Reconciling scientific approaches for organic farming research: Part I- Reflection on research methods in organic grassland and animal production at the Louis Bolk Institute, The Netherlands Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.
This dissertation focuses on the research question: what is peculiar to agricultural research when its purpose is to support the conscious development of organic agriculture? What approaches, designs and methods are used for such research? Since the 1990s the Louis Bolk Institute has become one of the important actors in the field of organic research and development. The author analysed the methodological aspects of seven case studies, each following the same format: background of the project, methods used, a reflection on the methods and, to a limited extent, agronomic results. Each of these sheds light on an aspect of the Louis Bolk Institute’s approach to research. Organic farming is experienced as a new paradigm and its research methods need to do...

Variability of soil fertility and crop yield on a sandy field site in western Poland under bio-dynamic management" Organic Eprints
Fließbach, Andreas; Baars, Ton; Huisman, Sebastiaan; Jorgas, Thorsten; Lewandowska-Robak, Maja; Strässer, Cornelius; Mäder, Paul.
Variability of crop yield and soil quality was analysed before the start of a field experiment on a bio-dynmaic farm in Western Poland. The field site showed two zones of contrasting soil quality that partly correlated with crop yields. The procedure allowed to define high and low yielding zones and was suitable to design a balanced comparison trial.

Desk study on homeopathy in organic livestock farming: Principles, obstacles and recommendations for practice and research Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton; Baars, Erik; Bruin, de, Anja; Ellinger, Liesbeth.
Organic livestock farming has its own concept of health and welfare. The approach to health can be characterised by the key words human, preventive, self-regulating and holistic (Chapter 1). This has consequences for the way we deal with diseases and problems, the nature of the solutions and the use of medication, among other things. In terms of therapeutic and regulatory measures this health concept is based primarily on natural food supplements and homeopathic remedies, which in view of their origin fit in well with the natural character of organic agriculture (Verhoog et al., 2002). Apart from various forms of potentised remedies (classic, clinical, anthroposophic, isopathic; Chapter 2) and all manner of applications within phytotherapy (Bach flower,...

Konturen einer Erfahrungswissenschaft - Praktische Elemente zur Ergänzung der naturwissenschaftlichen Betrachtungsweise Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.

Baars, Ton.
The process of spontaneous degradation of milk at 20oC was compared with other analytical quality parameters in milk. Biodynamic milk showed a higher oxidation of the milk fat and a longer renneting time. Conventional milk often tasted better. There is a correlation between several hygienic parameters in milk (germ count, etc) and the quality of degradation. However, the total germ count could not explain all differences and the question was raised if biodynamic milk might have a better resistance to degradation due to a specific bacterial flora or other defence mechanisms in the bio-dynamic milk.

Hörner und Wärmeregulierung - Schlüsse aus Hornformen und Wärmebildern Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.

Bestman, Monique; Cuijpers, Willemijn; Baars, Ton.

Baars, Ton; Liberacka, Monika; Rohrer, Carsten; Jahreis, Gerhard.
At the biodynamic farm Juchowo, 7 pairs of dairy cows from 2 breeds (Holstein (HF) and Brown Swiss (BS)) were milk sampled in summer and in winter. Cows are grazed in summer and fed hay in winter. Differences in the milk fatty acid profile were evaluated for effects of month (fodder), breed and individual cows. The most important way to improve the FA quality is through grazing of fresh grass. Therefor milk from grass based systems should be preferred. Overall breed effects were small, but there are still possibilities present to select individual cows to get an improved FA quality profile in terms of CLA, n-3 FA and delta-9-desaturase activity.

Wilhelm, Birgit; Baars, Ton; Kaufmann, Brigitte.
In organic agriculture the plough is still the main tillage equipment. However some successful organic farmers have been working with conservation tillage systems since more than ten years. In the project their experience and their thus developed knowledge will be systematically registered and analysed to understand the complex system and its rules of action and decision making. The objective of this approach is to show the reasons of the success within single systems, secondly to identify general rules for conservation tillage systems in organic farming.

Ökologische Milchqualität und gesundheitliche Fragen – Forschungsvorhaben am Fachgebiet Biologisch-dynamische Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Kusche, Daniel; Baars, Ton.
Milk as one of the most important nutritional sources has also become one of the major food allergens. What are the reasons for differences of milk from organic and conventional origin? The ongoing research shows a high impact of management practices on milk quality and composition. Which quality characteristic marks consis-tently organic milk quality and how could quality be optimized? The planned transdis-ciplinary and participative project combines analytical and holistic methods to assess organic milk quality and to evaluate the impact on human health.

Milchqualität biologisch-dynamisch - Gibt es da Unterschiede? Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton; Kusche, Daniel; Wohlers, Jenifer; Mosler, Stephan.

Is there something like bio-dynamic breeding? Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton; Spengler, Anet; Spranger, Joerg.
In this paper the differentiation made within the concept of naturalness will be used to explain the different approaches in breeding within the organic movement. The differentiation of the concept will result into a framework, which will be used as a tool to describe and explain the elements of bio-dynamic animal breeding. Bio-dynamics is a practical result out of the anthroposophical worldview. Bio-dynamics developed its own way to judge about relationships in the physical world, used its own language to express the holistic approach in agriculture and focused on additional relationships within the world.

Experiential science as a novel scientific discipline Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. This paper positions experiential science as a new discipline in science with its own characteristics and principles. New elements in experiential science are the recognition of unique patterns in relation to previous actions and the reflection on intuitive, unique actions. There is a need for a new vocabulary to develop experiential science as a novel discipline.

Goetheanistische Qualitätsbeurteilung von Kuhrohmilch Der Eigen-Abbauprozess bei 20oC und dessen Beurteilung Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.
The spontaneous degradation of milk at 20oC was investigated within a Goetheanistic approach to determine the milk quality. Two opposite degradation processes were found. One extreme were milk samples that got sour within 1 1/2 day and showed no further changes. The pH was stable at about 4.0. Only a grey mould deck covered the cream at the top. This extreme was called the acid pole. On the other side, milk sam-ples remained fluid over 5-7 days period. Taste became even more intensive after day 2-3 (like roasted nuts). Fungi were flat growing and very colourful in red and yellow. The casein was clotting very slowly at the bottom of the glass and tended to be solu-ble in the end and the fat layer became thinner every day. The pH of this milk never came...

Reconciling scientific approaches for organic farming research: Part II - Effects of manure types and white clover (Trifolium repens) cultivars on the productivity of grass-clover mixtures grown on a humid sandy soil Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.
This Part describes the agronomic results of the multidisciplinary grassland study. This project concerned the effects of clover varieties and spring applications of animal manure on the yield of grass-white clover mixtures on a moist sandy soil (1993-1996). To be aware of the context of the findings in a multidisciplinary approach, attention was paid to: chemical soil fertility, damage to clover by slugs and soil borne nematodes. To increase the understanding of soil fertility, earthworm dynamics were also measured. At the end of the period the botanical composition of all plots was assessed. Factors measured besides total yield and clover yield were N, P and K yield. It was found that these ‘context ’-measurements were important for the overall...

Erfahrungswissenschaft und Expertenblick -Eine Forschungsmethode inspiriert von der biologisch-dynamischen Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton; Baars, E..
Experiential science is based on the unique knowledge gathered by experienced practitioners. Both the reflective evaluation of case studies and expert judgement processes and the use of pattern recognition are core elements of experiential scien-tific methodology. Development of experiential knowledge and insights are thus pri-marily based on experts’ actions and the reflections on those actions. The methodol-ogy has been created based on intensive cooperation between single farmers or farmer groups and scientists/advisors. Experiential knowledge is not only holistic, but also adequate. As in formal science, experienced practitioners develop valid knowl-edge and in new, unknown situations they have a capability to integrate their diagno-sis (“knowing...

Hat biodynamische Milch ein eigenes Profil? Gesunde Fettsäuremuster lassen sich durch Fütterung steuern Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.

Resultaten melkonderzoek 2005 Organic Eprints
