Pathways out of poverty through secondary crops and private sector processing as well as institutional arrangements in Viet Nam AgEcon
Anh, Dao The; Thinh, Le Duc; Binh, Vu Trong; Huan, Dao Duc.
In Viet Nam, the diversification of CGPRT crops is the main thrust of poverty alleviation in remote and mountainous areas with new opportunities in the market. However, the sustainable development of these commodity chains is in question due to the lack of integrated policy for value chain development and assuring the participation of the poor in the value chains. Two case studies of cassava and maize commodity chains respectively in Yen Bai and Son La provinces suggest ways to encompass these challenges of diversification.

The Participation of the Poor in Supermarket-driven chains in Vietnam AgEcon
Moustier, Paule; Figue, Muriel; Anh, Dao The; Tam, Phan Thi Giac; Binh, Vu Trong; tan Loc, Nguyen Thi.
In Vietnam, the marketing of fruits and vegetables is characterized by a diversity of distribution chains that includes formal markets, street vendors, shops and supermarkets. Presently, the government is promoting the expansion of supermarket distribution and eliminating all informal trade. The study investigates the hypothesis that due to the use of labor-saving and capital intensive technologies employed by supermarkets, poorer segments of the population may be excluded from potential benefits. Surveys of poor consumers' access to different retailing points were made in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Case studies built around vegetable, lychee and flavored rice chains based on in-depth interviews with representative samples of stakeholders along the chains...

Tam, Phan Thi Giac; Anh, Dao The; Moustier, Paule; Binh, Vu Trong; Thi, Nguyen; Loc, Tan.
The development of supermarkets in Vietnam, as in other emerging countries, goes along with an increasing concern on the part of purchasers for food quality. The paper investigates whether farmer organisations are able to help small-scale farmers get access to supermarkets, and the role that supermarkets and public support play in their emergence and development. It is based on case studies involving a number of stakeholders marketing vegetables, flavoured rice and litchi fruit in Vietnam. The interviews investigated patterns of horizontal and vertical coordination that link farmers to supermarkets, the distribution of costs and benefits between farmers and traders along the chains in relation to the strategy of quality differentiation. Eight farmer...

Harnessing local underused crops to improve household nutrition and income opportunities in Vietnam: case of Hoa vang sticky rice in Red river delta AgEcon
Jaenicke, Hannah; Anh, Dao The; Cong Nghiep, Pham.
The project ‘Coalition to Diversify Income through Underused Crops’ (CoDI) operates in Vietnam and India since 2008. The project supports local communities in the production, processing and marketing of neglected crops – local grains, fruits and vegetables. Those varieties have close relation with local territory. An evaluation of the situation of previous activities in India and Vietnam showed that the key weaknesses were: • Demonstrations were not enough and too far away and too far apart. • Post-harvest handling and processing methods suggested were too complicated. • No financial support was provided. • Not enough training courses were offered and access to information was limited. The main question was how to help farmers to produce indigenous species...
