Allergiezusammenhänge im Überblick: Milchfettqualität als schützende Maßnahme gegen Allergien Organic Eprints
Baars, Prof Dr Ton; Jahreis, Prof Dr Gerhard.
Allergy in human populations is increasing due to modern lifestyle. Farm children and children with an anthroposophic lifestyle showed less allergic symptoms. This article describes the modern insights about nowadays nutrition and lifestyle factors impacting on the development of allergies and the research done in the 1920s about the health status of indigenous people and their eating behaviour. Many epidemiological studies mention the quality of farm milk, raw milk and milk fat as important factors to reduce the risk of allergies. It is explained why and how a high-quality milk fat in terms of conjugated linolenic acid and omega-3 long-chain fatty acids are influencing the cell physiology. These new insights will affect future strategies of...

Mögliche Wirkungswege der biologisch-dynamischen Hornpräparate aus naturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive Organic Eprints
Scheper, BSc Carsten; Raupp, Dr Joachim; Baars, Prof Dr Ton.
Although since 1924 the biodynamic hornpreparations (cowhorn manure and cowhorn silica) have been practically used and investigated in several doctoral theses, hardly any attention has been paid at the scientific evaluation and explanation of their effects. The results of experimental studies with the preparations are summarized. To understand their mechanism, an ecological and ecophysiological focus can be used. It shows that at several levels of the agro-ecosystem regulative mechanisms can be found. Bacterial and hormonal effects are found, if the preparations are analysed. These scientific results should be understood and discussed in relation to the anthroposophical or esoteric understanding of the biodynamic preparations.

Erfahrungswissenschaftliche Evaluierung von 7 ökologischen Milchviehbetrieben mit überdurchschnittlich guten Zellzahlen Organic Eprints
Zipp, Frau Katherina; Kusche, Dipl Ing Daniel; Baars, Prof Dr Ton.
The maintenance of udder health is one of the biggest problems in organic dairy farming. Therefore, it was the aim to explore the experience of successful farming experts to evaluate their individual complex solutions for mastitis ans somatic cell count problems. 7 organic dairy farmers in Baden-Württemberg/Germany were selected, who achieved an above-average low somatic cell count. Qualitative steeredquestion interviews and the observation of two milkings were used to investigate their knowledge and insight and their practical daily actions. The results were clustered in the following areas: milk analysis, animal health and therapy, animal husbandry and hygiene in the barn, milking machine, milking management and hygiene, feeding, raising of...

Gestaltung einer partizipativen Forschung und Beratung innerhalb eines Projektes in der ökologischen Milchviehhaltung Organic Eprints
Baars, Prof Dr Ton; Van Eekeren, Ir Nick; Pinxterhuis, Dr Ir Ina.
In The Netherlands a participatory project was established, called BIOVEEM (Management for organic dairy farming) (www.bioveem.nl). The central idea was an integration of science and practice and the renewal of experiential methods. Advisors and researchers were trained how to be a coach and to stimulate active learning within a pioneering group of farmers. Three different approaches were used in the project to achieve the project aim: on-farm experimental and observational research, (process)-monitoring plus comparison, evaluation and systematic inclusion of farmers’ experiences in the research & development process. Much emphasis was put on describing ‘the systems that work’, pinning down and distributing the novelties that were developed by...

Workshop: Methodische Weiterentwicklung der Erfahrungswissenschaft und ihren Bedeutung für die ökologischen Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Baars, Prof Dr Ton; Kaufmann, PD Dr Brigitte.

Vereijken, Dipl.Ing.Agr (NL) Hans; Rübesam, Dipl.Ing Karin; Baars, Prof Dr Ton.
Self-medication describes the free choice behaviour of animals to select food - and/or medical plants depending on their health status. In 2007 a case study about endoparasitic nematodes (MDS) in sheep was done. This included the monitoring of MDS in fresh animal manure and the foraging behaviour of the flock. As a result, adult sheep seemed to be able to control the level of MDS on a moderate level, whereas the first year lambs obvious failed to do so. Looking at the corresponding forage behaviour a few plants could be detected with a possible characteristic of animal self-medication of MDS through sheep. Further analysis of plant metabolites and experimental on-farm research with a mix of plants should clear this hypothesis.
