This article describes the experimental comparison of the DTU 10MW HAWT with the WindQuest 10MW VAWT scaled models when both fitted on the Nautilus-10 semisubmersible. For the campaign in Ifremer Wind&Wave tank, different rotor representations are tested from inertia only to hybrid testing with propellers and a Software in the Loop. The hybrid testing uses a tabulated approach for thrust computation and is discussed in this article. The different thrust reproduction methods are compared to OpenFAST simulations calibrated during the Lifes50+ project and used as reference points. When quantifying the scale model's fidelity to Open Fast, cross-correlation was increased up to 14% with the use of the SiL. Thanks to the validation of hydrodynamic simulations... |

The “verge of curling” recommendation is one of the common advice that sailors follow for efficient sailing downwind with a spinnaker. Wind tunnel experiments on spinnaker models conducted by [Aubin et al., 2017] in the Twisted Flow Wind Tunnel of the Yacht Research Unit of the University of Auckland have shown that curling can be related to better performance at Apparent Wind Angle ≥ 100°. In the present article, we will focus on the aerodynamic performance jump observed at Apparent Wind Angle AWA = 100°, where the drive force increases up to 15% when the sail starts to flap. Thanks to four triggered HD cameras and coded targets stuck on the sail, three flying shapes of the spinnaker are reconstructed by photogrammetry for different sheet lengths from... |

The recent use of large aspect ratio and highly loaded composite hydrofoils on sailing boats illustrates the limit of the assumption of rigid body. When flying, the hydrofoil presents large deformations which impact significantly the hydrodynamic loads expected. The present work focuses on an experimental campaign performed on a trapezoidal hydrofoil, made of polyacetate material, in the hydrodynamic tunnel at the Research Institute of French Naval Academy. Large deformations up to 4.5% of the span on the hydrofoil’s tip are measured at angle of incidence 10° for Re=0:7 x 10 6 calculated at mean chord. Vibration analysis performed on this foil, highlights an increase of its resonance frequencies with bending loading. A coupled approach between the Vortex... |

A numerical investigation of the dynamic Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) of a yacht sail plan submitted to harmonic pitching is presented to analyse the effects of motion simplifications and rigging adjustments on aerodynamic forces. It is shown that the dynamic behaviour of a sail plan subject to yacht motion clearly deviates from the quasi-steadytheory. Theaerodynamicforcespresentedasafunctionoftheinstantaneousapparentwindangleshow hysteresis loops. These hysteresis phenomena do not result from a simple phase shift between forces and motion. Plotting the hysteresis loops in the appropriate coordinate system enables the associated energy to be determined. This amount of exchanged energy is shown to increase almost linearly with the pitching reduced... |

In the present study we investigate the flapping instability of a light, soft, highly cambered membrane subject to wind loading. An original in-situ experiment is developed where time-resolved pressures and forces are measured on a full-scale yacht downwind sail called a spinnaker. Particular features of this aero-elastic problem are that the membrane is weakly constrained – held only at three corners –, has a free leading edge, and has no proper shape in the absence of wind loading. In usual operating conditions, the soft structure is subject to a flapping instability giving rise to almost periodic folding and unfolding of the fore part of the sail, associated to strong variations of pressures and forces. This dynamic behavior is analyzed in detail and... |

Composite materials are good candidates for hydrofoil manufacturing, ensuring a good balance between strength and weight. This study investigates experimentally and numerically the influence of the laminate layup on the hydrodynamic performances of a foil piercing the free surface. Four real scale hydrofoils with a constant chord, geometrically identical with different composite lay-up made up in glass or carbon fiber, are used for experiments. Mechanical properties of the foils are experimentally obtained and comparisons to numerical approaches calculating composite properties show a good consistency in the different experimental tests and good agreements of numeric and experiments (relative difference < 10%) when looking at the bending stiffness.... |

An experiment was performed in the Yacht Research Unit’s Twisted Flow Wind Tunnel (University of Auckland) to test the effect of dynamic trimming on three IMOCA 60 inspired mainsail models in an upwind (βAW = 60°) unheeled configuration. This study presents dynamic fluid structureinteractionresultsinwellcontrolledconditions(wind, sheetlength)withadynamictrimming system. Trimming oscillations are done around an optimum value of CFobj previously found with a static trim. Different oscillation amplitudes and frequencies of trimming are investigated. Measurements are done with a 6 component force balance and a load sensor giving access to the unsteady mainsail sheet load. The driving CFx and optimization target CFobj coefficient first decrease at low reduced... |

While sailing offwind, the trimmer typically adjusts the downwind sail “on the verge of luffing”, occasionally letting the luff of the sail flap. Due to the unsteadiness of the spinnaker itself, maintaining the luff on the verge of luffing requires continual adjustments. The propulsive force generated by the offwind sail depends on this trimming and is highly fluctuating. During a flapping sequence, the aerodynamic load can fluctuate by 50% of the average load. On a J/80 class yacht, we simultaneously measured time-resolved pressures on the spinnaker, aerodynamic loads, boat data and wind data. Significant spatio-temporal patterns were detected in the pressure distribution. In this paper we present averages and main fluctuations of pressure distributions... |
