Trout and salmon market is one of the major markets for fish in France. The domestic production covers the demand for trout and it is very stable (30.000 tons) after a rapid expansion during the early eighties. With the rapid expansion of the world production, the price for salmon has been steadily decreasing since 1986. The French market for salmon depends completely on imports. The quantity imported increases more rapidly than the drop of the price. Salmon import is the main cause for the deficit of the trade of seaproducts in France. Salmon production is not likely to expand significantly during the coming years. The troutproduction sector seems to be at the point where the commercial benefits (quality control, trade scale economies, promotion...) may... |

The health of the ocean, central to human well-being, has now reached a critical point. Most fish stocks are overexploited, climate change and increased dissolved carbon dioxide are changing ocean chemistry and disrupting species throughout food webs, and the fundamental capacity of the ocean to regulate the climate has been altered. However, key technical, organizational, and conceptual scientific barriers have prevented the identification of policy levers for sustainability and transformative action. Here, we recommend key strategies to address these challenges, including (1) stronger integration of sciences and (2) ocean-observing systems, (3) improved science-policy interfaces, (4) new partnerships supported by (5) a new ocean-climate finance system,... |

Known for the presence of its fleet on all the oceans of the globe and its position as world leader in terms of production (12,739,000 tonnes in 1988), Japan also has one of the largest trade balance deficits of seafood. Consumption of fish, a principal source of animal proteins in the Japanese diet, takes on many and sometimes indirect forms with fish- or fishmeal-based farming. |

While economic valuation of ecosystem services (ES) is widely acknowledged as a tool to support decision-making processes, studies have also shown that there exists a literature blindspot on the effective use of economic valuation (Laurans et al. 2013; Marco ne and Mongruel 2014). The VALMER project seeks to bridge this gap between theory and practice by looking at how ecosystem services assessment (ESA) can support marine management and planning. Natural scientists, economists and marine environment managers from various institutions undertook ESAs in six pilot sites over the two sides of the Channel. The objectives of this paper are to share some results of two French ESAs, and to discuss issues and perspectives of ESAs from a marine management... |

(OCR non controlé) General terms of reference for the project and conclusions reached by other consultants point out that Greece offers good opportunities to develop aquaculture to the level of a socially and economically significant industry. Aquaculture development is stated to contribute to Government aims such as food security, preservation of foreign exchange, social and economic development of remote rural areas and contribution to the gross national product by rational use of water resources. The assessment of the contribution of a new industry to the national economy, as is the case for the aquaculture industry, is difficult to make in quantitative terms. There is a lack of historical records and figures on costs and benefits covering the first... |

Coastal fisheries and marine cultures developed under strong biological, economical and social constraints. Among others are limitation of space and resources, limited availibility of capital, hardship of work,... Industrial, urbanistic and touristic development add to these constraints in coastal areas. Coherent scheme for coastal fisheries management, capture and culture, is of an urgent need. In renewable resources and environnement economics, depletion and pollution resulting from common ownership have been the core of the theory about fisheries management. The chronology of Japanese coastal fisheries management system shows a different approach. In law and decision making, social and economic consequences of conflictual uses and of their regulation... |

The biologists have presented the conclusions of their study. Some work on identifying the causes of the difficulties that the profession is experiencing (death rates, lengthening of growth cycles, epizootics, contamination...). Others are aiming to open up new prospects to the profession through management of shellfish stocks, genetic research and/or diversification of the farms. Each of these aspects is manifested by economic (costs, income, profitability ...) and social (employment, hours of work ...) consequences across the profession and the local economy. It is these consequences that we want to evaluate. To do that, the objectives of the "Socio-economic studies in shellfish farming" programme are to define the factors making it possible to create:... |

Ecosystem resilience is the capacity of ecosystems to tolerate disorders without collapsing into different circumstances qualitatively controlled by a different set of processes. A robust ecosystem is one that can withstand shocks and rebuild itself when necessary. This study aims to identify the value of use-based economy and non-use value of current economy; calculating the total economic value of mangrove resources; and provide suggestions and recommendations based on observations in Timbulsloko, Sayung, Demak. The method used is economic valuation with total economic value technique. The sampling technique used non-probability and purposive sampling method. The results showed that the direct use value of mangroves was utilized by fisherman, fish pond... |

The term "extensive mariculture" covers two main types of production : the exclusive territorial right based aquaculture of fixed species and stock enhancement based fisheries. The releasing of juveniles, with or without the supply of adequate habitat, is presently the main form of stock enhancement. Japanese experience shows the difficulty to clearly assess the benefits of marine ranching, and then to ensure its management. Some of the main aspects of this management are presented here : public and private costs-benefits analysis, the relation fishing/aquaculture/sea-ranching and the role of collective organization for management. |

This short paper presents the approach which has been implemented in France for estimating the costs of ecosystem degradation in the context of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Among the possible approaches, forgone benefits assessment or maintenance costs assessment, France decided to use the latter. The paper contains an introduction, a section which explains how to choose an economic approach coherent with the MSFD rationale, a section which exposes the methodology developed for implementing the approach, and a section on the main results. |

The implementation of the European integrated marine policy poses many scientific challenges. Among them, the knowledge and understanding of interactions between anthropogenic pressures and ecological components is an important issue, particularly to help define Good Environmental Status, environmental targets and monitoring programs of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008, MSFD). Assessment of cumulative effects of different pressures is a particularly complex issue requiring modeling tools and methods, as well as accurate data sets on human activities, anthropogenic pressures and ecological components. The results of these assessments are also uncertain and highly dependent on the calculation methods and assumptions, as well as on the data sets... |

Aquaculture is an economic activit y which is characterised by a great dependence on environmental conditions. Therefore, aquaculture development is subdued to institutional context which defines the rules for use and conservation of natural resources. This paper analyses the impact of marine environment regulations on economic operating of aquaculture enterprises and on industrial d ynamics. Because aquaculture enterprises use common goods, an economic approach of aquaculture has to take into account not only the relations between enterprises and environment, but also the relations between the enterprises themselves, through production externalities. In this study, several economic tools are considered in order to incite enterprises to integrate parr of... |

The marine farming sector in France is often assimilated into new aquafarming, the production of which remains in actuality anecdotal. The different studies show that the brakes on growth are located at the corporate level. They are linked to the nature and level of investment on the one hand, and to the dependence of production with respect to the environment and the imperfections of the markets on the other hand. A theoretical model of corporate decision support using linear programming is presented, with a dual objective: 1) obtain a general behaviour model of an aquafarming firm independent of its production, taking into account the factors of risk and uncertainty, and 2) provide, by later use of this model, a tool that has multiple functions, to... |

One of the current major scientific challenges to sustain social-ecological systems is to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services. Here, we analyse the bundles of ecosystem services supplied by three coastal ecosystems (coastal lagoons, coral reefs and sandy beaches) along a gradient of eutrophication. Based on a state-and-transition model, we analyses the dynamic responses of ecological communities to environmental change and management actions. Although few exceptions are highlighted, increasing eutrophication in the three ecosystem types leads to a degradation of the ecosystem service bundles, particularly for nutrient and pathogen... |
