Measuring the impacts of distortions in the European Union cotton sector: a partial equilibrium analysis using the ATPSM model framework AgEcon
Gadanakis, Yiorgos; Baourakis, George; Clapan, Carmen.
The “cotton issue” has been a topic of several academic discussions for trade policy analysts. However the design of trade and agricultural policy in the EU and the USA has become a politically sensitive matter throughout the last five years. This study utilizing the Agricultural Trade Policy Simulation Model (ATPSM) aims to gain insights into the global cotton market, to explain why domestic support for cotton has become an issue, to quantify the impact of the new EU agricultural policy on the cotton sector, and to measure the effect of eliminating support policies on production and trade. Results indicate that full trade liberalization would lead the four West African countries to better terms of trade with the EU. If tariff reduction follows the...

This paper examines and analyzes the impacts of the reformed CAP as well as the decisions of the new round of negotiations for the olive oil and cotton sectors in the European Union. The aim of this study is to estimate the changes in supply (agricultural supply plus intermediate demand and final production), demand (consumption), price and stock formation (import, export, beginning and ending stocks, national price formation) for both the olive oil and cotton sectors. The model designed for this purpose is partial equilibrium and policy oriented. From Dayton to Brussels: A Presentation of the Balkan's Status Quo AgEcon
Baourakis, George; Lakatos, Csilla; Xepapadeas, Anastasios.
Associating the Balkans with "backwardness" is highly common in specialty literature. However, more recently - ten years after the Dayton Peace Agreement - a new paradigm is dominating discussions about the future of the Balkans: a possible EU membership for the countries of the region. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the current economic situation in the Balkans with emphasis on the EU's policy towards the region. The launch of the Stabilization and Association Process for the Western Balkans with its main instruments concerning trade liberalization and financial assistance reflects an obvious political will to reduce the "backlog" of the region. The accession of Bulgaria and Romania is a matter of "when" not a matter of "if". An...

Economic Implications of the EU Accession of Bulgaria and Romania: A CGE Approach AgEcon
Baourakis, George; Lakatos, Csilla; Xepapadeas, Anastasios.
The paper examines the economic implications of Bulgaria and Romania recent accession to the EU. The analysis has been carried out by using the GTAP model and database. In a first attempt, the effects of the removal of formal trade barriers and the adoption of common external tariffs are considered; not surprisingly, we find that associated impacts are not large, given that existing barriers have been gradually removed in accordance with the Europe Agreements. Further, we take into account the so-called "value of the current preferences", representing a scenario where there is a potential return to the MFN tariff schedule.

The Floriculture Market and its Relation to Consumer Behaviour: a Greek perspective AgEcon
Baourakis, George; Marko, M.; Tsakiridou, Efthimia; Tzimitra-Kalogianni, Irene.
The effect of characteristics of pig enterprise and its owner, along with management applied in farms on regional pig meat productivity of commercial pig units in Greece was examined. The results showed that most of the enterprises were family operated, belonging to a sole owner of old age and low educational level, whose children were not involved or plan to get involved with the enterprise. The analysis of a generalised linear model showed that only the "Age of farm's equipment" and "Size class of sow herd" were significant in explaining the variation of pig meat productivity.
