| This paper is concerned with analysing of regional disparities in China during the 90's and the main causes behind the increased regional disparities. It has identified regional openness, along with the nature of property right, as a critical influencing factor to the regional disparities, while found that the technological capabilities have complex association with economic growth. In particular, the empirical evidence has shown that non-firm R & D activities are highly concentrated in the major urban cities in China to such an extent that these resources appear to be negatively associated with income level when the major cities are excluded out of the analysis. | This paper discusses the corporate governance of banking institutions in developing economies. This is an important issue given the essential role banks play in the financial systems of developing economies and the widespread banking reforms that these economies have implemented. Based on a theoretical discussion of the corporate governance of banks, we suggest that banking reforms can only be fully implemented once a prudential regulatory system is in place. An integral part of banking reforms in developing economies is the privatisation of banks. | This paper highlights the corporate governance of financial institutions with particular reference to banking sector of Bangladesh. The importance of corporate governance of banks remains crucial given their contribution in economic growth through financial development. This paper has shed light on the structures of corporate governance of banks in Bangladesh involving their ownership structure, board issues, executive aspects, disclosure, and audit practices along with their associated weaknesses. The paper has also showed how political interference and failure by the regulators has contributed to the governance problems in the banks. |

| This chapter provides a brief guide to the development strategies that have been pursued and to the evolution of regulatory laws and institutions in India. It examines the new legal basis for promoting competition in India, and uses the example of telecommunications to explore some of economic and political issues relating to regulation of competition in this sector. It shows that regulatory issues need to be addressed in the early stages of reform and that the effectiveness of regulation will be enhanced by reducing the political element in regulatory decision-making. |

| Since the 1990s, accelerating economic growth has regained its dominance in the anti poverty strategies. However, the rising tendency of income inequity at the global level and within the countries emphasizes the need to incorporate distributional factors to make the pro-poor growth strategies effective. This paper explores the sources of this surge in income inequality in a developing country context. The paper attempts to estimate an earnings function for Sri Lanka based on the household expenditure survey. The earners are distinguished by ethnicity, gender, sectors of employment, place of residence, education and occupation.
