How can sustainable agricultural systems promote food security in a changing climate? Organic Eprints
Sumelius, John; Bäckman, Stefan; Kahiluoto, Helena; Rötter, Reimund; Nyairo, Newton; Valkila, Joni; Parviainen, Tuulikki; Zahidul Islam, K.M.; Motaher Hossain, Md.; Tenaw, Shimelles; Ingutia, Rose.
A theoretical framework of the link between climate change, rural development, sustainable agriculture, poverty, and food security is presented. Some options to respond to climate change are described. Current knowledge and potential effects on agricultural productivity is discussed. Necessary conditions for successful adaptation includes secured property rights to land, institutions that make market access possible and credit possibilities. The options of mitigation and enhanced capacity and the requirements for their implementation are discussed.

Sustainable rural development with emphasis on agriculture and food security within the climate change setting : SARD-climate final report Organic Eprints
Sumelius, John; Bäckman, Stefan; Kahiluoto, Helena; Rötter, Reimund.
Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development (SARD) is considered an essential step toward achieving the first Millenium Development Goal (MDG) of eradicating extreme hunger and poverty. In order to achieve this important goal, first it is important to find ways of increasing the incomes of the rural poor, who mostly depend on upon agriculture for their livelihoods. This means improving development, cooperation, trade and agricultural policy to improve agriculture's contribution to economic development and poverty reduction. Current projects estimate that 1.02 billion people will go hungry in 2009 alone; an indication that if efforts are not directed at reversing this trend it would most likely continue. The research on climate change effect on...

Localisation and recycling in rural food systems - impact and solutions Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Granstedt, Artur; Bäckman, Stefan; Fischer, Holger; Hannula, Annamari; Kakriainen, Salla; Krumalova, Veronica; Larsson, Markus; Lehto, Tiina; Nousiainen, Marko; Pylkkänen, Päivi; Schneider, Thomas; Seppänen, Laura; Seuri, Pentti; Sumelius, John; Thomsson, Olof; Vesala, Kari; Vihma, Antto.
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of an increased share of local organic food based on local resources, especially on increased recycling (i.e. the impact of increased locality or localization), on sustainability of rural food systems around the Baltic Sea. Obstacles and solutions for sustainable localization and recycling were also identified. In addition to these main objectives, a methodological interest in developing interdisciplinary research processes was also incorporated. Case food systems in eight Baltic countries were studied on the basis of interviews and stakeholder workshops, as well as by analysis of environmental indicators and economic parameters at farm and food system level by a European multidisciplinary research group....

Local food options - a linear programming perspective on three organic farms in South Savolax, Finland Organic Eprints
Bäckman, Stefan; Krumalova, Veronika.
The options for three case farms to maintain and increase localized organic food production and circulation were analysed, and a standard linear programming method was used. Several scenarios were developed for each case farm; as a result, possibilities for co-operation between farmers through local markets could be analysed.
