The environment is impacted by natural and anthropogenic disturbances that occur at different spatial and temporal scales, and that lead to major changes and even disequilibria when exceeding the resiliency capacities of the ecosystem. With an annual mean flow of 1700 m(3) s(-1), the Rhone River is the largest of the western Mediterranean basin. Its annual solid discharges vary between 2 and 20 Mt, with flood events responsible for more than 70% of these amounts. In the marine coastal area, close to the mouth, both flocculation and aggregation lead to the formation of fine-grained deposits, i.e. the prodelta. This area is characterized by sediment accumulation rates up to 20-50 cm yr(-1) and high accumulations of particle reactive contaminants such as... |

Since the Last Glacial Maximum, the Rhone River, which is the most important source of freshwater and sediment to the western Mediterranean Sea, migrated in a north-westward direction during the rapid Deglacial and Early Holocene sea-level rise. During the phase of global high sea-level (Middle and Late Holocene), an overall eastward migration of the Rhone outlet, under natural and/or human influence, is recorded through several sediment accumulations confined along the inner shelf in the form of deltaic lobes. These lobes that make up the whole Rhone subaqueous delta represent very expanded sedimentary archives of the Rhone Holocene history. In this paper, using three long piston cores retrieved from the most recent Bras de Fer (RHS-KS55) and Roustan... |

As the current main source of continental fresh water discharge in the Mediterranean Sea, the Rhone River inputs are a key forcing for ecosystems of the Gulf of Lions in the western basin. In order to better characterize the exchanges at this key interface, an oceanographic buoy has been installed at the Rhone River mouth in June 2009 for high frequency multiparameter measurements with bottom, water column and air sensors. Data are sent in near real time towards an onshore data center. |
