mm. We conclude that the mean value for the length of the radicular portion of permanent lower central incisors is similar to that found for permanent lower...

Study About the Development of the Temporomandibular Joint in the Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized articulation that differs from all the other synovial articulations for many reasons. In children, different from what we observe in adults, these articulations have rarely been studied under the morphofunctional aspect, mainly in the embryonary and fetal stages. In this study 10 fetuses with ages varying from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life were used, and it could be observed that the fibers and thickness of the articular disc, as well as the articular capsule and the condylar process, suffer modifications according to age. It was also observed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle inserts itself in the articular disc and capsule in all the ages studied. Also, the maturation of...

Dental Gemination in the Inferior Canine in Both Dentition: Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Nascimento,Carlos Manuel de Oliveira; Patriarca,Juvenal João.
Geminate teeth are anomalies arising from the attempt of the division of a only one germ, characterized by invagination and resulting in incomplete formation of two teeth. In general, it presents two crowns, totally or partially separated, with one root and one root canal. Female patient, 8 years old, Asian descent (Chinese), attended a private clinic (Odemira Dental Clinic) in Odemira, Portugal, for a routine consult. At intraoral clinical examination differentiated coronary anatomy, of the tooth 83 was found , with the presence of a bifid crown in which there was a central groove that came from the cemento-enamel junction. The radiographic exam revealed the presence of only one wide root canal, and two separate pulp cavities, each one corresponding to a...

Insertion of the Superior Head of the Lateral Pterigoid Muscle in the Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Altruda Filho,Luiz; Alves,Nilton.
The lateral pterygoid muscle, more specifically its superior head, as we know, is closely related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Particularly in children, in contrast with what was observed in adults, these joints have been rarely studied, by the anatomic functional aspect, little knowing about its functions in the embryonic and fetal periods. We used, in this work, 12 fetuses ranging in age from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life, where we observed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle is inserted in the disc and in the articular capsule, in all age groups studied, and also, that the fibers and the thickness of the articular disc is, as well as the articular capsule suffer modifications in accordance with the period of development

INNERVATION OF THE PRONATOR TERES MUSCLE International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Cândido,Paulo Laino; Frazão,Renata.
The pronator quadratus is the principal muscle responsible for pronation of forearm, helped by the pronator teres. To study the innervation of the pronator teres, eighteen forearms from a formol fixed corpses were dissected and the relationship of the median nerve to the pronator teres was examined. The elbow articular line was used as reference point. In all cases the most branches of the median nerve to the pronator teres began in the arm distal third part, whereas the most branches penetrated at the distal half of the forearm proximal third part (75% in right upper limb and 75.8% in left upper limb). The treatment of pronator syndrome could be making easier with the knowledge of the anatomical distribution of nerves

Frequency of Occurence of the Discomalleolar Ligament in the Adult Man International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Deana,Naira Figueiredo.
The discomaleollar ligament is not described in the anatomy textbooks but was demonstrated by Pinto (1962) and others. It is a ligamentous structure connecting the malleus in the tympanic cavity and the articular disc and the capsule of the temporomandibular joint. This anatomical relationship between the middle ear and temporomandibular joint is supposed to be one of the explanations for the otological symptons associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of occurence of the discomaleollar ligament. Twenty hemi-heads of adults human were carefully dissected from a superior approach through the middle cranial fossa. The bone of the middle cranial fossa over the temporomandibular joint region and...

Incisive Fossa Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton.
The importance of the radiographic anatomy knowledge in the interpretation of the pathologies is undeniable. The base of this knowledge is a great familiarity with the anatomy of the region that is going to be evaluated. Thus, it is important to recognize what is considered normal, as well as the anatomical variations, so that one can identify what is pathologic. In this case report we describe a radiographic finding in leucoderm patient, 13 years old and one month, submitted to a panoramic radiography in a private clinic in São Paulo - Brazil, for evaluation of the third molars. During the radiographic reading, a bilateral radiolucid area with an inverted tear shape could be observed in the region between the roots of the lateral incisive teeth and upper...
