ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLING LEAFY SPURGE WITH SHEEP AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Nudell, Daniel J.; Sell, Randall S.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.), a widely established exotic, noxious, perennial weed, is a major threat to rangeland and wildland in the Upper Great Plains. Chemical, biological, and cultural control methods have limitations in their applicability and effectiveness in treating leafy spurge. However, many of the constraints prohibiting the use of herbicides, tillage, and biological controls do not apply to sheep grazing. Sheep grazing, while known to be effective in controlling leafy spurge since the 1930s, has lacked widespread adoption as a leafy spurge control. A deterministic, bioeconomic model, incorporating relationships between sheep grazing and leafy spurge control, grass recovery, and forage use by cattle, was developed to evaluate the...

Economic Contribution of the Soybean Industry to the North Dakota Economy AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Olson, Frayne E.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The purpose of this study was to measure the economic contribution of the soybean industry to the North Dakota economy. Expenditures and returns from soybean production, grain handling, and transportation were estimated to calculate the direct economic impacts from soybean activities. Secondary economic impacts were estimated using the North Dakota Input- Output Model. Soybean production in North Dakota has trended upward over the past three decades. Increases in acreage were relatively modest in the 1980s, but by the mid 1990s acreage was beginning to rapidly expand. In 1990, North Dakota had about 500,000 acres of soybeans. By 2000, acreage had increased to 1.9 million acres. By 2009, soybean acreage in the state was approaching 4 million acres. Direct...

ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT IN WHEAT AND BARLEY: 1998-2000 AgEcon
Nganje, William E.; Johnson, D. Demcey; Wilson, William W.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Bangsund, Dean A.; Tiapo, Napoleon M..
Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, has been a severe problem for wheat and barley producers since 1993. This study provides an update of economic losses suffered by wheat and barley producers in scab-affected regions in the United States. Emphasis is placed on estimating direct and secondary economic impacts of yield and price losses suffered by wheat and barley producers from 1998 to 2000. Nine states are included in the analysis for three wheat classes. Three of the nine states were also used for the analysis of malting and feed barley. The cumulative direct economic losses from FHB in hard red spring (HRS) wheat, soft red winter (SRW) wheat, durum wheat, and barley is estimated at $870 million from 1998 through 2000. The combined...

CASINOS IN THE UPPER MIDWEST: A DISCUSSION OF THE IMPACTS AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The recent expansion and proliferation of legalized casino gaming has spurred debate at all levels of government. As a result, a number of studies have attempted to quantify many of the economic, social, and fiscal impacts of legalized casino gaming. This study reviewed existing literature on the effects of casino gaming in the Upper Midwest and discussed some of the issues associated with casino activities. The impacts of casino gaming have generally been evaluated at either the local and/or state or regional level. Positive economic impacts have been quantified more often than negative economic impacts. Few studies have attempted to quantify the social costs of casino gaming. The economic impacts of casino activities on local economies have generally...

PREDICTED FUTURE ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF LEAFY SPURGE IN THE UPPER MIDWEST; SUMMARY AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Leitch, Jay A..
The Leafy Spurge Biological Control program was designed to use insects and plant diseases from the plant's original European habitat to control infestations in the United States. The widespread adoption of biological agents to combat leafy spurge and the initial success in reclaiming previously infested land has prompted an evaluation of the potential future economic benefits of the biological control of leafy spurge in the Upper Midwest. Based on expert opinion and historical data, leafy spurge in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming was projected to infest 1.85 million acres, of which, 65 percent was estimated to controlled with biological agents by 2025. Based on a survey of county weed board personnel, North Dakota and Wyoming are...
