Effects of Changes in Income on Changes in Consumption: An Empirical Investigation for Illinois Farm Households AgEcon
Durguner, Sena; Ellinger, Paul N.; Arends-Kuenning, Mary.
Using repeated cross section data, this study identifies how changes in income (defined over different ranges of income change) affect changes of farm household consumption. OLS regression confirms that the number of members within a farm household positively affects changes of consumption at the 1% significance level, and households with children compared to childless households are recognized to have lower change of consumption at the 5% significance level. In addition, households that experience income increases of more than 50% have higher changes of consumption compared to households who face an income decrease of more than 50% at the 1% significance level. However, no significant change of consumption is found for households with income changes...

Measuring the Effect of Education and Influence on Female Employment and Empowerment: Evidence from India AgEcon
Kandpal, Eeshani; Baylis, Katherine R.; Arends-Kuenning, Mary.
This paper shows that participation in a community-level female empowerment program in India significantly increases access to employment, physical mobility, and political participation. The program provides support groups, literacy camps, adult education classes, and vocational training. We use truncation-corrected matching and instrumental variables on primary data to disentangle the program's mechanisms, separately considering its effect on women who work, and those who do not work but whose reservation wage is increased by participation. We also find significant spillover effects on non-participants relative to women in untreated districts. Using instrumental variables and matching, we find consistent estimates for average treatment and intent to...

DO CROWDED CLASSROOMS CROWD OUT LEARNING? EVIDENCE FROM THE FOOD FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM IN BANGLADESH AgEcon
Ahmed, Akhter U.; Arends-Kuenning, Mary.
In Bangladesh, pervasive poverty has kept generations of families from sending their children to school, and without education, their children's future will be a distressing echo of their own. Many children from poor families in Bangladesh do not attend school either because their families cannot afford books and other school materials, or because the children contribute to their family's livelihood and cannot be spared. In some areas, there is also a lack of schools. Among those who enter primary school, only about 40 percent of them complete it. The commendable success of the Food for Education (FFE) program of the Government of Bangladesh has led to larger classes, but do these crowded classrooms crowd out learning? How does FFE work? The Government of...
