Action of the extracts of Pluchea sagittalis on the absorptive characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract BABT
Burger,Marilise E.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Teixeira,Elisângela P.; Soares,Joceana.
Pluchea sagittalis (Lam.) Cabrera, (quitoco or erva lucera) is commonly used to treat digestive disorders in Southern Brazil and countries of the South Cone. The crude aqueous extracts from the leaves, stalks or flowers were used in acute oral toxicity in mice and in pharmacological studies to determine the gastrointestinal transport of water, sodium, and potassium in rats. The oral administration of 5000 mg/kg of extracts examined did not produce signs of intoxication nor induce the death of any mice during the period of 14 days. The extracts from the leaves and stalk have reduced the absorption of water in the jejunum and jejunum and ileum, respectively with relation to the control. There was an absorption of sodium with the administration of these...

Parodi,Thaylise Vey; Vargas,Agueda Palmira de Castagna; Krewer,Carina; Flores,Érico Marlon de Moraes; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Oliveira,José Vladimir de; Popiolski,Ariana Secco; Minozzo,Mariane.
This study investigated the chemical composition of five different extracts of Aloysia triphylla and their activity against Aeromonas sp. The extracts were obtained from the dried leaves by pressurized CO2 extraction at 30, 50 and 70ºC, and 100, 150, and 200 bar, and analyzed by GC/FID and GC-MS. The antibacterial activity was assayed by the microdilution method. The tested microorganisms comprised seven Aeromonas isolates obtained from the kidney of infected silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen. The yield, chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the extracts were dependent on the extraction conditions. Mono and sesquiterpenoids were the major constituents of all the extracts and the highest extraction yield was obtained at 70ºC and 200 bar. A....

Citral chemotype of the Lippia alba essential oil as an additive in simulated transport with different loading densities of tambaqui juveniles Ciência Rural
Silva,Hugo Napoleão Pereira da; Souza,Rodrigo Numeriano de; Sousa,Elen Monique de Oliveira; Mourão,Rosa Helena Veras; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Silva,Lenise Vargas Flores da.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the citral chemotype of Lippia alba essential oil (EOLA) as an additive in a simulated transport with different loading densities of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) juveniles. Simulated transport of tambaqui juveniles at three loading densities (30, 60 and 90 fish/L) was carried out either with only water (WC) or 20 μL.L-1 EOLA. Dissolved oxygen levels, pH, conductivity and temperature of the water were measured at the beginning and end of the simulated transport. Treatment with EOLA did not change survival or dissolved oxygen levels at the end of simulation. The pH of the water at the end of simulation with EOLA was lower than in that of WC but did not change with loading density. Water...

Dietary protein levels in Piaractus brachypomus submitted to extremely acidic or alkaline pH Ciência Rural
Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Gutiérrez-Espinosa,Mariana; Wásquez-Torres,Walter; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary protein levels in pirapitinga, Piaractus brachypomus, submited to extremely acidic or alkaline pH. Juveniles were fed for 20 days with three diets with different crude protein (CP) levels (25.3, 32.4 and 40.0%) and then separated in five groups (n=10, three replicates each) which were kept in 60 L aquaria and exposed to pH 3.0, 3.5, 7.0, 10, or 10.5. Fish were removed from aquaria when they showed loss of swimming balance, and then blood was collected and plasma separated for measurement of Na+, Cl- and K+ levels. The increase of dietary protein levels (up to 40.0% CP) provided some protection for pirapitinga at pH 3.5 or 10.0 because the time to lose equilibrium increased after acute...

Silva,Hugo Napoleão Pereira da; Carvalho,Brenna Celina Ferreira de; Maia,Janna Laely dos Santos; Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Mourão,Rosa Helena Veras; Silva,Lenise Vargas Flores da.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the anesthetic effect of the essential oils (EOs) of Lippia alba (citral and linalool chemotypes, EOLA-C and EOLA-L respectively) and Lippia origanoides (chemotype carvacrol, EOLO-Ca) on tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) juveniles. The tested concentrations of the L. alba and L. origanoides EOs were: 25, 50, 100, and 200 μL/L. Time required to reach the stages of sedation, deep anesthesia, and recovery, as well as ventilatory frequency, were monitored for each EO concentration. The results indicated that all EO concentrations tested induced tambaqui anesthesia and that the ventilatory frequency was altered by the EOs. L. origanoides showed the shortest time to induce sedation and anesthesia, but had long...

Glyphosate on digestive enzymes activity in piava (Leporinus obtusidens) Ciência Rural
Salbego,Joseânia; Pretto,Alexandra; Silva,Vera Maria Machado da; Loro,Vania Lucia; Lazzari,Rafael; Gioda,Carolina Rosa; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The effects of glyphosate, a nonselective herbicide (1.0 or 5.0mg L-1) on digestive enzymes activity (stomach and intestine) were evaluated in juveniles of piava (Leporinus obtusidens) after 90 days of exposure. The activity of acid protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase increased with the increase of glyphosate concentration. These results indicate that glyphosate affects digestive enzyme activities in this species, and may be an indicator of poor nutrient availability when fish survive in herbicide-contaminated water.

Riffel,Ana Paula Konzen; Jardim,Sinara; Pires,Marcela Ciprandi; Bertagnolli,Bruna; Corrêa,Bruna Renata Silva; Ré,Francine Cenzi de; Zambra,Francis Maria Bao; Lubini,Greice; Garcia,Luciano Oliveira; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of this study was to investigate the preferred pH in silver catfish Rhamdia quelen acclimated to different pH. Fish were acclimated for one week at pH 4.2±0.1, 5.2±0.1, 6.3±0.1, 7.2±0.1, 8.0±0.1, and 9.0±0.1 and after this period, transferred to a polyethylene tube with a pH gradient from 3.5 to 10.0. The position of the fish in the pH gradient was observed 1, 6 and 12 hours after transference. Results indicated that acclimation to different pH did not change pH preference of silver catfish (pH 7.0-7.6), occurring only a transitory variation around 6 hours after transference. This pH preference coincides with the best pH indicated in the literature for growth of this species.

Densidade de estocagem e crescimento de alevinos de Jundiá Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) Ciência Rural
Piaia,Rosamari; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.

Dissolved oxygen and ammonia levels in water that affect plasma ionic content and gallbladder bile in silver catfish Ciência Rural
Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Kochhann,Daiani; Gonçalves,Jamile Fabbrin; Loro,Vania Lúcia; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
Ionic contents (Na+, K+ and Cl-) of plasma and gallbladder bile (GB) of juveniles silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (156.1±0.2g, 28.2±0.3cm), were determined in three different times (0, 6 and 24h) after exposure to: a) control or high dissolved oxygen (DO = 6.5mg L-1) + low NH3 (0.03mg L-1); b) low DO (3.5mg L-1) + low NH3; c) high DO + high NH3 (0.1mg L-1); and d) low DO + high NH3. High waterborne NH3 or low DO levels increased plasma and GB ion levels. These parameters might have followed different mechanisms to affect osmoregulation since a synergic effect of these variables was detected.

Piscicultura continental no Rio Grande do Sul: situação atual, problemas e perspectivas para o futuro Ciência Rural
Baldisserotto,Bernardo.

Na+ and K+ body levels and survival of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) exposed to acute changes of water pH. Ciência Rural
Zaions,Maria Ignez; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of water pH on survival and Na+ and K+ body levels of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen, a freshwater catfish. Survival was 100% at pH 4.00 to 9.0 throughout the experiment (96h), and death of all fingerlings was observed only at pH 3.75 or lower and at pH 10.50. There was a significant correlation between water pH and body Na+ levels (but not K+ levels) 72h after transfer. There was a clear reduction in Na+ levels when the transfer was to pH outside the 5.0 - 9.0 range, which is in agreement with the fact that fishes exposed to such pH’s present loss of ions by diffusion and/or a decrease in absorption. Growth experiments with this species probably would present best results within the 5.0 - 9.0 pH...

Anesthetic induction and recovery time of Centropomus parallelus exposed to the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla Ciência Rural
Parodi,Thaylise Vey; Santos,Celina Alcoforado dos; Veronez,Alexandra; Gomes,Levy de Carvalho; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the effectiveness of the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla (EOA) as an anesthetic and stress reducing agent in the transport of fat snook ( Centropomus parallelus ). Juveniles were exposed to different concentrations of EOA (seawater-adapted: 25-300μL L-1; freshwater-adapted: 200μL L-1) to identify the anesthetic induction and recovery times. In an additional experiment, seawater-adapted fat snook were transported in plastic bags with 10 or 20μL L-1 EOA for 6 or 24h. The increased concentration of EOA proportionally decreased the time required for anesthesia induction. Mortality was 30 and 70% in fat snook transported with 10 and 20µL L-1, respectively, 24h after transport. The addition of 20µL L-1 EOA significantly reduced...

Net ion fluxes and ammonia excretion during transport of Rhamdia quelen juveniles Ciência Rural
Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Barcellos,Leonardo José Gil; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective of this study was to verify net ion fluxes and ammonia excretion in silver catfish transported in plastic bags at three different loading densities: 221, 286 and 365g L-1 for 5h. A water sample was collected at the beginning and at the end of the transport for analysis of water parameters. There was a significant positive relationship between net ion effluxes and negative relationship between ammonia excretion and loading density, demonstrated by the following equations: Na+: y-24.5-0.27x, r2=0.99, Cl-: y=40.2-0.61x, r2=0.98, K+: y=8.0-27.6x, r2=0.94; ammonia excretion: y=-11.43+0.017x, r2=0.95, where y: net ion flux (mmol kg-1 h-1) or ammonia excretion (mg kg-1 h-1) and x: loading density (g). Therefore, the increase of loading density...

Waterborne ammonia and silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen: survival and growth Ciência Rural
Miron,Denise dos Santos; Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Loro,Vania Lúcia; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of waterborne un-ionized ammonia (NH3) on the survival and growth of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). Juveniles were exposed to 0.10, 0.22, and 0.42mg L-1 NH3 at pH 8.2 for 45 days. After 15 days, a significant mortality rate (33%) was observed in the fish exposed to 0.42mg L-1 NH3. After 20 days, 23% and 43% mortality (both significant) was observed in fish exposed to 0.22 and 0.42mg L-1 NH3, respectively. A significant negative relationship between survival, length, daily weight gain, standard growth rate, and biomass of juveniles of silver catfish per tank with waterborne NH3 levels was found at the end of the experiment. The resulting survival and waterborne NH3 relationship indicated that, to...

Growth of silver catfish ( Rhamdia quelen ) exposed to acidic pH at different humic acid levels Ciência Rural
Costa,Silvio Teixeira da; Sutili,Fernando Jonas; Gressler,Luciane Tourem; Loebens,Luíza; Colpo,Carine Vargas; Lazzari,Rafael; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: Humic substances are organic compounds that possess high molecular weight and are formed by the decomposition of plant materials. Humic substances comprise humic acids, fulvic acids and humin. Humic acids (HA) have shown to be able to provide some protection to biological membranes of fish in water with low pH, replacing the protective action of Ca2+. Thus, this studyaimed to observe growth of silver catfish ( Rhamdia quelen ) juveniles exposed to pHs 5.5 and 6.5 and to different levels of HA: 0, 10, 25 and 50mg L-1. Results showed that, irrespective of pH, HA was highly detrimental to silver catfish growth, since the higher the concentration of HA, the lower the weight gain and feed intake, resulting in lower biomass and lower specific growth...

ABSTRACT: The use of natural products, such as essential oils (EOs), is a potential novel approach to treat fish bacterial infections with a lower risk of developing resistance. There has been a number of studies reporting the activity of EOs as those obtained from the species Achyrocline satureioides, Aniba parviflora, Aniba rosaeodora, Anthemis nobilis, Conobea scoparioides, Cupressus sempervirens, Illicium verum, Lippia origanoides, and Melaleuca alternifolia against bacteria. However, there are few studies investigating the effect of these EOs against fish bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of EOs against the following fish bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, Citrobacter freundii, and Raoultella...
