Insights into the genetic diversity of the leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx), inferred from mitochondrial DNA analysis, at Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula Boletín de Investigaciones
Hernández-Ardila,Laura Valentina; Barragán-Barrera,Dalia C.; Negrete,Javier; Poljak,Sebastián; Riet-Sapriza,Federico G.; Caballero,Susana.
ABSTRACT The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is a genetically low-studied species. In order to conduct the first genetic diversity assessment of this species in Danco Coast (Antarctic Peninsula), 423 bp of the mitochondrial DNA Control Region (mtDNA-CR) was sequenced from 13 blood samples collected in Primavera Base (62º15’S, 58º39’W) during the 2011-2012 austral summer. Our results showed high haplotype diversity (h = 0.99), with various divergent haplotypes. Our findings suggest that leopard seals in the Danco Coast could represent different phylogroups; however, including more genetic markers are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Study of the Lange Glacier and its impact due to temperature increase in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica Boletín de Investigaciones
Mojica-Moncada,Diego F.; Cárdenas,Carlos; Mojica-Moncada,Jhon F.; Brondi,Fabian; Barragán-Barrera,Dalia C.; Marangunic,Cedomir; Holland,David; Franco Herrera,Andrés; Casassa,Gino.
ABSTRACT In the western Antarctic Peninsula one of the areas the highest warming in the southern hemisphere has been identified. To characterize this tendency, we selected the Lange Glacier (LG) on King George Island, to evaluate: 1) LG surface temperature and dynamics using stakes with temperature data loggers; 2) LG submerged thickness and sea parameters through bathymetry (BT) and 29 CTD stations in front of LG; 3) glacier front (GF) using BT and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM); 4) change in GF position using DEM and historical data of GF width; 5) Calving flux (QC). Our findings showed 85 % of temperatures were above the 0 °C melting point (mean = 5.0 ± 5.2 °C). The stakes had an average ice loss of 9.3 ± 1.3 cm. The LG mean dynamics was 8.8 ± 1.5 m...

First record of a Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) in the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Botero-Acosta,Natalia; Bohrer do Amaral,Karina; Barragán-Barrera,Dalia C.; Farías-Curtidor,Nohelia; Moreno-Sotomayor,Jorge H.; Macías-Campo,Heidys M.; Álzate-Montoya,Alejandro; Barrientos-Muñoz,Karla G..
ABSTRACT Between January 23rd and 27th, 2020, a Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was seen in coastal waters of the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park. This is the first known record of a live animal for the Colombian Caribbean Sea. While it was not possible to establish causality relationships, the present note includes a description of the environmental and oceanographic context associated with sightings. While the Colombian Caribbean, because of its oligotrophy, would not permanently sustain a constant presence of the great baleen whales, its inclusion as part of the potential distribution range for Fin whales is suggested. The current report also highlights the importance and relevance of citizen science, in addition to...
