Bioassay for detection of transgenic soybean seeds tolerant to glyphosate PAB
Torres,Antonio Carlos; Nascimento,Warley Marco; Paiva,Sonia Alessandra Vasconcelos; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de.
Glyphosate is a systemic, nonselective, postemergence herbicide that inhibits growth of both weeds and crop plants. Once inside the plant, glyphosate interferes with biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan, by inhibiting the activity of 5enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), a key enzyme of the shikimate pathway. The objective of this work was to develop a simple, effective and inexpensible method for identification of transgenic soybean tolerant to glyphosate. This technique consisted in germinating soybean seeds in filter paper moistened with 100 to 200 muM of glyphosate. Transgenic soybean seeds tolerant to glyphosate germinated normally in this solution and, between 7 and 10 days, started to develop a...

Pollination requirements of seeded and seedless mini watermelon varieties cultivated under protected environment PAB
Bomfim,Isac Gabriel Abrahão; Bezerra,Antônio Diego de Melo; Nunes,Alexandre Campos; Freitas,Breno Magalhães; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the floral biology and pollination requirements of seeded and seedless mini watermelon varieties, and to determine the best varieties to cultivate under protected environment. Three seedless (HA-5106, HA-5158, and HA-5161) and two seeded (Minipol and Polimore) genotypes were tested. Flowers were monitored from the pre-anthesis stage to senescence, and fruit quality was also evaluated. The evaluated treatments were hand-geitonogamous pollination (MG), cross-pollination with pollen from the Polimore variety (MCP), cross-pollination with pollen from the Minipol variety (MCM), and restricted pollination. All varieties had monoecious plants with diclinous flowers, and the stigmas remained receptive throughout anthesis....

Method for evaluating rhizoctonia resistance in melon germplasm Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Gefferson Thiago Mota de Almeida; Oliveira,Frederico Inácio Costa de; Carvalho,Alexya Vitoria Felix; André,Thais Paz Pinheiro; Silva,Christiana de Fátima Bruce da; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de.
ABSTRACT The intensive cultivation of melon, mainly in the Northeast of Brazil, has favored the occurrence of root diseases such as rhizoctonia, caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. The use of resistant cultivars is one of the most efficient strategic measures for integrated management of diseases in this crop. It is necessary to use an efficient inoculation method to evaluate rhizoctonia in melon germplasm with the aim of identifying sources of resistance. The objective of this study was to develop an efficient method to inoculate the pathogen to proceed in selection of R. solani resistant melon germplasm. Five experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions to define the adequate container, growth environment, substrate for inoculum...

Apis mellifera discrimination between flowers of commercial types of melon and implications to crop pollination Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Fernandes,Nayanny de Sousa; Pinto,Gercy Soares; Zocolo,Guilherme Julião; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de; Freitas,Breno Magalhães.
ABSTRACT We investigated the foraging pattern of A. mellifera in five commercial types of melon (Yellow, Cantaloupe, Charentais, Galia and Piel de Sapo) grown side by side. We also observed if this bee species can discriminate between flowers of the five melon types and if it shows preference for flowers of any of them. Results showed that the bees visit flowers of all types of melon throughout the day collecting pollen and nectar in similar foraging patterns. However, they visited significantly more flowers of the Cantaloupe type followed by the types Piel de Sapo and Yellow, while the melons type Galia and Charentais were the least visited by the bees. This behavior has implications for the use of A. mellifera for melon pollination, requiring that the...

Castro,Ana Cecília Ribeiro de; Willadino,Lilia Gomes; Loges,Vivian; Castro,Mario Felipe Arruda de; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de.
The objective of this study was to characterize nutritional deficiencies in Heliconia psittacorum x Heliconia spathocircinata 'Golden Torch', through growth indicators, symptomatology and macronutrients contents in leaves and underground plant part. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, with eight treatments comprising complete nutrition solution (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S), solution with individual nutrient omission of N, P, K, Ca, Mg or S and solution lacking all nutrients. The symptoms of nutrients deficiency appeared in the following occurrence order: N, K, P, Mg and S. Deficiency symptoms were: general chlorosis to - N omission; slight chlorosis to - P and - S; dark green leaves and necrosis to - K; marginal chlorosis and necrosis to - Mg. Calcium...

Caracterização de frutos de genótipos de muricizeiros cultivados no litoral cearense Rev. Ciênc. Agron.

Genetic divergence of Anthurium affine germplasm using morphoagronomic and molecular descriptors Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Maia,Clara Yohana; Soares,Nazaré Suziane; Castro,Ana Cecília Ribeiro; Queirós,João Ravelly Alves de; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de; Bordallo,Patricia do Nascimento.
ABSTRACT Anthurium affine is an ornamental Brazilian native plant very appreciated due to its long-lasting durability. To explore the genetic diversity available, 21 A. affine half-sibling progeny were evaluated using morphoagronomic and molecular descriptors. The morphoagronomic descriptors used were: plant height, plant diameter, growth habit, leaf number, leaf blade length, leaf blade width, petiole length, petiole diameter, leaf margin undulation, general appearance; soil cover rate and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers the molecular one. All the descriptors within the progeny showed variability and general appearance, leaf margin undulation and soil cover rate are the ones that most contribute to the plants divergence. From 45 RAPD...

Cavalcante Neto,José Galdino; Ferreira,Karmita Thainá Correia; Aragão,Fernando Antonio Souza de; Antônio,Rafaela Priscila; Nunes,Glauber Henrique de Sousa.
ABSTRACT: Melon or muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) is of considerable economic importance in Brazil. Nearly all the cultivars currently grown are hybrids. Heterosis has been used to advantage in the melon plant, and the use of uniform hybrids is one of the reasons for successful cultivation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the agronomic potential of yellow melon lines and hybrids. An experiment was conducted in randomized blocks with three replications to evaluate 24 hybrids generated by crosses among three elite lines used as female parents (AF-01, AF-02, and AF-03) and eight lines used as male parents (LAM-01, LAM-02, LAM-03, LAM-04, LAM-05, LAM-06, LAM-07, and LAM-08). Yield and fruit quality traits were evaluated. Partial diallel analysis was...
