Copper, molybdenum and cobalt in herbage and ruminants from organic farms in Norway Organic Eprints
Govasmark, Espen; Steen, Arvid; Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Strøm, Turid; Hansen, Sissel; Bernhoft, Aksel.
To evaluate the animal nutritional status of copper, molybdenum and cobalt on Norwegian organic farms, soil, herbage and animal blood samples were collected from 27 dairy and sheep farms and analysed for Cu, Mo and Co. The herbage median (10th-90th percentile) Cu, Mo, and Co concentrations (mg/kg DM) and the Cu:Mo ratio in the first cut were 5.3 (3.9-6.8), 1.5 (0.6-4.8), <0.05 (<0.05-0.08) and 3.8 (1.1-8.3) and in the second cut 7.0 (5.7-9.3), 3.3 (1.6-10.1), 0.06 (<0.05-0.15) and 2.0 (0.8-5.2), respectively. The results of mixed model analyses of herbage Cu and Mo indicated that soil pH, soil organic matter content, herbage botanical composition, yield and phenological stage of timothy at harvest mostly influenced the herbage micronutrient...

Factors affecting the concentration of Zn, Fe and Mn in herbage from organic farms and in relation to dietary requirements of ruminants Organic Eprints
Govasmark, Espen; Steen, Arvid; Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Strøm, Turid; Hansen, Sissel.
To obtain a general picture of the herbage zinc, iron and manganese concentrations and their relation to dietary requirements of ruminants on organic farms, we analysed soil and herbage samples from four regions in Norway. The soil median Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations were 0.18, 13 and 0.84 mg/L, respectively. The herbage median (10th-90th percentile) Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations (mg/kg) in herbage in the first cut were 19 (14-34), 50 (36-88), 34 (22-86) and in the second cut 21 (16-37), 84 (52-171) and 66 (36-205), respectively. The results of mixed model analysis of herbage Zn, Fe and Mn indicate that soil pH, soil texture, soil mineral concentration and botanical composition are the most influencing factors. We conclude that Zn, Fe and Mn did not limit...

A discussion of norms for S supply in organic farming based on content in forage and ruminant performance in Norway Organic Eprints
Hansen, Sissel; Bakken, Anne Kjersti.
The content of sulphur (S) in grassland on 27 Norwegian organic farms with dairy or sheep production was investigated in 2001 and 2002. The forage content of S was below the norms (2 g S kg DM-1) for both plants and animals in a large proportion of the samples. The average S content in forage at dairy farms was 1.4 g S kg DM-1 and at sheep farms 1.5 g. Even on grasslands with low plant S content (<1 g S kg DM-1), S-fertilization did not increase yields and increased the plants’ S content only very slightly. No indications of S deficiency were observed on the dairy farms. For one sheep farm with a forage S content of 1.1 ± 0.1g S kg DM-1, brittle and short winter wool was reported.

Yield and herbage quality from organic grass clover leys—a meta-analysis of Norwegian field trials Organic Eprints
Steinshamn, Håvard; Adler, Steffen A.; Frøseth, Randi Berland; Lunnan, Tor; Torp, Torfinn; Bakken, Anne Kjersti.
A meta-analysis based on experiments in organically cultivated grasslands in Norway was conducted to quantify the effects of management factors on herbage yield and feed quality. A dataset was collected that included 496 treatment means from experiments in five studies carried out at eight locations with the latitude range of 58.8 to 69.6 N between 1993 and 2010. We tested the effect of harvesting system (two vs. Three cuts annually), plant developmental stage at the first cut, growth period (temperature sum) and the herbage clover proportion. Plant maturity at the first cut and herbage clover proportion explained to a large extent herbage yield and quality of the first cut and annual yield. The timing of the first cut influenced also the yield and herbage...

Improving N efficiency in barley through green manure management and biogas slurry Organic Eprints
Frøseth, Randi Berland; Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Bleken, Marina Azzaroli; Riley, Hugh; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Hansen, Sissel.
In cereal production on stockless organic farms, green manure (GM) is commonly used to improve soil fertility. The clover-grass swards are mown frequently and the herbage is commonly mulched. The purpose of this study was to increase knowledge of the N-dynamics in such rotations, in order to suggest methods for improving N efficiency and thus organic cereal yields. The hypothesis was that spring application of biogas residue from anaerobic digestion of GM herbage increases the N uptake and yield of a subsequent barley crop, compared with repeatedly in situ mulching of the same GM herbage in the preceding season. The effect of various GM treatments on spring barley yields and nitrogen dynamics was investigated, at four sites differing in soil and climatic...

Jordarbeidingsmetodar for korndominerte dyrkingssystem – avlingseffektar Organic Eprints
Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Henriksen, Trond; Mangerud, Kjell; Eltun, Ragnar; Riley, Hugh; Fjeld, Tori; Selnes, Svein; Wikmark, Thorbjørn.

Contribution of N from frequently chopped green manure to a succeeding crop of barley Organic Eprints
Frøseth, Randi Berland; Hansen, Sissel; Bakken, Anne Kjersti.
The aim of the present work was to study to what extent N in mulched green manure herbage contributes to spring barley grain yield the subsequent year. The green manure herbage was either chopped and left on stubble (GML) or removed (GMR). On silty clay loam with spring incorporated green manure the subsequent barley grain yield was 10% higher with GML than with GMR. The additional grain N yield of 4 kg ha-1 with GML corresponded to only 3 % of N in above-ground green manure biomass. On loamy soil with late autumn incorporated green manure the treatments did not affect the grain yield the subsequent year. How large part of the N that was lost through leaching or gaseous emissions and how large part that was built into soil organic matter was not measured....

Sulphur supply: a limiting factor in organic roughage-based livestock production? Organic Eprints
Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Hansen, Sissel; Strøm, Turid; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Abstract - The herbage sulphur (S) content on 28 organic farms was monitored in order to evaluate the S supply for plants and ruminants in organic livestock production. The S content and the protein content were generally low. S fertilisation improved the yield and protein content of red clover only when the initial S supply was very low. Increasing S application rates did not increase the S content of red clover above a certain level that depended on other soil and environmental factors. Instead of an increase in the shoots with increasing S supply, there was an accumulation of S in the roots.

Effects of green manure herbage management and its digestate from biogas production on barley yield, N recovery, soil structure and earthworm populations Organic Eprints
Frøseth, Randi Berland; Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Bleken, Marina Azzaroli; Riley, Hugh; Pommeresche, Reidun; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Hansen, Sissel.
In repeatedly mown and mulched green manure leys, the mulched herbage contains substantial amounts of nitrogen (N), which may only slightly contribute to the following crops’ nutrient demand. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of alternative strategies for green manure management on the yield and N recovery of a subsequent spring barley crop, and their short term effects on soil structure and earthworm populations. A field trial was run from 2008 to 2011 at four sites with contrasting soils under cold climate conditions. We compared several options for on-site herbage management and the application of anaerobically digested green manure herbage. Depending on the site, removal of green manure herbage reduced the barley grain yield...

Soil fertility in three cropping systems after conversion from conventional to organic farming Organic Eprints
Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Breland, Tor Arvid; Haraldsen, Trond K.; Aamlid, Trygve S.; Sveistrup, Tore E..
Temporal changes in the scores of selected soil fertility indices were studied over six years in three different cases of organic crop rotation located in southern, eastern and central Norway. The cropping history and the initial scores of fertility indices prior to conversion to organic cropping differed between the sites. Crop yields, regarded as an overall, integrating fertility indicator, were in all rotations highly variable with few consistent temporal trends following the first year after conversion. On the site in eastern Norway, where conversion followed several years of all-arable crop rotations, earthworm number and biomass and soil physical properties improved, whereas the system was apparently degrading with regard to P and K trade balances...

Mikromineralinnhold i jord og planter - mikromineralforsyning til drøvtyggere i økologisk landbruk Organic Eprints
Govasmark, Espen; Steen, Arvid; Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Strøm, Turid; Hansen, Sissel.
