Contrary to widely held belief, we show that the source of regression error does not matter when calculating Marshallian surplus. A misspecified demand curve, not the assumed source of regression error, leads to differences in estimates of consumer surplus.

Gorman's theory of demand is extended comprehensively to incomplete systems. The incomplete systems approach dramatically increases this class of models. The separate roles of symmetry and adding up are identified in the rank and the functional form of this class of models. We show that symmetry determines rank and the maximum rank is three. We show that adding up and 0o homogeneity determines the functional form and there is no functional form restriction for an incomplete system. We prove that every full rank system and reduced rank systems with a minimal level of degeneracy can be written as a polynomial in a single function of income. Unit Values

This paper investigates the scope of the unit value problem in household level expenditure survey data. I test whether self-reported prices vary with covariates thought to be important in household demand behavior. The paper then measures expenditure elasticity of quality for 196 different food aggregates. Approximately half of the expenditure elasticities estimated are significantly different from zero. Finally, a generalization of the standard quality demand regression is proposed, in which the expenditure elasticity of quality is allowed to vary over the range of total food expenditure. Some food aggregates display significant nonlinearities.

A great deal of research on farm and food policy and consumer choice focuses on the link between food consumption and nutrition. This paper presents and applies a new method to analyze the demand for food and nutrients, and consumer welfare. The foundation for this method is the recent extension of the Gorman class of exactly aggregable demand models to incomplete demand systems. The purposes of this approach are to derive and implement coherent, flexible empirical models of food and nutrient demand, to estimate the model parameters consistently with aggregate data, and to make inferences on the impacts of farm and food policy changes on food and nutrient demand and consumer welfare of those policies. Zeroes expenditure represent a difficulty in the analysis of household survey data. Zero expenditures are the result of two phenomena: nonconsumption and infrequency of purchase. Distinguishing between these types of zeroes is difficult in the kinds of data of interest to agricultural economists. This paper proposes a novel approach that yields less biased estimates of latent expenditure when the cause of the zeroes is unknown.

This paper explores a puzzling empirical regularity: households pay less for foods as the time since receipt of their last paycheck increases. I leverage randomization with regard to paycheck timing to causally identify the effect of time since paycheck receipt on prices. Estimates of the decline in prices range between 5% and 6% percent, over the course of a month. I investigate several potential explanations for this behavior, including credit constraints and stockpiling. I find evidence that the effect is driven by low-income households and exacerbated by stockpiling behavior.

Food Secure In 30 Minutes or Less: The Relationship Between Time Use and Food Security

This paper examines the relationship between household food security status, SNAP participation, and time used in food preparation and acquisition. Using the American Time Use Survey linked with the Current Population Survey's Food Security Supplement, we find that food insecurity and SNAP participation are positive predictors of number of minutes single adult households use in food preparation. Meanwhile, SNAP participation is a negative predictor of food acquisition. Although these results do not imply a causal relationship, they do reveal reflect that food insecure households and households that participate in the SNAP program use time differently than food secure and non-participating households.
