In Memoriam Cornelis (Kees) Kalkman (1928—1998) Naturalis
Baas, Pieter.
With the sudden and untimely death of Kees Kalkman on 19 January 1998, systematic botany in general and the Rijksherbarium/Hortus Botanicus in particular lost a great servant. The word servant is appropriate, because in a totally unselfish and very conscientious way Kalkman carried out all the duties associated with the various functions he held during his distinguished career. Kalkman’s busy schedule was filled by doing things that were useful for others and for projects or institutions he believed in. In an earlier note on the occasion of his retirement (Blumea 35 [1991] 277-278), I have briefly sketched Kalkman’s career and stressed his important role as Director, first of the Rijksherbarium, and later of the Research Institute Rijksherbarium/Hortus...

Dr. Ding Hou 80 years young Naturalis
Baas, Pieter; Adema, Frits.
Eleven October 2001 is the 80th birthday of Dr. Ding Hou, much appreciated Honorary Staff Member of our Nationaal Herbarium Nederland. Time to reflect on the life and career of this modest but highly productive and talented botanist. Ding Hou was born in 1921 in Hsingkan, Kiangsi Province, China. From 1941— 1945 he studied Botany for his BSc degree at the National Chung-Cheng University in Kiangsi, where he spent another two years as Botanical Assistant. From 1947- 1951 he held a similar position at the National Taiwan University in Taipei. He then moved to the United States of America where he earned an MA in Plant Taxonomy at the Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1952, and his PhD on a revision of the genus Celastrus in 1955 under...

The morphology and relationships of Paracryphia (Paracryphiaceae) Naturalis
Dickison, William C.; Baas, Pieter.
A comprehensive study of floral and vegetative anatomy of the monotypic New Caledonian genus Paracryphia Baker was initiated in an attempt to help clarify the evolutionary relationships of the genus. Detailed descriptions of leaf, axis, nodal, wood, floral, pollen, and fruit morphology and anatomy are presented. In general, most vegetative characters are distinctly primitive whereas those of the reproductive organs are regarded as advanced or specialized. The present study confirms the opinion that Paracryphia merits familial status. All previously suggested relationships of the genus are rejected in favor of a view that envisions Paracryphia as an independent and early divergence from the Thealean, Ericalean, and/or Celastralean lines of evolution. This...

Leaf anatomy of the Melastomataceae, Memecylaceae, and Crypteroniaceae Naturalis
Mentink, Helmy; Baas, Pieter.
The leaf anatomy of the Melastomataceae, Memecylaceae and Crypteroniaceae is surveyed on the basis of 179 samples representing 151 genera. The Melastomataceae appear to be leaf anatomically very heterogeneous. An unusual diversity of hair types is present, varying from simple unicellular hairs to very complex multicellular, non-glandular or glandular trichomes. Elongate multiseriate unbranched non-glandular hairs and short-stalked glandular hairs are most common. Stomata generally are polo-, dia-, tetra-, and anomocytic; other types and intermediate kinds also occur. A hypodermis is sometimes present. The mesophyll is usually dorsiventral, rarely isobilateral. Sclereids of various types are present in some genera. Crystals are usually druses, sometimes...

Professor Kalkman retires Naturalis
Baas, Pieter.
On 13 December 1990 Prof. Dr. Cornelis (Kees) Kalkman retired from the positions of Professor of Plant Systematics and Scientific Director of the Rijksherbarium/ Hortus Botanicus by presenting his valedictory lecture to the academic community of Leiden University and the assembled Dutch Botanical world. The day after, circa 170 staff members and partners joined in the research institute for a memorable farewell party, culminating in a show around the personality of the parting Director. Bom in Delft on 5 May 1928, Kalkman used the opportunity of early retirement at the age of 62, after a long term as an active and successful administrator and coordinator of research and teaching in plant taxonomy in Leiden. This now offers him the possibility to return to...

New taxa to commemorate the opening of the Van Steenis building by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix Naturalis
Baas, Pieter.
Systematic botany is about the discovery, description, naming, and understanding of plant diversity. Of these four aspects the naming and describing of new species belongs to the most traditional, yet exciting activities of the plant taxonomist. On the occasion of the official opening of the Van Steenis Building by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix, we indulge in presenting species and one genus, new to science, and named to commemorate this auspicious event. The Van Steenis Building provides the new and highly functional premises for the Rijksherbarium, the Centre for Environmental Science, and the facilities for the undergraduate study of biology of Leiden University. Prof. Dr. C. G.G.J, van Steenis (1901-1986) was an unrivalled authority of Malesian botany but...

Robert Geesink (1945—1992) Naturalis
Baas, Pieter; Zandee, Rino.
On 2 September 1992 Rob Geesink died a week before he would have reached the age of 47. He had been associated with the Rijksherbarium from his student days in the sixties onwards. For his MSc programme he successfully revised the Portulacaceae for Flora Malesiana and carried out an experimental-ecological study of the genus Bangia (red algae). In 1971 he received his congratulatory (‘cum laude’) MSc degree. From 1972 to 1974 he was executive taxonomist in the Thai-Dutch cooperative project for the Flora of Thailand, a post during which he made four botanical explorations. In 1976 he was finally appointed on the staff of the Rijksherbarium, from 1987 to early 1990 as Project Leader of the research group for Tropical Phanerogams. Rob’s talents and interests...
