In this study, a mathematical model of the cutting behaviour of the kenaf harvester was developed by considering plant stems as uniform cantilever beam. The stems were visualized as being subjected to a cutting force by a cutting blade with (n) teeth, and the energy required to overcome the shear resistance of the stem by the cutting blade is equal to the energy required for quasi-static cutting and the energy expended on overcoming friction. The developed equation was used to predict the cutting torque, power and energy requirements of the machine during operation and validated on three kenaf varieties. The result shows an increase in cutting torque of the plant stalk with crop maturity for all the varieties of kenaf. It also shows a consistent trend of... |

The performance evaluation of an existing kenaf decorticator was carried out in this study. A field was planted with kenaf at the Teaching and Research Farm (T&RF) of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. The field was maintained and monitored until the kenaf was 10 weeks old when the evaluation of the machine commenced. The kenaf decorticator was evaluated using different operation parameters, which include plant age (10, 11 and 12 weeks after planting), kenaf stem size (small, medium and large) and decorticator speeds (520, 600 and 680 rpm) giving rise to a 3 by 3 factorial experiment. The result showed that the highest mean of throughput value... |
